Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incidents of Shipwreck, or the Loss of the San Francisco Render the present publication supererogatory. But it has been represented to me that there are numbers whom it is desirable to reach, who probably never read the letter in the Recorder, and to whom the melancholy details of the shipwreck, might now be rendered accessi ble if published in the form of a small volume. It is but right also that some such permanent record of those transactions should remain behind - that the great moral lesson taught by so severe a visitation of Divine Provi dence might not be altogether lost. It is with these. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every shipwreck has a story that extends far beyond its tragic end. The dramatic tales of disaster, heroism, and folly become even more compelling when viewed as junction points in history—connecting to stories about the frontier, the environment, immigration, politics, technology, and industry. In Stories from the Wreckage, John Odin Jensen examines a selection of Great Lakes shipwrecks of the wooden age for a deeper dive into this transformative chapter of maritime history. He mines the archeological evidence and historic record to show how their tragic ends fit in with the larger narrative of Midwestern history. Featuring the underwater photography of maritime archeologist Tamara Thomsen, this vibrant volume is a must-have for shipping enthusiasts as well as anyone interested in the power of water to shape history.

Book Synopsis Shipwrecks of Curry County by : H.S. Contino
Download or read book Shipwrecks of Curry County written by H.S. Contino and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, mariners considered the Oregon coast one of the most dangerous in the world. In 1852, explorers discovered gold in the rivers and along the beaches in Curry County, which is located in the southwestern corner of the state. Subsequent settlement concentrated on the coast. With few roads, water transportation was crucial for early settlers. The area contained many potential dangers to ships, including unpredictable weather, frequent fog, and submerged rocks and reefs. There have been many shipwrecks in the area like that of the tanker Larry Doheny, which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during World War II. Curry County is home to Cape Blanco, the second most westerly point in the continental United States, and Port Orford, the only open-water port on the Oregon coast (and one of only six "dolly" ports in the world). Modern technology and port improvements have reduced the number of shipwrecks, but accidents still occur.
Book Synopsis Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Tragedy and Triumph by : Donald Wilding
Download or read book Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Tragedy and Triumph written by Donald Wilding and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the wreck of the Sparrow-Hawk in 1626 to the grounding of the Eldia in 1984, Cape Cod's outer beach--often referred to as the "Graveyard of Ships"--saw the demise of more than three thousand vessels along forty miles of shifting shoals. The October Gale of 1841 claimed the lives of fifty-seven sailors from Truro, a devastating toll for a small seaside community. Survivors from the 1896 wreck of the Monte Tabor in Provincetown were arrested for a suspected mutiny. Aboard the Castagna, which stranded off Wellfleet in 1914, several sailors froze to death in the masts, while the crew's cat survived. Local author Don Wilding revisits these and many other maritime disasters, along with the heroic, and sometimes tragic, rescue efforts of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and Coast Guard.

Download or read book Mayday! written by Van Field and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From dramatic rescues to coastal catastrophes, a riveting collection of maritime lore from the eastern shore of Long Island. Since the mid-1600s, eastern Long Island’s shoals, sandbars, and assorted submerged hazards have caused many an unlucky vessel to become shipwrecked. The frequency of wrecks rose to a grim crescendo during the mid-nineteenth century, as New York and New England peaked as shipping centers. Then came the dawn of the twentieth century and the arrival of advanced navigational aids. Although the number of wrecks declined, the high drama persisted—as rumrunners and German submarines kept the coast humming with rumors and anticipation. This book painstakingly assembles a compendium of Long Island’s most harrowing, amazing, and notorious shipwrecks and ocean-going incidents for a thrilling and sometimes terrifying read.
