Book excerpt: Individualism is a school of philosophy that has always held a particular appeal to artists and writers due to its situation of the individual at the core of its beliefs. To artists, the issue of autonomy has always been of the utmost importance because through it, they establish themselves as objective chroniclers and critics of society. This connection between individualism and the artist led Oscar Wilde to state in The Soul of Man under Socialism (1891) that 'Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known. I am inclined to say that it is the only real mode of individualism that the world has known' (142). With this idea in mind, it is worth reconsidering the English artist and writer Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) because prevalent throughout all of his work is a concern for the artist and the issue of maintaining one's autonomy. For Lewis, individualism is a philosophy that encourages uniqueness, and so throughout Lewis's work one can see an evolving personal philosophy, a bringing together of elements from numerous schools of thought, so as to create a personalised philosophy. This thesis charts the evolution of Lewis's individualism, which begins with his strong endorsement of the individual in the avant-garde magazine Blast and an opposition to French philosopher Henri Bergson's time philosophy, which then develops throughout his fictional works "Enemy of the Stars," "The Crowd Master", and ends with his first novel Tarr. It engages but eventually defines itself against German philosopher Max Stirner's philosophy of Egoism and is a philosophy that is couched in French Sociologist Gustave Le Bon's rhetoric of herd opposition, incorporates in elements of Nietzsche's Übermensch; and ends with a philosophy that through its combination of various diverse elements is entirely unique to Lewis.

In Prosthetic Gods, Hal Foster explores this question through the works and writings of such key modernists as Gauguin and Picasso, F. T. Marinetti and Wyndham Lewis, Adolf Loos and Max Ernst. These diverse figures were all fascinated by fictions of origin, either primordial and tribal or futuristic and technological. In this way, Foster argues, two forms came to dominate modernist art above all others: the primitive and the machine. Foster begins with the primitivist fantasies of Gauguin and Picasso, which he examines through the Freudian lens of the primal scene. He then turns to the purist obsessions of the Viennese architect Loos, who abhorred all things primitive. Next Foster considers the technophilic subjects propounded by the futurist Marinetti and the vorticist Lewis. These "new egos" are further contrasted with the "bachelor machines" proposed by the dadaist Ernst. Foster also explores extrapolations from the art of the mentally ill in the aesthetic models of Ernst, Paul Klee, and Jean Dubuffet, as well as manipulations of the female body in the surrealist photography of Brassai, Man Ray, and Hans Bellmer. Finally, he examines the impulse to dissolve the conventions of art altogether in the drip paintings of Jackson Pollock, the scatter pieces of Robert Morris, and the earthworks of Robert Smithson, and traces the evocation of lost objects of desire in sculptural work from Marcel Duchamp and Alberto Giacometti to Robert Gober. Although its title is drawn from Freud, Prosthetic Godsdoes not impose psychoanalytic theory on modernist art; rather, it sets the two into critical relation and scans the greater historical field that they share.

Credited with being the founder of the only modernist movement from Britain, Vorcticism, Lewis approached politics as an aesthetic discipline. His 1931 work Hitler was written after his visit to Germany that year, and highlights the charged atmosphere and uneasy tension that permeated Berlin. Bringing his wit and humor to analyze a country on the eve of revolution, Lewis argues that in contemporary 'emergency conditions' Hitler may truly be the best option for Germans. Branded a National Socialist sympathizer - Wyndham Lewis's reputation never recovered from the release of this book. Even later disavowals in The Hitler Cult and The Jews, Are They Human? (both in 1939) failed to restore his image. Throughout the 1930's Wyndham Lewis persisted in his advocacy of what is now termed "appeasement". During the war, he fled to the United States and Canada, all the while working to distance himself from his 1931 writings. His later work began explicitly praising a radical individualism which had been ever-present, but never before at the forefront. He returned home to England after the war, and went blind in 1951, but kept writing critiques and fiction of such quality that he had a brief renaissance of popularity before his death in 1957. Despite this, the shadow of Hitler continues to haunt the legacy of Wyndham Lewis. Antelope Hill is proud to release Wyndham Lewis's Hitler, in print for the first time since 1972, with an original foreword by John "Borzoi" Chapman, so that the reader can judge for himself the character of this unique artist.
