If I had to be tried again, I would not mind taking a change of venue to Portland (applause); although I think I can get along where I am without much difficulty. The subject for tonight's talk was not chosen by me but was chosen for me. I don't know who chose it, nor just what they expected me to say, but there is not much in a name, and I suppose what I say tonight would be just about the same under any title that anybody saw fit to give. I am told that I am going to talk about "Industrial Conspiracies." I ought to know something about them. And I won't tell you all I know tonight, but I will tell you some things that I know tonight. The conspiracy laws, you know, are very old. As one prominent laboring man said on the witness stand down in Los Angeles a few weeks ago when they asked him if he was not under indictment and what for, he said he was under indictment for the charge they always made against working men when they hadn't done anything-conspiracy. And that is the charge they always make. It is the one they have always made against everybody when they wanted them, and particularly against working men, because they want them oftener than they do anybody else.

The identity of this central point may easily be inferred when he states that the basic industries of our country are steel, coal and railroads, and says that of these steel is the undisputed leader. It was common knowledge, he says, and it was commonly expected that when the war ended and there was no longer a national de mand for production for war needs, the industrial monarchs would turn on labor in a great effort to smash their way back to autocratic domi nation. After developing his antecedent con ditions up to this point, Mr. Gompers under takes to make his readers believe that with all the industrial and commercial employers of the country banded together in the conspiracy to destroy the trade-union movement, the leaders in these three basic industries - steel, coal and railroads - deliberately brought about the strikes for the purp ose of making the conspiracy successful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Conspiracy in Its Relation to Labor Organizations Union men under the law of equal rights and equal opportunity, have a liberty of contracting as they please, working when they please and quitting when they please, but these same rights belong to non-union men and all employers of labor. The law recognizes no combinations of either men or manufacturers, made for the purpose of injuring, threatening or intimidating others. Before entering upon a discussion of the law, it may be well to make a brief statement of the industrial trouble that existed in our own state the past year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conspiracy There are some queer fish in New York, queer human fish that swim and wriggle in the great pool of life that spreads from shore to shore of Manhattan. They come seldom to the surface, and When they do it is only to blink and dive beneath again to seek their own familiar haunts. They are a school by themselves, these queer fish; book-worms, savants, inventors, philosophers, SO buried in their own thoughts and pursuits that they neither know nor see how time and progress gradually change them, at least in outward appearance, into veritable specimens for museums. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When It Was Dark: The Story of a Great Conspiracy The clerk, a small, rotund man, clerical in aspect, and wearing a round t'elt hat, pulled out a large old-fashioned watch. Time for the bell, William, he said. The parish church was a large building in sham Perpendicular. It stood in a very central position in the Manchester main road, rising amid a bare triangle of flat gravestones, and only separated from the street pavement by high iron railings. It was about half-past four on a dull autumn afternoon. The trams swung ringing down the black, muddy road, and the long procession of great two-wheeled carts, painted vermilion, carried coal from the collieries six miles away to the great mills and factories of Salford.
