Book excerpt: India and China had a glorious history of cultural and material exchanges, which developed into friendship and subsequently into camaraderie during first half of the twentieth century when both India and China fought western imperialism. Owing to serious misconceptions and misjudgements the relations remained under the shadow of animosities and mutual distrust for over three decades until Rajiv Gandhi's China visit in 1988. After 62 years of diplomatic relations between the two, there is a certain maturity in the relations, as both are sharing new responsibilities in the stupendously changing global architecture. India-China Relations: Future Perspectives is a collection of eighteen essays by eminent Indian and Chinese scholars, diplomats and political personalities, who look at the complex and multi-layered relationship from different perspectives covering various domains such as civilizational dialogue through history, the 1950s brotherhood, the border, and various other issues pertaining to education, agriculture, security, defense and economic complementarities etc. The complex and multi-layered character of the relationship makes it difficult to define as an adversarial or competitive, for there has been cooperation at various levels between the two, such as climate change and many other multilateral forums like G20 and BRICS. Notwithstanding the cooperation, there have been incremental yet cautious approaches towards cooperation in various fields from both the sides. As the global economic and political scenario is undergoing a tremendous change, and its shift to Asia is visible, the contributors feel that India and China need to handle the hypersensitive issues with care and tap the existing complementarities appropriately, or else the Asian century would not only be a distant dream, but could also endanger the peace and stability of the region and the world.

Book excerpt: India and China have a shared history of over two thousand years. Culture always has a broader aspect: connecting people to people and establishing intellectual relations based on knowledge and wisdom between the world's two great ancient civilisations, India and China. As a think tank since its inception in 2008, the Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) has recognised the significance of strengthening India-China people-to-people relations. From 2017-2019, C3S and partner think tanks organised annual International Cultural Conferences where experts shared historical lessons, contemporary insights, and indispensable foresight towards developing a structure leading to greater understanding and enhancement of inter-cultural links between India and China. C3S interviews were also conducted on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China in 2019. In this book the editor shares outlook on India-China relations in through cultural prism including its potential in post-covid times.

Book excerpt: This book examines the changing dynamics of the issues between India and China in the wake of extensive globalisation, economic slowdown, the trade wars, Covid 19, Galwan and the undercurrents in the emerging new global order. Providing a comprehensive overview of India–China relationship and the role of the USA in the context of India’s economic and security cooperation in the region, it argues that India–China relations are too complex to be defined through the binary of friendship and enmity, since it includes an element of cooperation, competition, coordination and as well as conflict and confrontation. The book also opens new avenues for research. As such it is of interest to researchers and students of Asian studies, Asian history, China studies, peace and conflict studies and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a long view of the three-party relationship, and its future prospects In this Asian century, scholars, officials and journalists are increasingly focused on the fate of the rivalry between China and India. They see the U.S. relationships with the two Asian giants as now intertwined, after having followed separate paths during the Cold War. In Fateful Triangle, Tanvi Madan argues that China's influence on the U.S.-India relationship is neither a recent nor a momentary phenomenon. Drawing on documents from India and the United States, she shows that American and Indian perceptions of and policy toward China significantly shaped U.S.-India relations in three crucial decades, from 1949 to 1979. Fateful Triangle updates our understanding of the diplomatic history of U.S.-India relations, highlighting China's central role in it, reassesses the origins and practice of Indian foreign policy and nonalignment, and provides historical context for the interactions between the three countries. Madan's assessment of this formative period in the triangular relationship is of more than historic interest. A key question today is whether the United States and India can, or should develop ever-closer ties as a way of countering China's desire to be the dominant power in the broader Asian region. Fateful Triangle argues that history shows such a partnership is neither inevitable nor impossible. A desire to offset China brought the two countries closer together in the past, and could do so again. A look to history, however, also shows that shared perceptions of an external threat from China are necessary, but insufficient, to bring India and the United States into a close and sustained alignment: that requires agreement on the nature and urgency of the threat, as well as how to approach the threat strategically, economically, and ideologically. With its long view, Fateful Triangle offers insights for both present and future policymakers as they tackle a fateful, and evolving, triangle that has regional and global implications.

While many countries have welcomed this rise, some of China’s neighbours have viewed it with concern if not consternation. What does the rise of China signify for India, given our none too smooth relationship with China and latter’s unqualified support to Pakistan in military and nuclear field? What do our leading companies feel about China? Would the Indian Ocean be the scene of stiff confrontation between India and China? Or is “China Threat” an exaggeration or hype as some would hold? This book is the result of intense discussions on the above questions in a seminar held on Dec 20/21, 2011 at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. The Chapters in this book, based on papers presented by leading experts on China both from the Government and the Private sectors covers almost all aspects of China from internal political developments, foreign policy to economy, S&T developments and Strategic capabilities, particularly with respect to India. China’s growing military and economic clout and impressive advances in trade and technology have all been analysed by various speakers who are well known for their expertise on china. China’s views on India have also been brought out succinctly. The Seminar was the first major interaction on a subject of strategic national interest. It is hoped that the book would contribute to better understanding of China by both the interested citizens of this country and the policy makers.
