Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adela Florence Nicolson (1865-1904) was an English poet who wrote under the pseudonym Laurence Hope. Adela married Colonel Malcolm Hassels Nicolson and it was he who introduced her to the food and customs of India. Her poems often used imagery and symbols from the poets of the North-West Frontier of India and the Sufi poets of Persia. In 1901 she published Garden of Kama, which was published a year later in America under the title India's Love Lyrics. She attempted to pass these off as translations of various poets, but this claim soon fell under suspicion. Her love poems were very popular in the Edwardian era.

Book Synopsis The Penguin Book of Classical Indian Love Stories and Lyrics by : Ruskin Bond
Download or read book The Penguin Book of Classical Indian Love Stories and Lyrics written by Ruskin Bond and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2000-10-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation of love stories and poems from the classical literature and folklore of India Set in regions of great natural beauty where Kamadeva, the god of love, picks his victims with consummate ease, these stories and lyrics celebrate the myriad aspects of love. In addition to relatively well-known works like Kalidasa's Meghadutam and Prince Ilango Adigal's Shilappadikaram, the collection features lesser-known writers of ancient India like Damodaragupta (eighth century AD), whose 'Loves of Haralata and Dundarasena' is about a high-born man's doomed affair with a courtesan; Janna (twelfth century), whose Tale of the Glory-Bearer is extracted here for the story of a queen who betrays her handsome husband for a mahout, reputed to be the ugliest man in the kingdom; and the Sanskrit poets Amaru and Mayaru (seventh century), whose lyrics display an astonishing perspective on the tenderness, the fierce passion and the playful savagery of physical love. Also featured are charming stories of Hindu gods and goddesses in love, and nineteenth-century retellings of folk tales from different regions of the country like Kashmir, Punjab, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Both passionate and sensuous in its content, this book is sure to appeal to the romantic in all of us.

Download or read book Indian Love Lyrics written by Laurence Hope and published by . This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laurence Hope (1865-1904) was one of the most popular poets of the Edwardian era. Born Adela 'Violet' Cory, her unconventional (and ultimately tragic) life in India lent her verse an oriental glamour that immediately captured the public imagination. Her poems (known collectively as the Indian Love Lyrics) deal mostly with the subject of 'love' - romantic, erotic, frustrated or forbidden. Their passionate themes and colourful imagery are often inspired by Sufi and Mughal courtly poetry, by Indian myth and folklore, and by Hope's own travels and experiences in India and North Africa. This edition comprises three separate volumes - The Garden of Kama and Other Love Lyrics from India (1901), Stars of the Desert (1903) and the posthumously published Indian Love (1905).
