Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Un) Civil Society and Political Change in Indonesia provides critical analysis of Indonesia’s civil society and its impact on the country’s democratization efforts that does not only take the classical, pro-democratic actors of civil society into account but also portrays uncivil groups and their growing influence on political processes. Beittinger-Lee offers a revised categorization of civil society, including a model to define the sphere of ‘uncivil society’ more closely and to identify several subcategories of uncivil society. This is the first book to portrays various uncivil groups in Indonesia, ranging from vigilantes, militias, paramilitaries, youth groups, civil security task forces and militant Islamic (and other religious) groups, ethnonationalist groups to terrorist organizations and groups belonging to organized crime. Moreover, it provides the reader with an overview of Indonesia’s history, its political developments after the democratic opening, main improvements under the various presidents since Suharto’s fall, constitutional amendments and key reforms in human rights legislation. This book will be of interest to upper level undergraduates, postgraduates and academics in political science and Southeast Asian studies.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of the international community in the handover of the Dutch colony of West Papua/Irian Jaya to Indonesia in the 1960s and questions whether or not the West Papuan people ever genuinely exercised the right to self-determination guaranteed to them in the UN-brokered Dutch/Indonesian agreement of 1962. Indonesian, Dutch, US, Soviet, Australian and British involvement is discussed, but particular emphasis is given to the central part played by the United Nations in the implementation of this agreement. As guarantor, the UN temporarily took over the territory's administration from the Dutch before transferring control to Indonesia in 1963. After five years of Indonesian rule, a UN team returned to West Papua to monitor and endorse a controversial act of self-determination that resulted in a unanimous vote by 1022 Papuan 'representatives' to reject independence. Despite this, the issue is still very much alive today as a crisis-hit Indonesia faces continued armed rebellion and growing calls for freedom in West Papua.

Book excerpt: This report revisits the theoretical concepts of inequalities including their measurements, analyzes their global trends, presents the policy makers' perception of inequalities in 15 countries and identifies various policy options in combating this major development challenge of our time. The report makes the basic point that in spite of the impressive progress humanity has made on many fronts over the decades, it still remains deeply divided. In that context, it is intended to help development actors, citizens, and policy makers contribute to global dialogues and initiate conversations in their own countries about the drivers and extent of inequalities, their impact, and the ways in which they can be curbed.

Book Synopsis Joint evaluation of collaboration among the United Nations Rome-Based Agencies by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Joint evaluation of collaboration among the United Nations Rome-Based Agencies written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN Rome-based agencies (RBAs) – FAO, IFAD and WFP – collaborate in many forms, from joint advocacy, policy and technical work to joint projects. This is the first independent evaluation of collaboration among the RBAs. It has been jointly undertaken by the evaluation offices of FAO, IFAD and WFP. The evaluation’s primary objective was to assess whether and to what extent RBA collaboration is contributing to the achievement of the 2030 agenda, particularly at country level. The evaluation found that collaboration among the RBAs is a daily reality, reflecting the shared strengths and commitment of these distinctly different organizations. Although competition for resources continues in some contexts, there is widespread recognition of complementarity. In some cases, the current collaborative management processes are not the best way to stimulate joint work, with some types of collaboration imposing higher transaction costs. The operating context for the RBAs is dynamic, with significant potential, and where realism and pragmatism are key to meaningful and effective collaboration. Presently, efforts to promote RBA collaboration are not fully grounded in an accurate understanding of the conditions in which it is most effectively pursued and the formal statements of corporate commitment to collaboration reflect this. The report makes six recommendations, of which five are addressed to management of the three agencies and one of which targets the member states. Recommendation 1. Update the MOU among the RBAs. Although the current five-year MOU was only signed three years ago, significant changes since then make an update necessary. Recommendation 2. Restructure and reinforce the coordination architecture for RBAC within the framework of UNDS reform to ensure that at all levels, the coordination and evaluation of RBAC includes more proactive efforts to develop and disseminate lessons and knowledge about how to optimize collaboration among and beyond the RBAs, about the costs and benefits of RBAC, and about technical experience that can be usefully shared. Recommendation 3. Further embrace the new joint programming mechanisms at the country level and ensure constructive, collaborative RBA engagement with these mechanisms. Recommendation 4. Focus administrative collaboration efforts on further embracing the United Nations efficiency agenda. Recommendation 5. In considering the development of joint projects and programmes, assess the costs and benefits of the proposed collaboration and only proceed if the benefits outweigh the costs. Recommendation 6. The Member States of the RBA Governing Bodies should reappraise and adequately resource their position on RBA collaboration.
Book Synopsis Indonesia Economic and Technical Assistance Strategy Handbook Volume 1 Strategic Information and Regulations by : IBP USA
Download or read book Indonesia Economic and Technical Assistance Strategy Handbook Volume 1 Strategic Information and Regulations written by IBP USA and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a parent, you want your children to grow up to become self-motivated, financially savvy, contributing members of society who maintain a deeply satisfying adult life. This is why it is essential to “bratproof” your children against turning into spoiled, egotistical materialists who feel entitled to misbehave and take their lives for granted. This book will help you raise emotionally healthy kids who will grow to become mature, well-rounded adults. Protect your children from the potentially negative influences of a life of privilege and blinding effects of America’s abject consumerism by instilling these seven positive character traits: • High self-esteem • Joy and optimism • Serenity • Hard work and thrift • Loving kindness • Forgiveness • Integrity These will help give your children a sense of purpose while providing direction and clarity to their lives. Instead of seeking guidance through wealth or a misplaced notion of superiority, your children will develop a strong “work ethic” centered on selflessness, sacrifice, and ambition. This book offers simple, practical strategies you can integrate into daily parenting to help you effectively raise your child. A vital precept of this work is how to instill an obligation of financial responsibility in your son or daughter, and protecting your wealth from being decimated because they are unprepared for the financial realities of life. The book’s clear-cut analysis of the fundamentals of wealth transfer, discussion of the use of trusts, and detailed instruction regarding how to build a lasting legacy through charitable donations prepares you to discuss these complex topics with your advisors as well as your inheritors.
Book Synopsis Post-Tsunami Reconstruction in Indonesia by : Marjaana Jauhola
Download or read book Post-Tsunami Reconstruction in Indonesia written by Marjaana Jauhola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical analysis of gender mainstreaming initiatives in the post-tsunami context in Indonesia. Aiming to challenge the terms of the debate in gender mainstreaming and disaster reconstruction efforts, Jauhola offers an important contribution for the discussion of what ‘feminisms and disasters’ could be. The work provides an in-depth analysis of three governmental practices of gender mainstreaming: the use of the concept pair sex/gender; the use of gender analysis and the use of project management tools and local subversion that challenges the potential normative violence of gender mainstreaming. Providing feminist intersectional reading of gender mainstreaming the book aims to illustrate that this framework does not lack political alternatives, but rather, it offers an alternative focus for feminism and for the re-conceptualisation of ‘political’, and provides tools for practitioners of aid aiming to come to grips with the complexity of gender equality policy agenda and its potential violent social consequences in global politics. Drawing on extensive field research in Aceh, this text is one of the first book length studies, and thus provides a significant addition to Indonesian literatures on intersectional analysis of gender, religion, heteronormativity, and feminist subversive practice. It is a vital resource for those interested in understanding global interconnections of localised disaster and conflict reconstruction.
