Book excerpt: This unique collection of A. W. Tozer's greatest works includes: Paths to Power_x000D_ The Pursuit of God _x000D_ The Divine Conquest _x000D_ How to be Filled with the Holy Spirit _x000D_ The Root of the Righteous _x000D_ The Knowledge of the Holy _x000D_ "The Pursuit of God" is an inspirational guide for Christians seeking to get closer to God. The author identifies one of the major problems of the Christian Church. He suggests that the Church is making a new type of Christian who understands the Christian doctrine better than ever throughout the history, but still fails to understand what it really means to be a follower of Christ. Having identified the problem, Tozer offers a beautiful solution that is more practical and mystical than theological. He encourages the Christian to take the seeking of God and make it the foundation upon which their life is built. Being a mystic, he focuses on experience, feeling and hearing God's voice as important to faith._x000D_ "The Divine Conquest" was written as a sequel to "The Pursuit of God" with the aim of assuring the believers that if they want to know the power of Christ, they must be invaded by God.

Students practice brush writing as they progress from tracing to copying to free-hand writing. Model characters are marked to indicate meaning and stroke order, and well-known model phrases are shown in various script types, allowing students to practice different calligraphic styles. Beginners will find the author’s advice on how to avoid common pitfalls in writing brush strokes invaluable. Chinese Writing and Calligraphy will be welcomed by both students and instructors in need of an accessible text on learning the fundamentals of the art of writing Chinese characters.

Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated volume provides an in-depth look at some of the key works in the Wan-go H. C. Weng Collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy. Weng Tonghe (1830-1904), who gathered the greater part of the collection, was a preeminent statesman and scholar of late Qing-dynasty China, and the masterworks he collected reflect the refined taste of the scholars of his time. Weng's great-greatgrandson Wan-go H. C. Weng--the collection's current owner-- brought it to the United States for safekeeping in 1948. The fifty-one works reproduced in this catalogue, on exhibit at the Huntington in spring 2009, range from the twelfth century to the twentieth, and represent such renowned artists as Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Dong Qichang, Wang Jian, Wang Hui, Wang Yuanqi, and other important painters and calligraphers. The exhibition is based on an exhibit organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2007.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive and very detailed insight into Chinese Contemporary Geography in English. It documents the geographical issues associated with China's rapid growth. Since initiating the reforms and open policy, China has achieved tremendous success. China's rapid growth is now a driving force in the global economy and is achieving unprecedented rates of poverty reduction. However, China also faces a number of sustainability and emerging challenges associated with rapid growth such as growing regional disparities in terms of per capita income and social-economic development, sustainable resource development, and issues related to regional and global economic integration. In addition, rapid economic growth has also brought about major challenges such as resource shortages, ecological and environmental destruction, land degradation and frequent disasters. This book presents the authors’ reflections. This lavishly illustrated book covers physical geography, history, and economic and political systems of the world's most populous country. The major focus is on geographical issues in China's contemporary development: agriculture, population, urbanization, resource and energy, and environment. The lead author of the book has taught relevant courses in China for three decades, and authored and edited multiple textbooks for Chinese students. This book will appeal to undergraduate students of geography and related disciplines with a regional focus on China and to the general reader who wants to learn different geographical aspects of modern China with little academic background in geography.

Book excerpt: The Pleasures of the Imagination examines the birth and development of English "high culture" in the eighteenth century. It charts the growth of a literary and artistic world fostered by publishers, theatrical and musical impresarios, picture dealers and auctioneers, and presented to th public in coffee-houses, concert halls, libraries, theatres and pleasure gardens. In 1660, there were few professional authors, musicians and painters, no public concert series, galleries, newspaper critics or reviews. By the dawn of the nineteenth century they were all aprt of the cultural life of the nation. John Brewer's enthralling book explains how this happened and recreates the world in which the great works of English eighteenth-century art were made. Its purpose is to show how literature, painting, music and the theatre were communicated to a public increasingly avid for them. It explores the alleys and garrets of Grub Street, rummages the shelves of bookshops and libraries, peers through printsellers' shop windows and into artists' studios, and slips behind the scenes at Drury Lane and Covent Garden. It takes us out of Gay and Boswell's London to visit the debating clubs, poetry circles, ballrooms, concert halls, music festivals, theatres and assemblies that made the culture of English provincial towns, and shows us how the national landscape became one of Britain's greatest cultural treasures. It reveals to us a picture of English artistic and literary life in the eighteenth century less familiar, but more suprising, more various and more convincing than any we have seen before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the writings of Nicola Vicentino (1555) and Gioseffo Zarlino (1558) is found, for the first time, a systematic means of explaining music's expressive power based upon the specific melodic and harmonic intervals from which it is constructed. This "theory of interval affect" originates not with these theorists, however, but with their teacher, influential Venetian composer Adrian Willaert (1490-1562). Because Willaert left no theoretical writings of his own, Timothy McKinney uses Willaert's music to reconstruct his innovative theories concerning how music might communicate extramusical ideas. For Willaert, the appellations "major" and "minor" no longer signified merely the larger and smaller of a pair of like-numbered intervals; rather, they became categories of sonic character, the members of which are related by a shared sounding property of "majorness" or "minorness" that could be manipulated for expressive purposes. This book engages with the madrigals of Willaert's landmark Musica nova collection and demonstrates that they articulate a theory of musical affect more complex and forward-looking than recognized currently. The book also traces the origins of one of the most widespread musical associations in Western culture: the notion that major intervals, chords and scales are suitable for the expression of happy affections, and minor for sad ones. McKinney concludes by discussing the influence of Willaert's theory on the madrigals of composers such as Vicentino, Zarlino, Cipriano de Rore, Girolamo Parabosco, Perissone Cambio, Francesco dalla Viola, and Baldassare Donato, and describes the eventual transformation of the theory of interval affect from the Renaissance view based upon individual intervals measured from the bass, to the Baroque view based upon invertible triadic entities.
