Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the implementation of readers' theater would affect fluency of fourth grade students and how it affected their reading ability. This research was conducted with my reading group, but actual documentation was taken on four students. All four students had tested below the norm set for the fall fourth grade oral reading fluency (ORF) level for words per minute (WPM). Students received a readers' theater script at the beginning of every other week. Four times each week instructional reading time of fifteen to thirty minutes was spent reading, rereading, and practicing. At the culmination of the second week, the group performed for one or more neighboring fourth grade classrooms. Every two weeks a new script was provided for the group. This gave my students multiple opportunities to become more confident in their ability to read in front of a group. It gave them time to enjoy reading and enabled them to perform written text. Data has shown significant gains in fluency. It also shows that students had a positive experience, which encouraged a more confident, positive attitude towards reading.

Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: The following Action Research Project Report is to improve the oral reading fluency of the 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities. The targeted population participating in this study consisted of a total of ten participants of which five were 4th grade students and five were 5th grade students located in a middle class community within in a suburb of a large metropolitan area. The problem of poor reading fluency was documented through a student survey, a one-minute timed reading, and a 4-point fluency rubric. Analysis of probable cause data revealed that students with learning disabilities frequently do not automatically acquire this skill. Therefore, direct instruction is necessary on how and why to read fluently. After a review of the solution strategies, the intervention implemented was Readers' Theatre which incorporates repeated reading in a natural format as the students practice their lines. Post intervention data suggest the repeated readings incorporated through Readers' Theatre had a positive affect on oral reading fluency. Students increased words read accurately per minute, the fluency rubric indicated students were reading more fluently, and their attitude towards reading had a positive affect according to a student survey. The teacher researcher highly recommends repeated reading by using Readers' Theatre to increase reading fluency. (Contains 5 tables, 24 figures, and 8 appendices.) Additional assessments included anecdotal notes, student self-evaluations, and running records. Students were given reader's theater scripts at the beginning of each week of practice, with a final performance being given at the end of the week. The results of this study showed an increase in fluency from pre- to post-assessment using the BRI, and students and parents felt fluency had increased as well.

To what extent does having families involved at home have on a first graders reading fluency at school? Research activities: This research explores to the use of Reader's Theater as an approach to teaching and building oral reading fluency, and motivating students to re-read text in first grade. Context: The study took place in a self-contained first grade classroom at a public school in California. The research focused on five students. Four of the students included were English Language Learners whose primary language is Spanish. Two of the students were repeating first grade. Methods and data: The intervention lasted three weeks in which scripts were selected for groups of students to read over the course of a week and present on Friday. Partner work and group work was used as a means to increase engagement. Data sets include pre and post Developmental Reading Survey results, oral reading fluency rubric scores, an attitudinal survey, behavior tallies, observation field notes, and student reading inventories. Results: Comparisons of baseline and outcome data indicate that Reader's Theater can promote oral reading fluency. Focus students reading fluency scores increased each week. In addition, students overall reading scores improved and in some cases increased by two levels. Conclusions: Results suggest that students are more motivated to re-read text when using Reader's Theater as it is engaging and enjoyable. Using Reader's Theater increased student's awareness of punctuation, expression, and gestures while reading. Grade Level: First Grade. Book excerpt: The authors of this action research project report implemented oral reading fluency-based interventions for the purpose of improving students' reading comprehension. Six students in grade three, six students in grade five and six students in grade six participated in the study from Monday, August 27 through Friday, December 7, 2007. Researchers observed that in the targeted reading groups, deficiencies in any element of oral reading fluency were associated with reading comprehension problems. The teacher researchers used the following tools to document evidence; Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Oral Reading Fluency (ORF), which indicated that 50% of students at Site A and 83% of students at Site B were below benchmark score for oral reading fluency. The comprehension based assessment (Choose-A-Title) resulted in 61% of the students choosing the incorrect title. As a result of the student survey, it indicated that 17% of the students responded "almost never" when asked "I think others like my reading". Students' struggles with accuracy, rate, and prosody revealed deficiencies that inhibited the processing of meaning. The interventions implemented were three 20-minute weekly sessions consisting of one session of reader's theater activities including choral reading, echo reading, and poetry, and two sessions of partner reading during which student pairs engaged in repeated oral reading and reading along silently while listening as oral reading was modeled. Teachers are encouraged to model fluent reading illustrating proper rate and accuracy. Reading and rereading exercises such as reading with a model reader, choral reading, reader's theater, and partner reading can improve fluency (Vaughn & Linan-Thompson, 2004). As a result of the interventions, students demonstrated increased awareness of the three elements of oral reading fluency: accuracy, rate, and prosody. Students practiced self-monitoring these elements while participating in paired reading and cooperative learning groups. The post data revealed that there was a decrease in students' positive responses to "I read with expression and feeling". Thirty-three percent of students responded "almost always" on pre documentation and 28% on post documentation. The "usually" category declined from 50% to 44%. Students responded best to interventions that involved repeated reading in the form of rehearsal followed by performance, such as choral poetry reading and reader's theater. Students demonstrated engagement in the activities while becoming more realistic in self-evaluation.
