Book excerpt: Abstract: Developing countries start the decade facing two major challenges: to continue the social and economic progress of the past 30 years in an international climate that looks less helpful; and to tackle the plight of the 800 million people living in absolute poverty, who have benefitted too little from past progress. This report examines some of the difficulties and prospects in both areas. One of its central themes is the importance of people in development. The first part of the report addresses the expected sluggish world economic growth as oil-importing countries reduce their current account deficits and adapt to higher energy costs. Domestic policies of developing countries will be crucial, and the fate of poor people in these countries will be decided largely by domestic opportunities and policies. The second part of the report describes the role of human development programs (in education, health, nutrition, and fertility reduction) and their related effects on productivity and population growth.

Book excerpt: This data book presents statistics on countries with populations of more than one million. The statistics relate to economic development and the changes it is bringing about in the world. These statistics are measures of social and economic conditions in developing and industrial countries. Five indicators of economic development are presented, including color-coded maps and charts for clarification. Many charts present changes between 1965 and 1986, the year of the most current data. Section 1, "Life Expectancy," addresses the proportion of deaths by age, the percentage of infants surviving the first year of life, and life expectancy at birth. Section 2, "Primary School Enrollment Rate," covers primary school enrollment rates (1965 and 1985), male/female enrollment rates in developing countries (1965 and 1985), and persistence in primary school (1980-1985). Section 3, "Population Growth Rate," charts growth in developing and industrial countries (1950-1986); population size, average annual growth, and average annual increase in developing countries (1965-1986); and population projections for 1986 and 2000. Section 4, "GNP per Capita," deals with gross national product, population, and GNP per capita; their growth between 1965-1980 and 1980-1986; and the distribution of world population by GNP per capita (1986). Section 5, "Merchandise Exports," analyzes the value of merchandise exports from developing and industrial countries (1960, 1981, 1986), the structure of merchandise exports of developing countries (1965 and 1986), and the flow of money into and out of developing countries (1960s and 1980s). Each section discusses relevant background information and recent developments. Sixteen indicators for 129 countries are presented in a data table. A glossary of terms is included. (GEA)

Book excerpt: This is the fourth in the World Bank's annual series assessing key development issues. Adjustment, global and national, to promote sustainable growth in the changing world economy is the main theme of this report. Recession and inflation in the industrial countries, together with the rise in oil prices, have been the main forces at work in the world economy in the 1970s. The report examines their effect on developing countries to see how adjustment has been managed and what lessons may be learned for the 1980s. Adjustment occurs through international trade and capital flows and through changes in national production and consumption patterns. The earlier chapters of the report present global and regional projections for the 1980s and consider international aspects of adjustment in trade, energy and finance. It then turns to adjustment problems of different groups of developing countries and a consideration of the prospects for human development. The report also includes the 1981 World Development Indicators, a set of 25 tables of economic and social indicators for 124 countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progress of life during growth is surprisingly uneven. This paper reaches this conclusion with a panel dataset of 95 indicators covering up to 4 time periods (1960, 1970, 1980, and 1990). The indicators cover 7 subjects: (1) individual rights and democracy, (2) political instability and war, (3) education, (4) health, (5) transport and communications, (6) inequality across class and gender, and (7) "bads". Virtually all of these indicators show quality of life across nations to be positively associated with per capita income. However, when country effects are removed using either fixed effects or an estimator in first differences, I find that the effects of growth on "life" are uneven and often nonexistent. Moreover, exogenous time shifts are more important than growth effects in the majority of indicators. With the fixed effects estimator, growth has an impact on the quality of life that is significant, positive, and more important than exogenous shifts for 12 out of 95 indicators. With a first-differences IV estimator, growth has a causal impact on the quality of life that is significant, positive, and more important than exogenous shifts for 7 out of 79 quality of life. The conclusion speculates about such explanations for the uneven results as (1) the long and variable lags that may come between growth and changes in the quality of life, and (2) the possibility that world growth is more important than home country growth for many quality of life indicators.

Book excerpt: The history of Pakistan's nuclear program is the history of Pakistan. Fascinated with the new nuclear science, the young nation's leaders launched a nuclear energy program in 1956 and consciously interwove nuclear developments into the broader narrative of Pakistani nationalism. Then, impelled first by the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan Wars, and more urgently by India's first nuclear weapon test in 1974, Pakistani senior officials tapped into the country's pool of young nuclear scientists and engineers and molded them into a motivated cadre committed to building the 'ultimate weapon.' The tenacity of this group and the central place of its mission in Pakistan's national identity allowed the program to outlast the perennial political crises of the next 20 years, culminating in the test of a nuclear device in 1998. Written by a 30-year professional in the Pakistani Army who played a senior role formulating and advocating Pakistan's security policy on nuclear and conventional arms control, this book tells the compelling story of how and why Pakistan's government, scientists, and military, persevered in the face of a wide array of obstacles to acquire nuclear weapons. It lays out the conditions that sparked the shift from a peaceful quest to acquire nuclear energy into a full-fledged weapons program, details how the nuclear program was organized, reveals the role played by outside powers in nuclear decisions, and explains how Pakistani scientists overcome the many technical hurdles they encountered. Thanks to General Khan's unique insider perspective, it unveils and unravels the fascinating and turbulent interplay of personalities and organizations that took place and reveals how international opposition to the program only made it an even more significant issue of national resolve. This book was released on 2001 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 5th edition of World development Indicators in its current format. It captures the most important issues for developing countries: health, education, welfare, sustainable use of natural resources and the reversal of environmental loss, economic growth and the management of the economy and integration with the world economy. It shows that although there has been progress in reducing extreme poverty none of the international development goals on health and education is likely to be met. The current level of aid , at some 0.24% of gross national income is far short of the target of 0.7% many countries promised.
