These difficulties, if left unresolved, can become worse over time as children get further behind in mathematics, increasing the gap of understanding in these young children. The first tier of prevention in the RTI model is high-quality instruction within in the classroom. This project attempted to find one potential solution for students by providing a supplemental curriculum to Everyday Mathematics that allows a teacher to provide additional mathematics instruction and practice through games and activities. This project additionally suggests a workshop model to deliver this supplemental math curriculum, in order to include opportunities for additional small group and individual instruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from national and international assessments indicate that school children in the United States are not learning mathematics well enough. Many students cannot correctly apply computational algorithms to solve problems. Their understanding and use of decimals and fractions are especially weak. Indeed, helping all children succeed in mathematics is an imperative national goal. However, for our youth to succeed, we need to change how we're teaching this discipline. Helping Children Learn Mathematics provides comprehensive and reliable information that will guide efforts to improve school mathematics from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The authors explain the five strands of mathematical proficiency and discuss the major changes that need to be made in mathematics instruction, instructional materials, assessments, teacher education, and the broader educational system and answers some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to mathematics instruction. The book concludes by providing recommended actions for parents and caregivers, teachers, administrators, and policy makers, stressing the importance that everyone work together to ensure a mathematically literate society.

Book excerpt: This paper explored the question of "How to teach first graders math". There were three parts to this research: a literature review, interviews, and classroom observations. The literature review covered cognitive development theorists, instructional methods and the theories behind them, and current trends in mathematics education. Six teachers were interviewed and four classrooms were observed. Interviews were conducted to discover how first grade teahcers are currently teaching math and the methodology behind their instruction. The results of this study showed that the most important aspects of classroom experiences that promote a child's learning of mathematics are understanding the individual child's developmental level; communication between teachers, parents and students; hands-on learning experiences for the children; and an environment that encourages critical thinking.

Book excerpt: The book lets teachers identify where their students are in terms of number skills, and sets out a strategy for developing their knowledge. The authors show how to advance children′s learning across five stages of early arithmetical learning - emergent, perceptual, figurative, initial number, and facile number. This provides for increasingly sophisticated number strategies across addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as developing children′s number word and numeral knowledge, and their ability to structure number and have grouping strategies. The approach used nine guiding principles for teaching. Each chapter has clearly defined teaching procedures which show how to take the children onto the next more sophisticated stage. The teaching procedures are organized into key teaching topics, and each includes: a clearly defined purpose detailed instructions, activities, learning tasks and reinforcing games lists of responses which children may make application in whole class, small group and individualised settings a link to the Learning Framework in Number (see Early Numeracy- second edition, 2005) how the guiding principles for teaching can be used to allow teachers to evaluate and reflect upon their practice Primary practitioners in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada have tested the teaching procedures which can be used in conjunction with each country′s numeracy strategy. Primary teachers, especially of the early years, mathematics co-ordinators, heads of school, mathematics advisers, special educationalists, learning support personnel, teacher assistants, lecturers in initial teacher training and educational psychologists will all find this book invaluable.
