Book excerpt: In almost every volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, revisions or supplements interfere with the systematization of the Latin inscriptions. New editions, corrections, annotations, and addenda pertaining to previously published inscriptions make it difficult to keep track. They are, however, the necessary consequence of the growth in the collection of inscriptions from the Roman Empire, a body of material constantly in need of updating. The 150th anniversary of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum is being marked by the publication of the Index numerorum, which provides the entire corpus with a catalogue of all inscription references that are scattered in diverse publications. The Index is an invaluable resource for the epigrapher wishing to maintain a grasp of nearly 200,000 inscriptions. It also contains cross-references to the publication of inscriptions in the Ephemeris epigraphica, Bücheler's Carmina Latina epigraphica, Dessau's Inscriptiones Latinae selectae, Hübner's Exempla scripturae epigraphicae, the Greek inscriptions documented in Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum and Inscriptiones Graeca, and the Inscriptiones Christianae urbis Romae.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances our understanding of the place of Latin inscriptions in the Roman world. It enables readers, especially those new to the subject, to appreciate both the potential and the limitations of inscriptions as historical source material, by considering the diversity of epigraphic culture in the Roman world and how it has been transmitted to the twenty-first century. The first chapter offers an epigraphic sample drawn from the Bay of Naples, illustrating the dynamic epigraphic culture of that region. The second explores in detail the nature of epigraphic culture in the Roman world, probing the limitations of traditional ways of dividing up inscriptions into different categories, and offering examples of how epigraphic culture developed in different geographical, social and religious contexts. It examines the 'life-cycle' of inscriptions - how they were produced, viewed, reused and destroyed. Finally, the third provides guidance on deciphering inscriptions face-to-face and handling specialist epigraphic publications.

Download or read book Private and Public Lies written by Andrew J. Turner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graeco-Roman literary works, historiography, and even the reporting of rumours were couched as if they came in response to an insatiable desire by ordinary citizens to know everything about the lives of their leaders, and to hold them to account, at some level, for their abuse of constitutional powers for personal ends. Ancient writers were equally fascinated with how these same individuals used deceit as a powerful tool to disguise private and public reality. The chapters in this collection examine the themes of despotism and deceit from both historical and literary perspectives, over a range of historical periods including classical Athens, the Hellenistic kingdoms, late republican and early imperial Rome, late antiquity, and Byzantium.
