Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet Miss Zukas . . . the very proper, exceedingly conscientious, and relentlessly curious local librarian of tiny Bellehaven, Washington-and one heck of an amateur sleuth! The Bellehaven police are baffled when a dead body turns up right in the middle of the library's fiction stacks. But Miss Helma Zukas-who never fails to make note of the slightest deviation from the norm of everyday life-is not willing to let this rather nasty disruption stand. Her precious literary sanctuary has been violated, and if the local law cannot get to the bottom of this case, Miss Zukas certainly intends to-with the help of her not-so-proper best friend, Ruth, a six-foot-tall bohemian artist with a nose for gossip and a penchant for getting into trouble. But their research project is bringing them a little too close to a killer . . . who'd like nothing better than to write Helma and Ruth out of the story completely!

Book Synopsis United States Code by : United States
Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 1150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Book excerpt: Hardy (management, McGill U.) examines how Canadian university administrators responded to declining enrolment, funding cutbacks, and public demands for more accountability during the 1980s. Citing six examples, she argues that their efforts to centralize authority and reallocate resources have failed to account for the political realities of university life and conflict, and recommends they take a broader view and seek consensus among competitors for scarce resources. Download or read book Firearm Abuse written by Steven Brill and published by Police Foundation. This book was released on 1977 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of statistics from Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington (DC) to study trends in firearm abuse as a first step toward developing policy alternatives. This study represents the first sustained effort to examine, from the police perspective, the problem of firearm abuse by using police records. Some intriguing information has been developed. For example, a significant finding emerges from an examination of samples of firearms confiscated in ten cities. Data show the frequency with which higher-priced, well-known brands of handguns appear in the samples of firearms believed to be involved in murder, robbery, assault and other felonies. This evidence clearly indicates that the belief that so-called Saturday night specials (inexpensive handguns) are used to commit the great majority of these felonies is misleading and counterproductive and can confuse the police administrator in confronting the problem of firearm abuse. The variations in firearm confiscation rates among the ten cities studied in this report suggest that police policy and procedures in these cities should be studied further so that police efforts to confiscate illegally possessed firearms can be improved.
