Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the prison industrial complex existed without the institutional middleman? What if indebtedness was a crime? What if all crimes could result in enslavement? In My Moonlit Mornings is a dynamic piece of realistic fiction, written in a dystopian alternate America that has permanently legalized involuntary servitude.John Harrison, president of the newly named United Confederacy of America, has revised the constitution to permit slavery in a profitable new form referred to as a Blacktract: the product of an authoritarian hierarchy system installed in the forefront of America's Bill of Rights. Through his influential manifesto, The Superior Stratagem, John Harrison and his son have persuaded the American people with alternative facts and blunt charisma to welcome involuntary servitude by abolishing prisons and effectively subjugating criminals and the impoverished. The two most important laws in the Harrisonian revised Constitution, written entirely by President John Harrison himself, proceed as follows:Indebtedness, lasting a period of six months or more, is a crime. All crimes are punishable by Blacktract at the discretion of the victim and approval of the United Confederacy of America.Blacktracts are not involuntary labor or forced upon anyone, until they sign the solid line at the bottom. Once the paper is wetted, all of the signers' desires dissipate to be replaced by their proprietor's desires, all fruits of their labor are inherited by the proprietor, and all of their basic human needs must be filled by that same master. Though, and I must add this, for one to not sign a Blacktract is death. These laws, coupled with preexisting tendencies for poor people, people of color, immigrants, and women to fall into debt or commit a crime create a tense world of profitable subjugation that is similar to our own world if it were under a magnifying glass.Malik White, a stubborn runaway Blacktractee, finally escapes his content life as a mechanic under an abusive master in a Mississippi auto shop and travels to New York City after hearing about its unique opposition to the Confederate American government. There, he finds Keri Carter, the compassionate leader of the Railroad to Equal Life, or REL: the last enemy to the United Confederacy, domestic or international. Keri then introduces Malik to her overly violent, super-assassin sister, Nina, who has a big surprise of her own waiting at home for Keri.

But it isn't the first time the fiery artist has gone too far for payback; a secret possession she carries with her could shatter her ex-boyfriend's future. Reede Aldredge has secrets, too, including a desire to get closer to the beauty who is turning his dark world upside-down. Under the night skies, their masquerade is magic-but will it turn to stardust by the light of day?

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Sophie’s Choice: three novellas of a young writer’s journey to adulthood. In Love Day, twenty-year-old Paul Whitehurst is a Marine lieutenant during World War II, waiting to land on Okinawa, wrestling with anxiety and memories of his boyhood in Virginia. In Shadrach, ten-year-old Paul witnesses his neighbors as they welcome a guest: a ninety-nine-year-old former slave who has walked nine hundred miles from Alabama so that he may die on the land of his childhood owner. And in A Tidewater Morning, Paul is thirteen and struggling to deal with his mother’s impending death from cancer. Together in one volume, each of these affecting semiautobiographical novellas from the author of such literary classics as the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Confessions of Nat Turner and the memoir Darkness Visible, weaves together the transformative experiences of Whitehurst’s early life with William Styron’s signature deep historical insight, underscoring how the significance of the past informs the present. As the Los Angeles Times notes, it is “one of Styron’s finest works. . . . The beauty and humanity of the Southern tradition are evoked vividly.” This ebook features a new illustrated biography of William Styron, including original letters, rare photos, and never-before-seen documents from the Styron family and the Duke University Archives.

[Kaye's] kaleidoscopic story of a long-lost innocence just before and after World War I helps to explain Kaye's idealization of the British Raj and her love for Kipling's verse." - Publishers Weekly

His father is a prominent Methodist preacher from a successful and influential Creole family -"the Howard's." the family motto is, "work, save, educate." His mother operates a no-name school for children who cannot attend regular school during the day. His paternal grandmother, Grandma Howard, chiefly commands the Howard family business interests. She is extremely color conscious, preferring the lighter hue and Creole heritage. In his pre-teen years, Daniel Howard is often in trouble for being sighted on Bourbon or Basin Streets tap dancing and yearning to play the piano in the blues clubs and juke joints. Through his lens the reader is introduced to his view of New Orleans to include, the lively scenes in the French Quarters; Mardi Gras; Voodoo; Congo Square; and, life in a vibrant port city among many other experiences. His maternal grandmother, "Nana", heads the maternal side of his family. Nana is a widow and illiterate and resides in a tin roofed former slave cabin outside of New Orleans. She is an extremely religious woman and ekes out a meager living as a maid. She is also the local midwife, and tends to the sick with herb potions. She still grieves that her son, Lester, was dragged from her cabin one dark night and lynched. After graduating from college, he is recruited to teach in a small-impoverished town in the Mississippi Delta where despite his hopes and desire to make a difference, hardships and humiliations await him and his new bride, Miss Emma.

I know him now as a major force pushing this scene in all directions. He has gone so far deep inside that he has become exactly what he writes about. He will forget to write one chapter of this book and that is the one about himself." -Karsh Kale, tabla player/DJ/producer "Derek Beres is a modern-day shaman. He knows new hybrids of electronic and non-Western music deliver the same ecstatic release as ancient tribal rituals of so-called primitive societies, and that the implications go far beyond an ambient groove. For Beres, the fusion of technology and ritual, the reconciliation of mind, body and spirit that electronic world music represents, is not just the cutting edge of modern entertainment but the early stages of a numinous revolution in American culture. In Global Beat Fusion he explains why music is the new religion, and how, in one sense or another, we are all destined to become believers." -Guy Garcia, author of The New Mainstream: How the Multicultural Consumer is Transforming American Business For exclusive interviews, pictures, events artist info and more visit www.globalbeatfusion.com Cover artwork by Craig Anthony Miller www.craiganthonymiller.com Outside the Box Publishing www.otbpublishing.com

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author begins the Graham Clan series with “a swashbuckling tale of warring factions in 12th-century Scotland” (Publishers Weekly). During a bloody borderland skirmish, thirteen-year-old Waryk de Graham wields his slain father’s sword and vanquishes the Norman enemy. Ten years later, with King Henry I dead and the English succession in chaos, Waryk, the newly knighted Laird Lion, is once again fighting for his Scottish homeland—this time against Normans and Vikings alike. But it is for the heart of one extraordinary woman that the great warrior will wage his fiercest battle. The daughter of a Gaelic noblewoman and a Viking warlord, proud, independent Lady Mellyora MacAdin of Blue Isle is a formidable swordswoman who yields to no man. When Scotland’s King David decrees that she marry the war-scarred knight Waryk in order to keep the Viking island secure for his kingdom, she defiantly rebels. Come the Morning is the first novel in Heather Graham’s medieval Scottish series that introduces the Graham clan, Gaelic-speaking Lowlanders who fight with their Highland brethren for the country they love. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Heather Graham, including rare photos from the author’s personal collection. Come the Morning is the 1st book in the Graham Clan series, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: Here was Once the Sea features poetry, fiction, and nonfiction guest edited by Rina Garcia Chua, Esther Vincent Xueming, and Ann Ang. While many of these works are comprised mostly of anglophone texts, which reflects the aspirations of regional writers to speak across borders and to the globe at large, several native languages appear on these pages. Here, Southeast Asia refers to the constituent nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), namely, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as their associated diasporas. The writers and the peoples of the region live and remember more profoundly than we know. Their work explores the ecological across a multiscalar spectrum, featuring both geological landscapes and visceral botanical or animal entanglements, inheriting histories and spiritualities that defy and disrupt modern epistemologies. Together they represent a chorus of offerings, first and foremost to the land and the sea; and secondly to you, our readers, as an invitation to attend to the urgencies and travails of our homes. These are the stories we share and the stories we carry in our pasiking (basket) as we follow movements towards our destinies. These are the stories that sing of hope—for ourselves and for our world; ones that we whisper silently to ourselves as we touch our lips to the familiar earth and wait for the incoming monsoon rain to fall gently on our backs, our fields, our rivers.
