Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training in the Technique of Study Educational guidance as a means of securing adjustment to the individual differences of students. Recent scientific investigations have gone far in revealing the nature and the extent to which in dividual differences exist among the boys and girls enrolled in our high schools. Instead Of having to deal with a school population which is characterized by homogeneity of interests and purposes, we now realize that our students differ widely in these respects. Educational guidance represents our efforts to direct students in their educational career so that their choice of subjects will be more nearly compat ible with their individual interests and capacities. Adjustment through appropriate training in study procedures. Although significant increases in the efficiency Of our high schools will result undoubtedly from the reconstruction of the curriculum and from educational guidance, there is evidence to indicate that many students are materially handicapped in their efforts to learn because they have not been given appropriate training in the tech nique Of study. Instruction in the procedure of doing the tasks set by the school will doubtless result in an improvement in the achieve ments of these students and in a consequent decrease in the number of those who fail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Education Men of affairs often sneer at college men and col lege methods. Some of their criticisms are justified, others not. Such justification as they may have had is found in the lack of fitness in college training. Among conditions of life infinitely varied the college has decreed that all boys should take the same studies, in the same way, and at the same time, and that these studies should be the routine of the English boy of a century ago. In thus repeating the thoughts and learning of nations half forgotten, the minds of some Greek-minded and Roman-minded men were stimulated to their highest activity, and for them such training was good and adequate. But there were some, American-minded perhaps, whose powers were not awakened by such influences, These came forth from the college walls into the life of the world, as Rip Van Winkle from the Catskills, dazed by the new experiences to which their studies had given no clue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School's Cure of Souls Nor can the over-intellectualism of the university graduate be a surprize to any one who realizes the vast transformation from the older type of American college, with its deep ethical and religious character, to the university of today with its intense specialized teaching and study on the one hand, and its absorbing athletic and social life on the other - a trans formation pictured with power and fidelity by Mr. Clarence F. Birdseye in his really great book, Individual training in our colleges. What the American high school needs is just what English Rugby needed and what the immortal Arnold gave it thru his teaching and example, and as Hughes says, above all thru his unwearied zeal in creating moral thoughtfulness in every boy with whom he came into personal contact.1 Woe unto the land if its future leaders lack moral thoughtfulness in its fullest sense: both the righteous intent and the practical wis dom; only by these two elements combined in our statesmen and citizens can the republic be saved and the nation fulfil its destiny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Position and Rights of Training Colleges Explained and Defended: An Inaugural Address Delivered to the Students of the Westminster and Southlands Training Colleges, on Wednesday, February 1st, 1882 It was a pleasing change to me when - after five anxious years - I found myself able, nine years ago, to lose sight of controversies, and to select as the subject of my Address that which must always be a fundamental topic here - the religious element in Christian Day-schools. Since that time, in alternate years, as my turn has come to address the assembled students of the Colleges, it has not only been my pride and pleasure, now and again, to illustrate the eminent merits and success of our own Day-schools, as a class, among the competing schools of the kingdom, but I have felt it to be especially congenial and appropriate to deal with the higher and larger aspects of the educational question, sometimes in its relation at once to our own Church and to the national well - being, at other times in its relations to Christian principle and character, alike in the College and during the College course, as respects the student, and also in the actual life-work of the teacher in his school, and in connection with the living Church to which he and his school belong. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training: How Will It Help Women in the Next Century? Incidence of training by schooling, There is a strong positive correlation between schooling and company provided training. Approximately 15 percent of all college graduates in 1988 participated in company provided training programs that year. Only 5 percent of males and 7 percent of females who were a high school graduate or dropout participated in formal ou-the-job training. The relationship between schooling and off-the-job training is a bit different, especially for females. Female high school dropouts are much more likely to receive off-the-job training than female college graduates (10 percent vs. 9 percent). However, for males, the more schooling, the more likely an individual is to have participated in some off-the-job training. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Training in American Colleges and Universities I am greatly indebted to the venerable Dr. George C. Shattuck, of Boston, who was a pupil at Round Hill, for the following account of the physical training pursued there: Dr. Beck, the teacher of Latin, afterward the professor of Latin in Harvard Uni versity, was the teacher Of gymnastics. A large piece of ground was devoted to the purpose and furnished with all the apparatus used in the German gymnasia. The whole school was divided into classes, and each class had an hour three times a week for instruction by Dr. Beck. At the same time there were a dozen riding horses and classes for riding three times a week. Gardens were assigned the boys, in which they raised plants and vegetables. A piece of land was set apart for building huts. Base ball, hockey, and foot-ball were the games. I remember playing in a match game at the time of the Presidential election in which Adams and Jackson were candidates. The Jackson boys beat. You notice how much was done for physical training. I remember Mr. Edward Everett speaking at an annual exhibition and telling us how much better a school, how much greater advantages we enjoyed than Mr. Cogswell and himself had at Exeter. Though the school had only an existence of twenty years or less, and failed from want of pecuniary support, I believe that its influence has survived, and a great stimulus was given by it to the cause of education. Develop ing the bodily powers and strengthening the constitution were there first recognized as of great importance in the education of boys. The boys were very healthy. I only recall one death, from typhoid fever. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Nursing for the Use of Training Schools, Families, and Private Students This book, first introduced to the public by my ever-to-be-remembered friend, Prof. Edward L. Youmans, to whose most kind encouragement and assistance it owed its existence, is now for the second time revised and brought up to date under the supervision of his niece, Dr. Alice C. Youmans. It follows the same practical lines as the earlier editions, and until something more comprehensive is offered, I trust will continue to be of use to nurses both amateur and professional. Primarily designed for the latter class, I assume that elementary acquaintance with anatomy and physiology which is now of course a fundamental part of their training. The fragments of these here introduced, serving for them merely the purpose of review, may perhaps render the context more intelligible to the untrained majority whom also I hope to help. To the whole nursing sisterhood, I present it, in memory of the days when I was one of them, adding a reminder that "they never are alone who are accompanied by noble thoughts." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standards and Suggestions for Practice Teaching in the Senior Colleges of North Carolina While the education of the teacher would be both academic and professional in nature, it does not mean that these two aspects would be identical in the preparation of all teachers. Quite the contrary is true. The academic and professional de mands will vary with the needs Of the Specific fields of teaching e. G., primary, grammar grade and high school. The institution should, in the light Of these varied and specific demands, de termine what its teacher training program shall be. It should study these demands; and, in view Of the minimum certification requirements for the different fields Of teaching, together with the institution's desire to make conditions more favorable than would be demanded by those minimum requirements, decide what fields Of teaching service it will enter.
