This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encouraging a conversation among scholars working with questions of transnationalism from the perspective of gender and race, this book explores the intersectionality between these two forms of oppression and their relation to transnational migration. How do sexism and racism articulate the experience of transnational migrants? What is the complex relationship between minorities and migrants in terms of gender and racial discrimination? What are the empirical and theoretical insights gained by an analysis that emphasizes the ‘intersectionality’ between gender and race? What empirical agenda can be developed out of these questions? Bringing a transnational lens to studies of migration from an intersectional perspective, the contributors focus on how power geometries, articulated through sexisms and racisms, are experienced in relation to a migration and/or minority context. They also challenge the rather fixed notions of what constitutes an intersectional approach to the study of oppressions in social interactions. Finally, the book’s inter- and multi-disciplinary range exhibits a variety of methodological ‘takes’ on the issue of transnational intersectionalities in migration and minority context. Taken together, the volume adds theoretical, empirical and historical insight to ethnic, racial, gender and migration studies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Sketches: With a Narrative of a Year's Residence Among the Indian Tribes of the Rocky Mountains Rocky Mountains? This is one of the singular facts which these pages present to us. They abound in others not less singular and interesting. Many of these Indian nations actually thirst after the waters of life - sigh for the day when the real Long Gown is to appear among them, and even send messengers thousands of miles to hasten his coming. Such longing after God's holy truth, while it shames our colder piety, should also en ame every heart to pray fervently that laborers may be found for this vast vineyard and open every hand to aid the holy, self-devoted men, who, leaving home and friends and country, have buried themselves in these wilds with their beloved Indians, to live for them and God. One of their favourite plans at this moment is to introduce among them a taste for agriculture, with the means to pursue it. They believe it to be the speediest, perhaps the only way by which the Indians may be won from the wandering life they now [vii] in general lead and from the idle habits it engenders. To aid them in this philan thr0pic object is our sacred duty as men, as Americans, as Christians. It is at least one method of atonement for the countless wrongs which these unfortunate races have received from the whites. We should be grateful to have such an opportunity of doing good: let none suffer the occasion to pass unhonoured by some tribute to the noble cause some evidence of their love for God, their country and their fellow man.
