A world-renowned master penman and calligrapher to queens and presidents, his script is perfection. So perfect that someone wants him out of the way. When Jamie stops by Ralph's house to deliver the 24K gold fountain pen nib he ordered, she finds him slumped over his drafting table, freshly dead. It takes her good friend with the bedroom eyes, Ridge Calhoun, Cedar Valley's chief of police and hottest bachelor, to determine what killed Ralph. And the cause of death is almost unbelievable. Now the question is - who killed Ralph? And how did they do it? Ralph was well loved and respected in the lettering community. So Jamie thought. Until she finds herself embroiled in a world full of jealousy, secrets, revenge, unrequited love, and greed. Even some of Ralph's powerful and wealthy clients have motives for wanting him dead. And it isn't because they can't pay. As Jamie sifts through the clues, consuming copious amounts of coffee, she enlists the help of her rival hand letterer, Hot Hugh. With his sexy British accent and tight black T-shirts, it's hard not to be distracted by him. Now the only question is whether Jamie can find the killer in the nib of time. Before they still her pen for good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verna J. Kirkness grew up on the Fisher River Indian reserve in Manitoba. Her childhood dream to be a teacher set her on a lifelong journey in education as a teacher, counsellor, consultant, and professor. Her simple quest to teach "in a Native way" revolutionized Canadian education policy and practice. Kirkness broke new ground at every turn. As the first cross-cultural consultant for the Manitoba Department of Education Curriculum Branch she made Cree and Ojibway the languages of instruction in several Manitoba schools. In the early 1970s she became the first Education Director for the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs) and then Education Director for the National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations). She played a pivotal role in developing the education sections of Wahbung: Our Tomorrows, which transformed Manitoba education, and the landmark 1972 national policy of Indian Control of Indian Education. These two major works have shaped First Nations education in Canada for more than 40 years. In the 1980s she became an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia where she was appointed Director of the Native Teacher Education Program, founded the Ts’‘Kel Graduate Program, and was a driving force behind the creation of the First Nations House of Learning. Honoured by community and country, Kirkness is a visionary who has inspired, and been inspired by, generations of students. Like a long conversation between friends, Creating Space reveals the challenges and misgivings, the burning questions, the successes and failures that have shaped the life of this extraordinary woman and the history of Aboriginal education in Canada.

Book excerpt: Casey is a disheartened 30-something, struggling to find herself in the shadow of an unhealthy relationship with She Who Must Not Be Named. Danny is a long-time lad, terrified of commitment and prone to making a run for it when responsibility calls. Ari is the 12-year-old son of absent father Danny - and a good example of said responsibility. Alice is a bright pink 1970s ice cream van recently converted to a mobile home for three disaffected travellers seeking to find themselves in a spur of the moment six-week journey across Europe and Asia. Casey Jones is unfulfilled. Her charity job depresses her, her relationship with her adoptive and religious parents confuses her, and she has repeated nightmares about her ex, She Who Must Not Be Named. In a moment of sudden clarity she chucks in her job, contacts her old schoolfriend, Danny, and they plan a pilgrimage of sorts to find some real meaning in their lives. What she didn't plan for, however, was an extra passenger in the shape of Danny's 12-year-old son, Ari. Sullen and resentful about his mother's battle with breast cancer, and his recently re-acquainted father, Ari doesn't make the best travelling companion for child-cautious Casey. The three of them are thrown together, alongside bags of oranges and sacks of potatoes, for an intense rollercoaster ride through Europe and Asia's most beautiful and dangerous places, in an ice cream van called Alice, allowing the history and culture they encounter to change the way they see the world, and each other.

Updated with a new foreword outlining the critical issues that have arisen since the original publication and with time lines presenting the landmark events in the legislative arena, low vision, education, and orientation and mobility, this classic work has never been more relevant.
