Book excerpt: In a computational tour-de-force, this volume wipes away a host of problems related to location discovery in wireless ad-hoc sensor networks. WASNs have recognized potential in many applications that are location-dependent, yet are heavily constrained by factors such as cost and energy consumption. Their “ad-hoc” nature, with direct rather than mediated connections between a network of wireless devices, adds another layer of difficulty. Basing this work entirely on data-driven, coordinated algorithms, the author’s aim is to present location discovery techniques that are highly accurate—and which fit user criteria. The research deploys nonparametric statistical methods and relies on the concept of joint probability to construct error (including location error) models and environmental field models. It also addresses system issues such as the broadcast and scheduling of the beacon. Reporting an impressive accuracy gain of almost 17 percent, and organized in a clear, sequential manner, this book represents a stride forward in wireless localization.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Ad-Hoc, Mobile, and Wireless Networks, ADHOC-NOW 2008, held in Sophia-Antipolis, France, September 2008. The 40 revised full papers and the 15 poster presentations were carefully reviewed and selected from 110 submissions. The papers deal with advances in Ad-Hoc networks, i.e. wireless, self-organizing systems formed by co-operating nodes within communication range of each other that form temporary networks. Their topology is dynamic, decentralized, ever changing and the nodes may move around arbitrarily.

It works mainly with fingerprints features and inertial movements information. The former tackles the RSSIs values between sensors while the latter deals with the objets movement attitude by using accelerometer and gyroscope. The combination of both information is performed in terms of interval analysis, or Kalman filtering. The proposed work introduces three orders mobility models to approximate nodes trajectories using accelerations, combined then to the weighted K nearest neighbors algorithm in a centralized scheme. Then the mobility models are extended up to the inertial information taking into consideration the rotations of the nodes. A decentralized localization method is also proposed in the following in view of the working mechanism of large scale sensor networks. Finally, this thesis proposes a zoning localization method aiming at determining the zones in which the nodes reside. The proposed method addresses the zoning problem by using both the belief functions theory and the interval analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We refer to localization as the problem of estimating the spatial coordinates of wireless nodes in an ad-hoc network. Wireless sensor network is an example of such a network, where localization as a problem has been a challenging topic for several years. The position of sensor nodes can be either manually configured before deployment or a GPS receiver can be built into each of these nodes. The former approach is very tedious and error-prone while the latter is a costly proposition in terms of volume, money and power consumption. In this thesis, we consider the problem of determining the positions of wireless nodes using range measurements from multiple, sparsely located, beacon stations with known locations. Clusters of unknown nodes collaborate among themselves in estimating their positions with the help of beacon stations. The major problem is overcoming range measurement inaccuracies. We propose a simple position estimation algorithm that features robustness with respect to range measurement inaccuracies, has low complexity and distributed implementation using only local information. We analyze the performance of the algorithm based on rigorous simulation and theory. We then extend the simple algorithm to a probabilistic algorithm that overcomes some of the drawbacks present in the simple algorithm. The algorithm was designed and implemented in a wireless test-bed consisting of IEEE 802.11 based iPAQs to study its performance. Most of the current localization systems are based on multiple beacons assisting unknown nodes. In an attempt to eliminate some of the drawbacks present in such systems, we also propose and study a single mobile beacon based localization method where a mobile beacon assists unknown nodes in estimating their positions. An implementation of this method in a wireless testbed was used to evaluate the performance.

Localization is an important process in deploying ad-hoc wireless sensor networks. Several localization algorithms have been developed. However, they do not achieve satisfactory performance on irregularly-shaped networks. In this thesis, I present a localization algorithm based on an idea of growing local maps. The simulation results show that this algorithm achieves better performance for well-connected but irregularly-shaped networks or networks with obstacles blocking connections between a node and some other nodes within its radio range. Compared with the popular localization algorithm APS [1], the map-growing algorithm is more accurate for C-shaped grid or hexagon networks with acceptable coverage (>%75) when the range error is less than or equal to 5% R, where R is the radio range.

Book excerpt: With the proliferation of wireless sensor networks, providing location-aware technology and services to new applications have become important for developers. Localization is the problem of determining the positions of nodes in an ad hoc network. With the constrained resources of network sensors, providing robust localization services remains a fundamental research challenge facing the entire sensor network development community. The initial localization problem that we addressed was to design and develop a working system that could locate equipment, such as a laptop or video projector. Ferret, the localization system developed, uses two different ranging techniques to help locate an object to within one meter. Our next goal was to identify the locations of all nodes in a sensor network given the locations of a small subset of nodes. The system we developed, LESS or Localization using Evolution Strategies in Sensomets, provides substantial energy savings over existing techniques while providing comparable accuracy. We then introduce an efficient location discovery algorithm that bounds the localization error. Our algorithm, based on finding the smallest circle enclosing the intersection of n disks, runs in O(n ) time. We extend our work to the problem of finding the smallest disk that includes the set of points common to n disks and excluded from the interiors of m other disks. Many localization techniques say that a node can either be localized or it cannot. We present a location discovery algorithm that provides, for every node in the network, a position estimate, as well as an associated error bound and confidence level. We provide a versatile framework that allows users to perform localization queries based on the required accuracy and certainty. Ensuring coverage of a wireless sensor network is critical in many applications. Most schemes that analyze and implement coverage assume that sensor locations are known. For large sensor networks, errors occur when estimating node positions. Based on the errors that arise from the localization process, we present coverage algorithms that associate a confidence level with the coverage. We introduce a system that handles user coverage queries based on the coverage and certainty a situation requires.
