Book excerpt: Without parallel in the history of Christianity are the problems arising from the contact of the Gospel with Hinduism in India. What is the Christian's response to the sacred books, sacred rites, well-structured religio-philosophical systems and religions with a claim to universality? What should be his attitude towards the rich heritage of the profound religious experience of Hinduism? Is he to accept it or reject it? Is it possible to integrate Hindu religious experience without compromising his faith? Indian theologians have sought an answer to these and similar problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological dictionaries are foundational to any theological library. But until now there has been no Global Dictionary of Theology, a theological dictionary that presumes the contribution of the Western tradition but moves beyond it to embrace and explore a full range of global expressions of theology. The Global Dictionary of Theology is inspired by the shift of the center of Christianity from the West to the Global South. But it also reflects the increase in two-way traffic between these two sectors as well as the global awareness that has permeated popular culture to an unprecedented degree. The editorial perspective of the Global Dictionary of Theology is an ecumenical evangelicalism that is receptive to discovering new facets of truth through listening and conversation on a global scale. Thus a distinctive feature of the Global Dictionary of Theology is its conversational approach. Contributors have been called on to write in the spirit of engaging in a larger theological conversation in which alternative views are expected and invited. William A. Dyrness, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, Juan F. Martinez and Simon Chan edit approximately 250 articles written by over 100 contributors representing the global spectrum of theological perspectives. Pastors, theological teachers, theological students and lay Christian leaders will all find the Global Dictionary of Theology to be a resource that unfolds new dimensions and reveals new panoramas of theological perspective and inquiry. Here is a new launching point for doing theology in today's global context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking beyond exclusively state-oriented solutions to the management of religious diversity, this book explores ways of fostering respectful, non-violent and welcoming social relations among religious communities. It examines the question of how to balance religious diversity, individual rights and freedoms with a common national identity and moral consensus. The essays discuss the interface between state and civil society in ‘secular’ countries and look at case studies from the the West and India. They study themes such as religious education, religious diversity, pluralism, inter-religious relations and exchanges, dalits and religion, and issues arising from the lived experience of religious diversity in various countries. The volume asserts that if religious violence crosses borders, so do ideas about how to live together peacefully, theological reflection on pluralism, and lived practices of friendship across the boundaries of religious identity-groupings. Bringing together interdisciplinary scholarship from across the world, the book will interest scholars and students of philosophy, religious studies, political science, sociology and history.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Theology - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology St. Georgen in Frankfurt am Main, course: Hauptseminar: Theologische Gesellschaftskritik - heute noch möglich?, language: English, abstract: Liberation has manifold meanings. Marxists emphasise on economic and political aspects of freedom. Christianity tries to bring the role of culture and religions in the process of liberation. Traditional theologians insist on the need of personal conversion, besides liberation from oppressive socio-economic and political structures. And Dalit, Tribal and women theologians have added a socio-cultural dimension to liberation. Liberation has become an everyday topic of Indian masses. Liberation is a common concern. However, in all the varied and complex situations of India, Latin American theology can neither define our experience nor offer solutions. But it has definitely given a hermeneutical key, an important starting point of the experience of the marginalized. Thus, Indian liberation theologies like Dalit liberation theology, Feminists' theology, tribal theologies, etc., are inspirations from Latin American liberation theology. But there are quite substantial points of differences according to the foci and features. In the following I shall deal with three specific requisites for any Indian liberation theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The massive changes of Christianity during the 20th century raise the perennial question about its identity in a new, radical form. The author addresses the question of identity and asks how globalisation, religious pluralism, and the polycentric nature of Christianity affect Christian self-identification and theological reflection. First, religious life and theological reflection among believers in Jesus from Muslim and Hindu background in South Asia is presented in two empirical studies. Secondly, the findings are analysed and interpreted within a broad theoretical framework, drawing on models for syncretistic processes from history of religions, cultural anthropology, and Christian theology. Finally, the study concludes with a systematic-theological perspective on the interreligious hermeneutics underlying the changes of Christianity and discusses how interreligious hermeneutics might inform missiology as well as Christian theologies of religions and how this might challenge our understanding of the church's nature and mission. In conclusion, it is argued that a global, polycentric Christianity can be interpreted as fellowship created by the Spirit and centred on Christ.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian National independence and Church Union in the Church of South India, both in 1947, demanded a rethinking on the part of the Indian Christians with regard to the 'mission of the Church in India', the 'meaning and methods of ministry' and the 'role of theological education'. This book is a study of the quest for relevance in Indian theological education during the period 1947 to 1987. This book studies concepts of mission such as the traditional 'evangelization' and the modern 'participation in nation building'; ministry as changing from the domination of male-clergy to the participation of the laity and women; theological education as equipment of the whole church for wider involvement in Indian society within the context of poverty and religious pluralism. It deals with the four decades of thought development and indigenous experimentations, simultaneously looking at the effect of the 'evangelical' and 'ecumenical' division of the church's understanding of her mission and ministry in India. While studying several seminaries, Tamilnadu Theological Seminary is used as a case to illustrate the continuing process of the quest for relevance. An extensive bibliography, notes on people referred and a directory of theological colleges are additional resources in this work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M.M. Thomas was one of the chief architects of the modern ecumenical movement. An outstanding theologian, his original and rather unconventional explorations into ecumenical social ethics remain highly relevant even today. Long before liberation theology burst on the scene, Thomas raised his prophetic voice for the liberation of humanity from the dehumanizing structures. Focusing on the theological and social contributions of M.M. Thomas and his legacy for our times, and published with the support of the Council for World Mission to coincide with the centenary of Thomas' birth, this collection brings together an international panel of distinguished scholars, theologians and church leaders.

Book excerpt: Studies in the Intercultural History of Christianity, published by Peter Lang since 1975, is nowadays the largest series in the wide field of missiology, intercultural theology, and comparative religion/theology. The present editors decided to celebrate the publication of no less than one hundred and fifty volumes by evaluating and rethinking «intercultural theology». This book is meant to encourage Christian theology to be done more thoroughly, adequately, and effectively in the contemporary global and local setting. On the one hand, the volume offers new insights into the nature of doing biblical studies, church history, and systematic and practical theology as well as comparative theology, in an intercultural way. On the other hand, it argues for accomplishing interdisciplinary studies in the fields of theology and religion.

Book excerpt: Jobymon Skaria, an Indian St Thomas Christian Scholar, offers a critique of Indian Christian theology and suggests that constructive dialogues between Biblical and dissenting Dalit voices – such as Chokhamela, Karmamela, Ravidas, Kabir, Nandanar and Narayana Guru – could set right the imbalance within Dalit theology, and could establish dialogical partnerships between Dalit Theologians, non-Dalit Christians and Syrian Christians. Drawing on Biblical and socio-historical resources, this book examines a radical, yet overlooked aspect of Dalit cultural and religious history which would empower the Dalits in their everyday existences.
