Abstract: The Earth's resources are being depleted faster than they can be replenished, hence adopting and promoting more sustainable ways of living that are in harmony with our communities is a crucial way to combat environmental degradation. The role of education has gained increasing recognition as a catalyst for building a better and more sustainable. There is now a growing international recognition of Education for Sustainable Development as an integral element of quality education and a key enabler for sustainable development. All individuals, especially the youth, will be equipped and empowered by knowledge, skills and values to action for conservation. In Hong Kong, Education for Sustainable Development is not stated in formal curriculum or the core course in higher education. Education sector is too focus on enhancing green campus facilities and imparting environmental knowledge but has been underrating the importance of learning pedagogy and its impact on learners' environmental literacy. This paper shows an Education for Sustainable Development programme which uses experiential learning approach to enhance university students' environmental literacy by Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre of WWF Hong Kong. Using the data gathered from field note, written discourse and interview, the four components of Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle has been shown to transform and internalized student's learning experience to enhance their environmental literacy. This paper also explores how this type of experiential learning can be further enhanced to increase the students' environmental literacy. Recommendations were discussed for Hoi Ho Marine Life Centre to enhance their future education for sustainable development programme. Subjects: Environmental education - China - Hong Kong

Book excerpt: Many children today may not be familiar with nature due to lack of experience and education in the outdoors. If they are not exposed to nature, then they will not be as comfortable in the outdoors. This study evaluates the effectiveness of educational activities at the Watershed Center in Springfield, Missouri on high school students’ and college level pre-service teachers’ knowledge, comfort levels, attitudes, and actions toward the outdoor environment. Post-field trip responses of students who came to the Watershed Center were compared to students who did not participate in a field trip. Teachers were also surveyed to assess why they brought their classes to the Watershed Center. This study found significant differences in knowledge, action scores, and attitude scores between field trip participants and non-field trip participants. Approximately 50 percent of teachers responded saying they enjoyed the hands-on activities the Watershed Center provides. The natural environment depends on people caring. Short-term experiences in the outdoors can make differences in students’ attitudes and future actions.

The Minnesota Report Card on Environmental Literacy will be used to compare groups. 3) Should schools provide greater access to wilderness experiences? Students answered a pre-survey and a post-survey with questions from the Minnesota Report Card on Environmental Literacy. Chaperones on the wilderness trip recorded environmental attitudes and behaviors they noticed while on the trip. Students also kept reflective journals indicating environmental attitudes and behaviors. Literature related to environmental knowledge, attitudes and behaviors have been referenced in this capstone. Many students' environmental knowledge, attitudes and behaviors showed no change. Students did report spending more time outdoors after the trip as well as an increased knowledge of sources of water pollution and a belief in environmental education being provided in schools" --
