Realist ontologies usually assume so: according to them, the world consists of objects, these have properties and enter into relations with each other, more or less as we are accustomed to think of them. Against this view, Rein Raud develops a radical process ontology that does not credit any vantage point, any scale or speed of being, any range of cognitive faculties with the privilege to judge how the world ‘really’ is. In his view, what we think of as objects are recast as fields of constitutive tensions, cross-sections of processes, never in complete balance but always striving for it and always reconfiguring themselves accordingly. The human self is also understood as a fluctuating field, not limited to the mind but distributed all over the body and reaching out into its environment, with different constituents of the process constantly vying for control. The need for such a process philosophy has often been voiced, but rarely has there been an effort to develop it in a systematic and rigourous manner that leads to original accounts of identity, continuity, time, change, causality, agency and other topics. Throughout his new book, Raud engages with an unusually broad range of philosophical schools and debates, from New Materialism and Object-Oriented Ontology to both phenomenological and analytical philosophy of mind, from feminist philosophy of science to neurophilosophy and social ontology. Modern Western medicine strives for certainty by monitoring symptoms, modeling risk, and controlling knowledge. In the 1990s, evidence-based medicine became coin of the realm for managing uncertainty. This turn toward evidence-based medicine has proved highly contentious, however. Considerable scholarship has emerged exploring the complex nature of evidence-based medical decision making. Many scholars have sought to account for affect, logic, intuition, persuasion, and experiential knowledge in medicine. But what of the pre-deliberative practices that render the grounds upon which decisions are made? What of the agentic capacity of evidence itself? Inspired by these questions, in Bodies in Flux: Scientific Methods for Negotiating Uncertainty, technical communication scholar Christa Teston explores the discursive and material methods by which medical evidence is designed and the pre-deliberative, rhetorical design work that affords grounds upon which uncertainty is identified and managed when medical decisions are made. She explores specific sites (pathology laboratories and FDA drug hearings) and methodological practices (statistical analysis and genetic sequencing) of medical decision making to reveal the real-time assemblages of people, bodies, practices, and objects that create evidences that are later used to make decisions about treatment. In doing so she reveals the complexity of this work and demonstrates ways in which medical evidence is not definitively objective. Rather than viewing construction of certainty as an exclusively human enterprise, she demonstrates how humans and nonhuman agents co-construct certainty in real-world medical settings where life-and-death decisions must be made.

Zumbi dos Palmares, the leader of a runaway slave community in the seventeenth century, is shown not as an anti-Brazilian rebel but as a symbol of Black consciousness and anti-colonial resistance. Xica da Silva, an eighteenth-century mixed-race enslaved woman who "married" her master and has been seen as a licentious mulatta, questions gendered stereotypes of so-called racial democracy. Manuel Querino, whose ethnographic studies have been ignored and virtually unknown for much of the twentieth century, is put on par with more widely known African American trailblazers such as W. E. B. Du Bois. Niyi Afolabi draws out the intermingling influences of Yoruba and Classical Greek mythologies in Brazilian representations of the carnivalesque Black Orpheus, while his analysis of City of God focuses on the growing centrality of the ghetto, or favela, as a theme and producer of culture in the early twenty-first-century Brazilian urban scene. Ultimately, Afolabi argues, the identities of these figures are not fixed, but rather inhabit a fluid terrain of ideological and political struggle, challenging the idealistic notion that racial hybridity has eliminated racial discrimination in Brazil.
