Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to investigate the ongoing significance of industrial craft in deindustrialising places such as Australia. Providing an alternative to the nostalgic trope of the redundant factory 'craftsman', this book introduces the intriguing and little-known trade of engineering patternmaking, where objects are brought to life through the handmade 'originals' required for mass production. Drawing on oral histories collected by the author, this book highlights the experiences of industrial craftspeople in Australian manufacturing, as they navigate precarious employment, retraining, gendered career pathways, creative expression and technological change. The book argues that digital fabrication technologies may modify or transform industrial craft, but should not obliterate it. Industrial craft is about more than the rudimentary production of everyday objects: it is about human creativity, material knowledge and meaningful work, and it will be key to human survival in the troubled times ahead. Jesse Adams Stein is an interdisciplinary design researcher and oral historian. She is a Senior Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow at the School of Design, University of Technology Sydney, Australia.

Download or read book Defuturing written by Tony Fry and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Once one understands the nature and magnitude of defuturing as the negation of world futures, how one has to account for the history and making of the material world – including design - dramatically changes. Defuturing as our condition forces the generation of a new philosophy of design.” With these thoughts this book presents a radically new understanding of the history, context and futures of designing. First published in 1999, now reissued with a new preface by the author, Defuturing: A New Design Philosophy is a prescient and powerful account of what it means to comprehend that we live in world that is taking away futures for ourselves and non-human others. Arguing that designing is doubly implicated in this process, first in its roles in helping to create the unsustainable, but second, re-thought through the lens of defuturing, as a mode of acting in the world that can help contest the negation of the world, Defuturing transforms our comprehension of designing and of how futures can be constituted. Working not through abstract theorizing but through the analysis of concrete examples, the book uses historical material on design to expose the archaeology of defuturing. Shattering the illusion that the future simply “is”, Defuturing confronts designing with the challenge of remaking while offering the elements of a new practical reasoning of design acting.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays sheds light on repair as a disposition to material culture and a practice rooted in diverse sociocultural experiences. It provides an in-depth exploration of how repair manifests itself through the different lenses of governance, grassroots activism, transformative design and community-led initiatives. Most importantly, the chapters demonstrate how place-based approaches can reveal blueprints for social impact in circumstances of growing environmental and social precariousness.
Book Synopsis Education Policy and the Australian Education Union by : Andrew Vandenberg
Download or read book Education Policy and the Australian Education Union written by Andrew Vandenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the politics of teacher resistance to the formation and implementation of neoliberal education policies in Australia. It argues that policies such as publishing examination test results online amounts to auditing teachers’ work, and assumes incompetence from teachers, which ultimately results in diverting teachers from their true professional responsibilities. The book outlines the rise of transnational networks that promote market-oriented methods of achieving social objectives, such as good education for all students, and considers a range of explanations for why this education policy was strengthened in Australia in 2010. It also reviews a range of arguments about professional unionism, and reflects on the history of the Australian Education Union and its capacity to resist social neoliberalism. The book concludes by reporting on a case-study in which principals, teachers and parents at two ordinary schools in Australia have managed to keep market forces at bay. It will appeal to students and researchers in the fields of education and sociology, particularly those interested in education policy, political ideology, unionism, and schools.
Book Synopsis Labour Management by : Dewan & Sudarshan
Download or read book Labour Management written by Dewan & Sudarshan and published by Discovery Publishing House. This book was released on 1996 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a somewhat bewildering fact that, while citizens and employees generally recognize the importance of studying labour-management relations, many managers do not. Instead, managers often asset that they are too busy with other business problems to think about labour relations. But this is simply foolishness, for a major part of any managers job involves supervision of other people, and the firm s employees as a group are often the largest single cost factor in its operations. The work of this book series is the collaborative effort of many outstanding people in the management field. The motivation for this book varied from individual to individual, but the central motivation that united us all was the excitement of capturing the management state-of-the-art and sharing it with colleagues in the dynamic profession of management. Contents: The Significance of Labour Management Relations, Worker Participation, The Work Situation: Incidence of Strikes, Role of Trade Unions in Society, The Impact of Labour Relations, Industrial Relations and Mobility of Labour, The Future of Labour Management Relations.
