Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short book Peter Sloterdijk clarifies his views on religion and its role in pre-modern and modern societies. He begins by returning to the Mount Sinai episode in the Book of Exodus, where he identifies the emergence of what he calls the Sinai Schema. At the core of monotheism is the logic of belonging to a community of confession, of being a true believer - this is what Sloterdijk calls the Sinai Schema. To be a member of a people means that you submit to the beliefs of the community just as you submit to its language. Monotheism is predicated on the logic of one God who demands your utmost loyalty. Hence at the core of monotheism is also the fear of apotheosis, of heresy, of heterodoxy. So monotheism is associated first and foremost with a certain kind of internal violence Ð namely, a violence against those who violate their membership through a break in loyalty and trust. On the basis of this analysis of the inner logic of monotheism, Sloterdijk retraces its historical legacy and shows how this account enables us to understand why we react so nervously today to all forms of fundamentalism - whether that of radical Islamists, the Catholic Pius Brotherhood or evangelical sects in the USA

Book excerpt: IN THE SHADOW OF SINAI: A STORY OF TRAVEL AND RESEARCH FROM 1895-1897 and HOW THE CODEX WAS FOUND: A NARRATIVE OF TWO VISITS TO SINAI: FROM MRS LEWIS'S JOURNALS, 1892-1893—published here in a new one-volume edition—were originally published in the late 1890's, to great acclaim. They are not only interesting and witty travelogues, but they are also a superb record of the discovery of the Syriac palimpsest, and a narrative of the journeys and adventures surrounding that research. The text describes a very remarkable variant of the reported spoken word of Jesus Christ (Matthew xii: 36), which will be of interest to all Christians and scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Depth of the Storm's Shadow, Only Truth Can Light Her Way Having escaped Egypt with the other Hebrews during the Exodus, Shira is now living in freedom at the foot of Mt. Sinai, upon which rests the fiery glowing Cloud containing the shekinah glory of God. When the people disobey Yahweh and build a golden idol, the ensuing chaos gives Shira an unexpected opportunity to learn the arts of midwifery. Although her mother wishes for her to continue in the family weaving trade, Shira's gifts shine brightest when she assists with deliveries. In defiance of her mother, Shira pursues her heart's calling to become an apprentice midwife. When a delivery goes horribly wrong, Shira finds herself bound to a man who betrayed her, the caretaker of three young children, and the target of a vengeful woman whose husband was killed by Shira's people, the Levites. As contention between the Hebrew tribes and the foreigners fans the flames of another dangerous rebellion, Shira will come face-to-face with the heartbreak of her past that she has kept hidden for so long. How can she let go of all that has defined her to accept the love she's denied herself and embrace who she truly is?

Book excerpt: Experience the presence of God like Moses did on Mount Sinai. God is very close. His voice is clearer than you think. People search for who they are and why they are here. We hunger for God's voice, but don't know how to hear Him. We are willing to worship at a distance, but are we willing to ascend to His presence? Through Christ, the mountain has come to us. Jon Huntzinger traces the biblical and theological thread of God's encounter with His people at Mt. Sinai. Sinai is the place where God speaks His Word and reveals His ways. It's in fire and thunder, a still small voice, and a gentle wind. Sinai will forever change you. God has come down-are we willing to go up?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1880's dissension arose among the Muslim and Christian inhabitants of al-Karak, east of the Dead Sea. Up to that time the believers of both religions had lived peacefully together in the city. Problems arose and the Christians decicded to move. They were allowed to settle at Madaba. The government gave permission to build churches, but exclusively on those spots where churches had existed in Antiquity. The immigrants removed the debris from still partially visible foundation walls of the ancient churches. During this work they discovered in 1884 a marvelous mosaic map. It had been part of the floor of a large cathedral. The surviving fragments were roughly repaired and incorporated in the floor of the new St. George's church. It took nearly a hundred years and many admirers to have the map finally restored. This book is an introductory guide and can be a help to different kinds of people, such as visitors, students, and professors teaching first level archaeology, bible, and Umwelt. Numbers on the sketch included in the guide, refer the reader to appropriate information in the booklet. A colour reproduction of the map and a black/white sketch is included.
