Download or read book Income Inequality in the European Union and its relation to health and social problems written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: Why are health and social problems in the EU related to income inequality within countries, rather than per capita income? With regard to Wilkinson and Pickett’s studies in “The Spirit Level” (2010), I am demonstrating the relation of health and social problems with income inequality for EU countries and compare the results with the European Social Policy Models described by Boeri (2002) and Sapir (2005). At least since the “Occupy Wall Street” and the “We are the 99 percent” movements started to dominate newspaper headlines, the problem of unequally allocated disposable income has gained more attention by policy makers around the globe. In reconstruction times following WWII, gains in income have been shared almost equally between income quintile groups until the late 1970s - when the Great Convergence ended. Politicians and economists have therefore increased their interest in finding other indicators for economic performance rather than only casting an eye on GDP growth. I will thus investigate why health and social problems are far more related to income inequality rather than GDP growth or per capita income. To understand the situation especially in the European Union (EU) I will subsequently explain the underlying circumstances.

Book Synopsis Globalization and Income Inequality by : Thomas Harjes
Download or read book Globalization and Income Inequality written by Thomas Harjes and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing concern in Europe over the impact of globalization on high and evenly shared living standards. These concerns have often surfaced in response to falling labor income shares in aggregate national income data. However, these data may tell little about the underlying distribution of incomes based on household disposable incomes. While summary measures of income distributions also suggest that inequality has increased in most industrialized countries, this development was very uneven and much less pronounced in euro-area countries, suggesting that broad phenomena such as trade liberalization and technological change may not be major drivers of inequality.

Download or read book Exploring Inequality in Europe written by Martin Heidenreich and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe has become a dominant frame for the generation, regulation and perception of social inequalities. This trend was solidified by the current economic crisis, which is characterized by increasing inequalities between central and peripheral countries and groups. By analysing the double polarization between winners and losers of the crisis, the segmentation of labour markets and the perceived quality of life in Europe, this book contributes to a better understanding of patterns and dynamics of inequality in an integrated Europe.

This volume examines the following questions: what are the main transformations in the world of work over the last 20 years in terms of the labour market, social dialogue, and conditions of work, wages and incomes that may have affected the middle class? How has the middle class been altered by the financial and economic crisis? What are the long-term trends for the middle class in Europe?

Book Synopsis European Social Statistics by : European Commission
Download or read book European Social Statistics written by European Commission and published by . This book was released on 2003-08-22 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides information on income poverty and social exclusion in the EU, both in individual member states and as a whole, using the most recent data from the European Community Household Panel survey. It presents cross-sectional statistics which explore the association between monetary and non-monetary aspects of poverty and deprivation. Issues discussed include: the conceptual and methodological framework; income distribution and risk of income poverty; the dynamics of income poverty risk; lifestyle deprivation; and the role of social transfers. In 1997, the UK, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Denmark were found to have average income levels above the country average, with Portugal, Greece and Spain the least prosperous of EU member states, and average income levels rising at the fastest rate in the Republic of Ireland.
Book Synopsis The Distribution of Income in Eastern Europe by : Anthony Barnes Atkinson
Download or read book The Distribution of Income in Eastern Europe written by Anthony Barnes Atkinson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the distribution of household incomes in Eastern Europe before the economic transformation that began in 1990. Was there less inequality in these countries under Communism than in Western economies? Many people appear to believe that no such data exist for Eastern Europe. Such common impressions are, however, largely based on the situation in the former Soviet Union, and the position in the Central European countries has been quite different. The first aim of the paper is to present the evidence about the distribution of income in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and the former USSR in the mid-1980s and to make a comparison with the UK. The findings confirm that income inequality in Czechoslovakia is substantially less than in the UK. At the same time, our results bring out the differences within Eastern Europe. The distribution for Hungary appears relatively close to that in Czechoslovakia, but the Lorenz curves for these two countries lie comfortably inside those for Poland and the former USSR. In drawing attention to the availability of evidence on income inequality in Eastern Europe, we are not suggesting that such data are perfect. The household surveys, particularly that in the former USSR, are subject to a number of qualifications. The limitations of the evidence are the subject of the fourth section of the paper.
Book Synopsis Curse or Blessing. The implementation of the European Monetary Union and its impact on the income distribution in Europe by : Julian Hoffmeister

The implementation of the European Monetary Union and its impact on the income distribution in Europe written by Julian Hoffmeister and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,0, University of Hamburg (Department of Economics), course: Globalization, Development, Poverty & Inequality, language: English, abstract: In recent years there has been a growing concern about inequality in Europe among politicians, economists and the population. In 2013 in her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Christine Lagarde underpinned the importance of equal distribution by saying that "Excessive inequality is corrosive to growth; it is corrosive to society. I believe that the economics profession and the policy community have downplayed inequality for too long. Now all of us - including the IMF - have a better understanding that a more equal distribution of income allows for more economic stability, more sustained economic growth, and healthier societies with stronger bonds of cohesion and trust."

Book Synopsis Income Distribution in Historical Perspective by : Y. S. Brenner
Download or read book Income Distribution in Historical Perspective written by Y. S. Brenner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-10-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume a distinguished team of international contributors consider some of the central long-term issues raised by the problem of income distribution. The Kuznets curve--i.e. the notion that income distribution became increasingly unequal during the period of industrialization, and progressively less unequal during the twentieth century--lies at the center of much of the analysis, and its relevance is discussed in a wide-ranging series of articles covering the British, Belgian, German, Australian, Austrian and American experiences. This volume is the first in many years to take such a broad, comparative approach to income distribution, and makes an important and authoritative contribution to an area of perennial debate.
