Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: This book is . . . devoted to the first literature of North America, that of the American Indians, or Native Americans. The texts are from the North Pacific Coast, because that is where I am from, and those are the materials I know best. The purpose is general: All traditional American Indian verbal art requires attention of this kind if we are to comprehend what it is and says. There is linguistics in this book, and that will put some people off. ''Too technical," they will say. Perhaps such people would be amused to know that many linguists will not regard the work as linguistics. "Not theoretical," they will say, meaning not part of a certain school of grammar. And many folklorists and anthropologists are likely to say, "too linguistic" and "too literary" both, whereas professors of literature are likely to say, "anthropological" or "folklore," not "literature" at all. But there is no help for it. As with Beowulf and The Tale of Genji, the material requires some understanding of a way of life. Within that way of life, it has in part a role that in English can only be called that of "literature." Within that way of life, and now, I hope, within others, it offers some of the rewards and joys of literature. And if linguistics is the study of language, not grammar alone, then the study of these materials adds to what is known about language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pain Almost In Vain is a real-life account of a nervous disorder patient from the moment he was diagnosed, through his journey finding the cure, not curing, up till rehabilitation. His disorder affects his sensory, muscle motors and digestive system. He is still in continuous pain due to his skin hypersensitiveness, burning sensation, muscle cramps, stiffness, numbness, imbalance and a slightly improved digestive system. He writes about how his disorder brought him to meet different practitioners and people who have changed his outlook towards life. He approached his predicament as a normal human with remorse, anger, frustration and he didn't hide his real feelings. He expressed what he sees and experienced in a casual, sincere and slightly humorous manner. In Pain Almost In Vain shows how all problems should be faced in a child-like attitude, trying everything possible, listen to suggestions and do it without worrying about the results because we are not the one determining it. He realized from his ailment that out there, people are readily willing to help him, not individualistic as he perceived. He has learned that being with other patients is an education. It is a book about appreciation, love and hope.

Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Vera’s newlywed husband, out of a sense of patriotic duty, enlists to deploy to Iraq. And Lewis is a U.S. Army private caught in the middle of the Iraqi war violence. When a routine mission in Iraq turns tragic, Lewis is left with deep emotional scars and a final mission of his own—to deliver a fallen comrade’s letter. Out of feelings of guilt and a need for penance, Lewis decides that the only proper way to deliver the letter is by foot, which is how he ends up on a cross country journey through the United States. While Lewis sojourns, Silvio has adopted a mission of his own. Witnessing the abrupt mortality and lackluster funeral of his parents, Silvio is on a mission to be remembered. And, he decides, what better way to be remembered than to be immortalized as a saint? Contrasted with the cynical Vera, Silvio becomes somewhat of a cult figure in their community, and when Lewis finally makes it to their small town, Silvio is convinced that he’s found the perfect person to carry out his martyrdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Céline’s masterpiece—colloquial, polemic, hyper-realistic, boiling over with black humor Céline’s masterpiece—colloquial, polemic, hyper realistic—boils over with bitter humor and revulsion at society’s idiocy and hypocrisy: Journey to the End of the Night is a literary symphony of cruelty and violence that hurtles through the improbable travels of the petit bourgeois (and largely autobiographical) antihero, Bardamu: from the trenches of WWI, to the African jungle, to New York, to the Ford Factory in Detroit, and finally to life in Paris as a failed doctor. Ralph Manheim’s pitch-perfect translation captures Céline’s savage energy, and a dynamic afterword by William T. Vollmann presents a fresh, furiously alive take on this astonishing novel.
