Book excerpt: Excerpt from In London's Heart IT Was eight o'clock in the evening, and a thin haze which had hung over London through the October afternoon had lifted, and the night was bright and exhilarating. The working day was over. The shop assistants, glad to escape from their monotonous toil, were pouring into the streets. Streams of pleasure seekers were walking toward the great centre of theatrical entertainment, and smart little broughams, 'with ladies and gentlemen in evening dress, were dash ing along as fast as the plague of omnibuses would allow them. Outside one of the most fashionable restaurants in Piccadilly, the big foreigner in uniform who has taken the place of the English commissionaire was preparing to receive company. He had been lolling in an easy attitude against the door-post, reading a pink extra special until the clock struck eight, but now he had begun to assume an important, not to say dictatorial, attitude toward the crawling hansoms and four-wheel ers which seemed to him to be blocking the way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London's Heart, Vol. 2 of 3 The Captain of the Fancy, coming out of the streets where there was little light, into a small room where there was less, could see nothing of the occupants but shadowy outlines, and had to take it for granted that he had brought himself to anchor in a friendly port. He appeared to have no doubt upon the point; but then it belonged to his profession to be as confident in danger as in safety, and to be able to steer amidst rocks with a bold heart. So, like a true seaman, he kept his own counsel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Pageantry and the keeping of festivals, having nearly vanished from London life, no longer inspire our poets. The notion of hailing and celebrating London on high occasions seems alien to modern ideas. One may regret this one may regret that the opportunities of last year were not taken, and that of the many poets who apostrophised the Empire and England a few did not glorify London, the heart of both. Book excerpt: Julian Leclerc, a handsome and talented young barrister, has been found dead of an apparent overdose of sleeping pills. The verdict is accidental death, but his fiancee, Ann Hewitt, suspects there's something more to the story. As the grieving woman recounts the details of Julian's tragic end to psychiatrist Dr. Tony Page, he listens with acute interest - but not for the reason she thinks. Years earlier, he and Julian had been lovers, and now, disturbed by the circumstances of his friend's demise, Tony sets out to uncover the truth. His quest will take him from the parties and pubs of the gay underworld of 1950s London to Scotland Yard and the House of Commons as he uses his shrewd and penetrating insight to find who or what was responsible for Julian's death. But he may discover more than he bargained for - about Julian, and himself.

They found themselves in demand, treated with respect, better remunerated, and, in return, expected to deliver a higher grade of commodity. One phase of this new quest for material was the attempt to enlist known authors in the work. But because a man had written a score of novels was no guarantee that he could write a good scenario. Quite to the contrary, it was quickly discovered that the surest guarantee of failure was a previous record of success in novel -writing. I was fresh from New England, and had left Boston, my native city, seventeen days before, em barking at New York on the Anchor liner Alsatia three days later; disembarking at Tilbury after a turbulent voyage that lasted two weeks to the hour. What was left of me passed from the Fen church Street Station into Leadenhall Street, the least of three passengers in a four-wheeled cab. Through the cab windows, and the ghost of fog which simmered over gas lamps, flashed glimpses of the city, splashes Of light on the pavements illumin ated windows bound in brass, cumbrous drays and 'busses, and great grey horses, and glistening pubs. The air was heavy with smoke. I heard the tramp of thousands and thousands of persons, all home ward bound, and all wearing top hats. And, Of all names, there at the right on a clothier's sign, the enamelled legend: Dombey and Son! My head was packed with Dickens, and in a pocket was a linen-backed map. He said: you are mine - and here in the face of heaven, do_i pledge myself wholly and solely unto you Take this ring, my well-beloved: it has the initial of my Christian name graven on the stone. Keep it, Eliza, as an earnest of those vows which I so solemnly, sacredly plight you now. Almost blinded by her tears, the lovely being placed the ring in her bosom; and drawing off one from her own fair finger, she murmured in accents that were broken and scarcely audible, yet filled with the soft plain'tive' harmony of her dulcet voice, And you, dearest Bertram, take this! It bears also the initial of my name: I will not tell you that I shall remain constant: my own heart gives me that assurance, - and you, who can read the secrets of that heart, know that it is en tirely and inseparably thine I Bertram took the ring - pressed it to his lips and placed it upon his finger. Then the'ffinoment for parting came. Oh! Who can depict the anguish the excruciation of feeling which marked that moment? The calmness which had succeeded the first ebullition of despair, and which in itself was only' comparative, vanished alto gether. Bertrand strained his adored Eliza in convulsive violence to his breast: they both felt as if the tenderest chords of their hearts were being rudely torn asunder. They separated in a state bordering upon frenzy: Bertram rushed from the house - while the young maiden, sinking upon a seat, felt as if she and happiness had shaken hands for ever. Captain Lacey returned home about a quarter of an hour afterwards, and when the agonizing ih tentness of Eliza's affliction had somewhat passed away - or at least was mitigated by the hopes which she busied herself to conjure up. For, Oh! It was so necessary for that young heart to sustain itself with hope The Captain was thunderstruck when his daughter informed him of what had occurred. He - good, credulous, but self-willed man - had arranged everything so comfortably in his own mind. Bertrand would no doubt stay another year longer at the University - he would then be well provided for by his family - and his marriage with Eliza would at once take place as a matter of course. Such was the Captain's fore shadowing: but the dream was suddenly dispelled - and with the destruction of his delusions, came worldly-minded reflections, thickly pouring in. His eyes were now opened to the fatal error he had committed: he ought to have inquired at the outset whether in due time Bertram Vivian would be in a position to settle in marriage. He now comprehended that so far from anything of the sort, the young man had to enter on the career of life, and, with certain chances given him, carve them out into substantial shape as best he could. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old London Bridge: A Romance of the Sixteenth Century Business of his father-in-law, Sir William Hewett, and was soon recognised as one of the wealthiest English merchants. His foreign trade was immense. He became Governor of the Turkey Company, which was afterwards incorporated under the style of Merchants of the Levant' trading to Turkey and Venice, a powerful body that offered to defray the ambassadorial expenses to the Porte in return for their royal charter. He owned lands in several parts of the country, the largest in Yorkshire, although he did not reside there on account of the distance from the capital. He was Sheriff of London in I 575 and Lord Mayor in I 583, when, in accordance with custom, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. He was elected to Parlia ment for the City in 1586. His son, Sir Hewett Osborne, was father of Sir Edward Osborne, Baronet, of Kniveton, in Yorkshire, and the son of the last mentioned was the famous politician of the Restoration and the Revolution, Sir Thomas Osborne, first Duke of Leeds, but most familiarly remembered in history as the Earl of Danby. A graphic picture of that sagacious statesman, at the time of the fictitious Popish Plot and the terrible judicial murders instigated by Titus Oates, is drawn by Emma Robinson in Whitefriars.
