The first tier of prevention in the RTI model is high-quality instruction within in the classroom. This project attempted to find one potential solution for students by providing a supplemental curriculum to Everyday Mathematics that allows a teacher to provide additional mathematics instruction and practice through games and activities. This project additionally suggests a workshop model to deliver this supplemental math curriculum, in order to include opportunities for additional small group and individual instruction.

Interviews were conducted to discover how first grade teahcers are currently teaching math and the methodology behind their instruction. The results of this study showed that the most important aspects of classroom experiences that promote a child's learning of mathematics are understanding the individual child's developmental level; communication between teachers, parents and students; hands-on learning experiences for the children; and an environment that encourages critical thinking.
