Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Town Other Conversations The reader is to picture Mrs. Fletcher's drawing room. It has white panelled walls, a dark, polished floor, and Adams chairs of gold - colored cane and gaily painted wood, standing at distances suggestive of intimate conversation. One or two charming contemporary French pictures, an elaborate Florentine mirror, antique gilt sconces for the lights, and two remarkably good examples of Chinese porcelain, are the only ornaments to be seen. There are a few books lying about, evidently those of a woman, as they are for the most part of the modern school scorned by the American man. They show a becoming interest in the arts and a tendency, in the poetry and fiction, to intimate analysis that implies a person awakened. The room is restrained and has an effect of discrimination that is to be won only by elimination. One feels that its creator has learned the value, in a crowded life, of surroundings that give an artificial suggestion of deliberation and tranquility. I 've chosen ever so many routes, gone several times to the station, and twice even bought a ticket; but while what we poor fools call our better judgment dragged my very mortal body away from town, my heart full of love, and heavy because I feel you will say for you to receive - or any rate to return that love, would be wrong, my heart (and God bless it!) held me back fast, in the place where you see the sun shine, and the moon rise. Can you make head or tail of me, my darling Mrs. Peggy? Which of coursel mustn't call you unless you grant me permission to; will you? The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one! Book excerpt: After the execution of Socrates in 399 BC, a number of his followers wrote dialogues featuring him as the protagonist and, in so doing, transformed the great philosopher into a legendary figure. Xenophon's portrait is the only one other than Plato's to survive, and while it offers a very personal interpretation of Socratic thought, it also reveals much about the man and his philosophical views. In 'Socrates' Defence' Xenophon defends his mentor against charges of arrogance made at his trial, while the 'Memoirs of Socrates' also starts with an impassioned plea for the rehabilitation of a wronged reputation. Along with 'The Estate-Manager', a practical economic treatise, and 'The Dinner-Party', a sparkling exploration of love, Xenophon's dialogues offer fascinating insights into the Socratic world and into the intellectual atmosphere and daily life of ancient Greece.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Humours and Conversations of the Town (1693) Such a book IS The H amours and C onversations of the T own which IS here presented in facsimile over two centuries and a half after its publication in 1693. The allusion hunters have rifled its con tents for Shakespeare and Spenser, but Dryden, Cowley, Butler, Nat Lee, Otway, Denham, and Etherege lie here reputation-wise in their pristine states. Here, too, are Jo Hams and charming Phyllis and Whittington and his cat as well as Mr Rymer and Mr Creech, abundant observa tions on the Royal Society and the New Science, and repeated mention of the London haunts of the beau monde and the demimonde. There is much talk of the theater, of London Wits and rakehells. Of coquetry and sin, and an extenswe contrast of urban life with rural life that eclipses Horace's Town Mouse and Country Mouse in convivial argument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Une Semaine A Paris: With a Series of Illustrated Conversations During my former residence in Paris I had found that one may study the language for years and yet be quite helpless, or at the mercy of hired guides, when going about the city. The phrases and stories of the usual text-books, however well learned, do not enable the foreigner to order a dinner at a restaurant, to do his shopping, nor to pronounce the names of the streets, churches, museums, etc., intelligibly to the natives. The policeman of whom information may be asked upon the street may not understand the question, nor the bewildered inquirer the answer, and the policeman, the omnibus conductor, the cabman, the salesman, the waiter, will rarely help the stranger out of his trouble by any slowness of speech or by under standing a word of the foreign language. The double purpose of these conversations is to make the visitor acquainted both with the physical features of the city and with the information and phrases necessary to get about independently and to enjoy the sights as he' would in his own country, with the least expense of time and money. He will hear around him the language of every nation in the civilised world. He will behold faces Of every hue and variety Of expression. He will meet with men Of every possible calling. All this is peculiarly true in the latter part of the summer season. Then the motley population of New Orleans fly from the annual scourge of the yellow fever, and seek safety in the cities that lie further north. Of these. St. Louis is a favourite 'city of refuge, ' the Creole element Of its population being related to that kindred race in the South, and keeping up with it this annual correspondence.
