Book excerpt: Despite the growing recognition of the prevalence of incest which is challenging traditional views about the family as a safe haven for children, there is a serious paucity of scientific research on incest in South Africa in the new field of family violence. Almost a century after Sigmund Freud dismissed most women's reports of incest victimization as wishful fantasy, the extent of the damage done by this form of abuse remains controversial in South Africa, with some researchers maintaining that incest victims often suffer no severe effects. This report presents the findings of a qualitative study designed to explore the short- and long-term effects of incestuous abuse experienced by 20 adult women incest survivors. Although all but one of the in-depth interviews were conducted with women who at the time were residing in Cape Town, the places in which the incestuous abuse had occurred are dispersed throughout South Africa. The purpose of this study is to inform policy discussions on incestuous abuse, violence in South Africa, and violence against women in general. Includes information on prevalence of incestuous abuse, study methodology, characteristics of incestuous abuse, initial effects abuse; and long-terms effects. The document provides extensive tables and three appendices. (JBJ)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a parent singles out a child for special privileges and attention, that child is often unaware that the relationship is unhealthy—even incestuous. As adults, these children struggle to feel validated, because while they have not been directly abused, they feel a sense of violation and crossed boundaries—usually done in the name of 'love' and 'caring.' The parent's love feels more confining than freeing, more demanding than giving, more intrusive than nurturing. Yet these children suffer from what psychologist Kenneth Adams calls The Silent Seduction—because there is nothing loving or caring about a close parent-child relationship that services the needs of the parent rather than the child. In this revised and updated 20th anniversary edition of his groundbreaking book Silently Seduced, Dr. Adams explains how 'feeling close,' especially with the opposite-sex parent, is not the source of comfort the image suggests, especially when that child is cheated out of a childhood by being a parent's surrogate partner. He offers a framework to understand this covert incest and its effect on sexuality, intimacy, and relationships, and how victims can begin the process of recovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A working guide to the treatment of survivors of sexual victimization, this book treats rape, incest, and harassment as related forms of sexual abuse. It reviews present literature on the long-term effects of sexual assault and considers the services and support that survivors require. Covering a wide range of issues and treatment approaches, focus is placed on the older adolescent and adult. The phases of recovery followng sexual abuse are described together with the type of assistance most appropriate at each phase. The authors provide numerous case studies and emphasize the individuality of both survivor and response. This guide should be used by both professional and layperson to help the sexually abused transcend feelings of victimization. Rape, Incest, and Sexual Harassment discusses the issues raised by victimization. It then deals with the immediate aftermath of sexual abuse focusing on crisis intervention and advocacy with respect to emotional, medical, and legal needs. One section, devoted to counselors working with long-term effects on survivors, matches interventions to the individual client's needs and offers models for counseling frameworks. Special needs are also addressed. The book concludes with a look at the larger social problems associated with abuse and violence.

The volume’s three sections are based on the authors’ three stages of therapy: creating a context for change; challenging behaviors, expanding alternatives; and consolidation. First published in 1990. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.
