Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inductive Grammar of the English Language: For the Use of Common and Graded Schools III. Clear the work, as far as practicable, of any admixt ure of the other sciences. Grammar is grammar. Rhetoric has its own sphere; so, also, has logic. All attempts to consider the three together will end in confusion. No two sciences can be successfully taught from one text -book. In the present work the principles of rhetoric and logic will not be discussed, ex cept in so far as those principles lie distinctly within the sphere of Grammar. Having said thus much, by way of preface, as to the gen eral scope of the work here presented to the public, I leave the merits of the book to the discrimination of those to whom it is more particularly addressed. I sincerely trust that the teachers of our country may find the work to be, in some measure at least, the realization of the author's hope and purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inductive Studies in English Grammar In recent years the conviction has frequently and emphatically been expressed that the grammar school course ought to be both shortened and enriched; that much now in the course might be taken out, not only without loss, but with positive gain, and that much might be brought in which would make it a far more adequate preparation for the high school. Many, including the authors of this book, believe that, while many pupils in our grammar schools will never be able to enter the high school, yet the principles of a true democracy demand that all should be so taught as to render it easy for them to advance in knowledge, if the way should be opened. In all high schools of good grade some foreign language is studied immediately upon entrance, and to many pupils it presents unusual difficulties. It is not too much to say that more than one half of the total number of failures in Latin in our high schools are due, not to any lack of capacity on the part of the pupil, or to any inherent difficulty in the language itself, but to a lack of practical mastery of English grammar. This little book is a modest attempt to secure better preparation for the language work of the high school by a scientific and thought-inspiring method of presenting English grammar, by a reduction of the number of facts presented, to the few actually essential, by increased emphasis on certain matters often neglected but essential to any real mastery of the subject, and by adapting the terminology and method of presentation more closely to that used in German and Latin grammars. These "Inductive Studies" were printed three years ago, and bound for ready reference with the "Inductive Latin Primer" of the same authors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Inductive Grammar of the English Language: Founded Entirely on the Principle of Relations The Object of arranging the words in columns, in the Black-board exercises, is to analyze the sentence before the student commences to parse it; for the mere act of placing the words in this position is the simplest plan of analysis, especially for children, that could be given; and gives the student a better opportunity of exercising his judgment in uniting the words again, according to their synthetic relation. Analysis is placing the words in a column. 0 Synthesis is the reduplication of these words. The student will be guided in doubling these words by the natural relation which they hold to each other; for each word in a sentence has some other word or words with which it naturally unites itself, independent of arbitrary rules or laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English Grammar, in Familiar Conversations, Inductive and Progressive: Uniting and Harmonizing Theory and Practice, and Adapted to Oral Teaching This book contains no visionary theory. It is the result of much experience and observation in the school-room; where we have found that even English Grammar, dry and tedious as it is considered, can be rendered pleasing and attractive, if we teach it orally. In this manner it is successfully taught in many of our best schools. No other method of instruction is so well adapted to the capacity of children. After carefully comparing several different methods, and giving each of them a thorough trial, I have prepared an easy, practical system of oral teaching, for the use of schools and private students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Grammar: An Introduction to the Study of the Laws of Language, by the Inductive Method Tms book is the outcome of an attempt to find a statement of grammar principles which should avoid the placing of the teacher of foreign languages at cross purposes with the teacher of English, to the end that one instructor may not labo riously unteach what the other has as laboriously taught. The authors, originally agreeing only upon the necessity of agree ment, have proceeded upon the conviction that in the essential sameness of thought processes among different peoples the broader principles of language structure must be general. They believe themselves to have found their problem not im possible of solution and the attempt not altogether profitless. 'part II deals with the parts of speech in detail. The inductive and laboratory methods are employed. The order of development usually followed is, to begin with an apt and familiar example that produces a definite image or concept, with the accompanying comment or generaliza tion reduced to the simplest and -most direct terms; then to follow the development, while it is still fresh, with exercises for the application of the rule or principle involved, so that the pupil may learn by the natural process of doing. Care has been taken, that, as far as possible, illustrative and exercise matter shall be pleasing and inspiring, concrete rather than abstract, 'and of a practical nature. Formal exercises in Classification are employed only so far as they are deemed essential to the understanding of important laws and principles. At the end of each chapter are exercises in review of. Book excerpt: Following up Robert Traina's classic Methodical Bible Study, this book introduces the practice of inductive Bible study to a new generation of students, pastors, and church leaders. The authors, two seasoned educators with over sixty combined years of experience in the classroom, offer guidance on adopting an inductive posture and provide step-by-step instructions on how to do inductive Bible study. They engage in conversation with current hermeneutical issues, setting forth well-grounded principles and processes for biblical interpretation and appropriation. The process they present incorporates various methods of biblical study to help readers hear the message of the Bible on its own terms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Systematic Course of Exercises and Questions in English Grammar: For Use in Public Schools, High Schools and Collegiate Institutes It is the hope of the present writer that within a few years Grammar will be felt to be a great help in the study of our language and literature and at the same time as useful an educator of the more solid faculties of the mind as any other subject. Meanwhile we should feel deeply the debt of gratitude we owe to recent writers who have done so much to cut loose from the methods of the synthetic grammars and to make this great study less ludicrous than formerly. It is impossible to treat English Grammar inductively in the full sense of the word, especially in chapters on the parts of speech; but no doubt the 'day is not im measurably distant when that worn out classification will be forgotten and words will be classified according to their place in the English sentence. The following tests have been kept constantly in View to prevent useless questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete English Grammar It is to be regretted that too often pupils lose the real benefit of their studies by the perverted use they make of them. To them a rule is a disagreeable necessity, not a valuable aid in their work. This book 'aims to show that the purpose of rules in grammar is solely to make plain and clear the principles of the language. In order to accomplish this end, every step is thoroughly explained and illustrated before any rule is given. The pupil is not allowed to have a definition, a rule, or a formula until he actually feels the need of it until he has thoroughly mastered the thought underlying the words, and is able to appreciate the fact that it is, after all, what oft was thought, but ne'er so well expressed. It thus becomes to him a privilege rather than a burden. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
