Book excerpt: A single mode microwave heating device which operates at 2.45 GHz was modified to simultaneously heat and characterize ceramic materials. The equivalent circuit derived by Marcuvitz 9 to model the ceramic rod in the waveguide was used in the formulation. Three crystal detectors on the impedance analyzer were used as a reflectometer to measure the reflection coefficient of the load, so that transmission line measurements can be automated. The measured reflection coefficient at different temperature is a function of the dielectric constant and loss tangent of the ceramic material. The Newton-Raphson method was successfully used to solve a nonlinear complex equation. By using this system, a 94% alumina rod was heated and characterized and experimental results are presented.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the dielectric properties of metal-oxide ceramics at microwave frequencies. It also demonstrates for the first time that a theory of harmonic phonon coupling can effectively predict the complex permittivity of metal oxides as a function of temperature and frequency. Dielectric ceramics are an important class of materials for radio-frequency, microwave and emergent terahertz technologies. Their key property is complex permittivity, the real part of which permits the miniaturisation of devices and the imaginary part of which is responsible for the absorption of electromagnetic energy. Absorption limits the practical performance of many microwave devices such as filters, oscillators, passive circuits and antennas. Complex permittivity as a function of temperature for low-loss dielectrics is determined by measuring the resonant frequency of dielectric resonators and using the radial mode matching technique to extract the dielectric properties. There have been only a handful of publications on the theory of dielectric loss, and their predictions have often been unfortunately unsatisfactory when compared to measurements of real crystals, sometimes differing by whole orders of magnitude. The main reason for this is the lack of accurate data for a harmonic coupling coefficient and phonon eigenfrequencies at arbitrary q vectors in the Brillouin zone. Here, a quantum field theory of losses in dielectrics is applied, using results from density functional perturbation theory, to predict from first principles the complex permittivity of metal oxides as functions of frequency and temperature.

Book excerpt: The program undertaken was designed to determine the applicability of dielectric heating to the drying of ceramic components fabricated by wet processing techniques. The general characteristics of dielectric drying were studied along with the specific moisture removal characteristics for a typical wet-processed ceramic composition (50% clay, 25% flint, 25% feldspar). The results obtained in this investigation showed that rapid drying rates for ceramics are possible with the dielectric heating method. Wet ceramic components can be heated and dried uniformly in the electric field without the development of severe temperature and moisture gradients which might lead to cracking and/or warping of the components. Although drying rates were found to be extremely high, they are limited by the rupture strength of the material, i.e., its ability to withstand the stresses developed by the pressure of the escaping water vapor. Dielectric drying holds interesting possibilities for drying high-cost ceramic components or component systems which are difficult to process by other techniques. (Author).
