Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search of Western Movie Sites is a compilation of 64 articles written for the bi-monthly newsletter Western Clippings by Carlo Gaberscek and Kenny Stier. They are profoundly convinced of the fundamental importance of landscapes and natural exteriors in westerns. These articles are listed regionally, starting with the Southwestern states (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada), progressing to California, the Northwest, Midwest, and Southern states, followed by Canada, and finishing with Mexico. They focus on the making of both A and B-westerns in a single state or a specific area of a state, and contain selected filmographies and detailed information on the locations. They envision a vast atlas of western cinema, a map of both real and imagined places constructed by Hollywood. This book, which includes over 200 stills and photos taken on location, is a guide to thousands of western film locations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western films have often been tributes to place and setting, with the magnificent backdrops mirroring the wildness of the narratives. As the splendid outdoor scenery of Westerns could not be found on a studio back lot or on a Hollywood sound stage, the movies have been filmed in the wide open spaces of the American West and beyond. This book chronicles the history of filming Westerns on location, from shooting on the East Coast in the early 1900s; through the use of locations in Utah, Arizona, and California in the 1940s and 1950s; and filming Westerns in Mexico, Spain, and other parts of the world in the 1960s. Also studied is the relationship between the filming location timeline and the evolving motion picture industry of the twentieth century, and how these factors shaped audience perceptions of the "Real West."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For well more than a century, Western films have embodied the United States' most fundamental doctrine--expansionism--and depicted, in a uniquely American way, the archetypal battle between good and evil. Westerns also depict a country defined and re-defined by complex crises. World War II transformed the genre as well as the nation's identity. Since then, Hollywood filmmakers have been fighting America's ideological wars onscreen by translating modern-day politics into the timeless mythology of the Old West. This book surveys the most iconic and influential Westerns, examines Hollywood stars and their political stripes and reveals the familiar Western tropes--which became elements in popular action, science fiction and horror films. This then sets the stage for the Western revival of the 1990s and a period of reinvention in the 21st century. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Early dudes were typically wealthy and stayed for a long time, some for so long that one ranch had a school for its guests' children. Dude ranches were built around unspoiled country and offered spectacular views, "healthy" weather, and the chance to experience the cowboy life. Hollywood filmmakers came and, with them, some of the biggest figures of their time. Among those who were guests at dude ranches were John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Dean Martin, Tom Hanks, Walt Disney, and US presidents.

This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not Thinkin'... Just Rememberin'... is a tour de force. This manuscript is very thorough and exhaustively researched. The sheer size of the manuscript might seem intimidating, but what else should one expect when The Alamo and John Wayne are the subjects? Of course, The Alamo is no ordinary movie, so the telling of the making of the movie is no small feat. Mr. Farkis is an adept writer. He knows his subject extremely well. His knowledge is intensive and extensive. It's quite easy to tell that, while he is a scholar, he is also a fan of both The Alamo and John Wayne. He does a great job of keeping the retelling of this information entertaining and interesting. The story of the making of the Alamo is told chronologically. This is the best way to tell the story because this allows for several other sub-stories to be told while the main story is unfolding. The tone and writing style is very approachable and open. It works well for this manuscript. There are many lighthearted moments that help anchor the overall manuscript, and they serve as counterpoints to the weightier discussions about politics, disagreements, and money issues that surrounded John Wayne's ambitious endeavor.
