Book excerpt: Independent Variables for Optical Surfacing Systems discusses the characterization and application of independent variables of optical surfacing systems and introduces the basic principles of surfacing technologies and common surfacing systems. All the pivotal variables influencing surface quality are analyzed; evaluation methods for surface quality, the removal capability of tool influence functions, and a series of novel optical surfacing systems are introduced. The book also particularly focuses on the multi-path mode and dwell time used for deterministic surfacing. Researchers and graduate students working in optical engineering will benefit from this book; optical engineers in the industry will also find it a valuable reference work. Haobo Cheng is a professor at Beijing Institute of Technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete all-in-one reference to aspheric fabricationand testing for optical applications This book provides a detailed introduction to the manufacturingand measurement technologies in aspheric fabrication. For eachtechnology, both basic theory and practical applications areintroduced. The book consists of two parts. In the first part, the basicprinciples of manufacturing technology for aspheric surfaces andkey theory for deterministic subaperture polishing of asphericsurfaces are discussed. Then key techniques for high precisionfiguring such as CCOS with small polishing pad, IBF and MRF, areintroduced, including the basic principles, theories andapplications, mathematical modeling methods, machine design andprocess parameter selection. It also includes engineeringpractices and experimental results, based on the three kinds ofpolishing tools (CCOS, IBF and MRF) developed by the author’s research team. In the second part, basic principles of measurement and sometypical examples for large and middle-scale aspheric surfaces arediscussed. Then, according to the demands of low cost, highaccuracy and in-situ measurement methods in the manufacturingprocess, three kinds of technologies are introduced, such as theCartesian and swing-arm polar coordinate profilometer, thesub-aperture stitching interferometer and the phase retrievalmethod based on diffraction principle. Some key techniques are alsodiscussed, including the basic principles, mathematical modelingmethods, machine design and process parameter selection, as well asengineering practices and experimental results. Finally, theteam’s research results about subsurface quality measurementand guarantee methods are also described. This book can be used as a reference for scientists andtechnologists working in optical manufacturing, ultra-precisionmachining, precision instruments and measurement, and otherprecision engineering fields. A complete all-in-one reference to aspheric fabrication andtesting for optical applications Presents the latest research findings from the author’sinternationally recognized leading team who are at the cutting edgeof the technology Brings together surface processing and measurement in onecomplete volume, discussing problems and solutions Guides the reader from an introductory overview through to moreadvanced and sophisticated techniques of metrology andmanufacturing, suitable for the student and the industryprofessional

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs homogeneous coordinate notation to compute the first- and second-order derivative matrices of various optical quantities. It will be one of the important mathematical tools for automatic optical design. The traditional geometrical optics is based on raytracing only. It is very difficult, if possible, to compute the first- and second-order derivatives of a ray and optical path length with respect to system variables, since they are recursive functions. Consequently, current commercial software packages use a finite difference approximation methodology to estimate these derivatives for use in optical design and analysis. Furthermore, previous publications of geometrical optics use vector notation, which is comparatively awkward for computations for non-axially symmetrical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book computes the first- and second-order derivative matrices of skew ray and optical path length, while also providing an important mathematical tool for automatic optical design. This book consists of three parts. Part One reviews the basic theories of skew-ray tracing, paraxial optics and primary aberrations – essential reading that lays the foundation for the modeling work presented in the rest of this book. Part Two derives the Jacobian matrices of a ray and its optical path length. Although this issue is also addressed in other publications, they generally fail to consider all of the variables of a non-axially symmetrical system. The modeling work thus provides a more robust framework for the analysis and design of non-axially symmetrical systems such as prisms and head-up displays. Lastly, Part Three proposes a computational scheme for deriving the Hessian matrices of a ray and its optical path length, offering an effective means of determining an appropriate search direction when tuning the system variables in the system design process.
