Unfortunately this wish has never been fulfilled the situation in India to-day is growing steadily worse and worse. Despite former disappointments I have written the following words in the hope that, coming at a time when a critical stage in Indian polity has been reached, they may help in some way to mould those changes which have been fore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India of to-Day The approaching visit of T.R.H. the Prince and Princess of Wales to India must attract the attention of the West towards the Great Dependency of the British Empire and stimulate the desire of all travellers to see for themselves the wonders of a country which it should be the duty of every Britisher to become acquainted with. These notes of what may be seen of India in a ten weeks' tour have been framed upon the same plan as was adopted in Around the World through Japan. During such a tour most of the great monuments and famous sights of India, from Madura in the south to the Khaibar Pass on the north-west frontier, can be seen; and another seven weeks enables one to extend the tour to Burma, Assam, and Kashmir. The illustrations have been selected from over a thousand photographs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The empire now ruled by the Viceroy of India includes not only the great Indian peninsula stretching under the shadow of the Himalayas, from the valley Of the Indus to that of the Brahmaputra, but also the broad regions watered by the Irrawady and the Salween. This vast area of nearly square miles exceeds that of all Europe outside Russia. From the northernmost corner Of the Punjab to Cape Comorin in the south its greatest length is about 18 30 miles, while its breadth eastward from Karachi, near the mouth of the Indus, to the easternmost point of Burma, is even greater. The great mountain-wall of the Himalayas, which forms its northern boundary, curves away from the Yang-tse river westward to the Hindu Kush and the Sulaiman Hills, dividing India from China, Tibet, and Turkistan. The Sulaiman and Hala ranges shut out the Punjab and Sind from their western neighbours in Afghanistan and Baluchistan. On the east the new Burman frontier may be said to march with that of China, Laos, and Siam. The whole length of coast-line from Karachi to the southernmost point of Tenasserim has been reckoned at nearly 4000 miles, while the extent of land frontier is a thousand miles longer. But they have been years that may well count for decades in the history of the world, and not least in the history of India. Much has happened in India to confirm many of the views which I then expressed. Much has happened also to lead me to modify others, and to recognise more clearly to-day the shortcomings of a system of government, in many ways unrivalled, but subject to the inevitable limitations of alien rule. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of India: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day It were greatly to be wished that Mr. Wilson, instead of writing notes to, and continuing the History of Mill, had become himself the historian of our Indian Empire. I know no one so well qualified to write that history in all its fulness, with all the detail which would leave nothing to be desired for though Thornton's has many merits, and is written with much impartiality, it is rather a popular history, and the author avoids going much into detail, contenting himself with general views. As to Mill, I always regretted that he should have become the historian of India for though I have not the slightest doubt of his honesty, his political notions were too utopian, and his prejudices so strong, that perhaps a third Of his work is useless, and all his elaborate reasonings and theories are refuted by his annotator, often by simply showing that he was unacquainted with the real facts, and was combating a phantom of his own creation. As a writer on public law and political economy, Mr. Mill would, I think, be more in his place than as a historian. There is little of any interest to attract the eye or break the ennui of the long journey. I do not remember any tunnel the whole way. We passed along the shore of the Ganges, though not always close to it, and across plains, ex cept when, at some points, we skirted a low line of hills rising like a line of beach to this ocean of al luvial soil. There was not much visible of any of the towns we passed. The natives who crowded the station-houses were very like the people we saw every where. They pushed along in feverish anxiety to get their seats, being frequently encumbered with their bundles of household gear. Their wives and children clung to them all the while, and jabbered with nerv ous earnestness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yesterday and to-Day in India It was by the second mail in December, 1853, that I traversed the Overland route for the first time. In those days even the railway through France was incomplete. The railway from Paris dropped you at Chalons, and the steamer took you up at that point, along the Saone, to Lyons. The diligence carried you thence to Avignon, where the railway began again, taking you in triumphantly to Marseilles, with the air of having brought you all the way. This mixed mode of travelling is certainly more picturesque and pleasant than being propelled the whole way by the same agency, with as few breaks. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and the English Of the many books that have been written about India, the greater number fall, roughly speaking, into two categories. One is that of the book which sets out frankly to be a guide to certain districts of India, with, sandwiched in, notes on shikar and, in some instances, detailed descriptions of the author's daily life. The other kind of book is a highly technical treatise upon some given aspect of Indian life - historical, social or political - written by a specialist in the one particular subject undertaken. In writing this book I have aimed at neither of these two ideals, but have instead endeavoured to present to the reader some kind of a unified picture of the many, often contradictory aspects that go to make up the Indian nation and country. For it is only by taking a broad and general view, weighing one thing against another, and looking always to the end, that one can begin to understand the cross currents of present-day India's troubled life.
