Book excerpt: Lockheed and Boeing each made a series of tests in aircraft fuel tank simulators to provide an improved understanding of the flowability and pumpability of jet fuels at or below their freezing point where waxy components separate. Each simulator represented a section of an aircraft wing fuel tank. Tests simulated the low temperature cruise environment associated with long duration flights under extreme, high-altitude conditions. Holdup, the fraction of unavailable fuel remaining in the tank after attempted fuel withdrawal, was used to characterize pumpability after low temperature exposure. The test fuels were derived from widely differing crude sources and were selected to cover a range of freezing points. Two of the test fuels were common to the Boeing and Lockheed investigations in order to assess variability due to simulator construction. One fuel in the Lockheed program contained a flow improver additive. In the Boeing program, one fuel was a blend of JP-5 and 9% marine diesel fuel. (Author).

Book excerpt: The low temperature performance of antimisting kerosene (AMK) in airframe fuel systems and in certain fuel system components was studied and compared to Jet A fuel. Water vapor ingested into fuel tanks during simulation of repeated descents through clouds and rain had little effect on AMK. AMK retained antimisting properties during exposure to severe environmental flight simulations. Jet pump and boost pump operation had no discernable effect on AMK flammability. Jet pump performance with AMK was adversely affected. Main fuel boost pumps required up to 18 percent more power with AMK that with Jet A, and suction feed performance was lower with ambient and -20 deg C, but better than Jet A and -40 deg C. Boost pump performance was not affected by gel formations produced at low temperatures by the vapor removal return flow shearing of AMK. Aerodynamic heating and cooling of AMK in the fuel tank was similar to Jet A.A high pressure pump and needle valve used to degrade the AMK was inadequate, resulting in filter bypass at low temperatures. Book excerpt: The reduction of the fire hazard of fuel is critical to improving survivability in impact-survivable aircraft accidents. Despite current fire prevention and mitigation approaches, fuel flammability can overwhelm post-crash fire scenarios. The Workshop on Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety was held November 19-20, 1996 to review the current state of development, technological needs, and promising technology for the future development of aviation fuels that are most resistant to ignition during a crash. This book contains a summary of workshop discussions and 11 presented papers in the areas of fuel and additive technologies, aircraft fuel system requirements, and the characterization of fuel fires.

Book excerpt: Hydrocarbon fuels tend to form deposits in the thermal environment associated with high mach number flight. The Advanced Aircraft Fuel System Simulator provides thermal stability data on fuels which are used to determine aircraft fuel system design criteria, operational limits of fuels, and to aid in the development of small-scale thermal stability test devices. Fuel AFFB-14-70, the seventh fuel in a series, was tested under cyclic and steady-state conditions. Steady-state manifold tests were run to determine the effect of dissolved oxygen on thermal stability. The results of tests using manifold tubes with widely different surface finishes are reported. Book excerpt: Summary: Skin and structural temperatures have been obtained on the X-1B and X-1E research airplanes under transient aerodynamic heating conditions at speeds up to Mach numbers near 2.0. Extensive temperature measurements were obtained throughout the X-1B airplane, and temperature distributions are shown on the nose cone, the wing, and the vertical tail. Temperatures for the X-1E wing leading edge and internal wing structure were compared with similar data for the X-1B. No critical skin and structural temperatures were obtained on the two airplanes over the range of these tests. Simplified calculations of the skin temperatures in the laminar-flow regions of the nose cone and the leading edges agreed favorably with the general trends in the measured data. The flat-plate skin-temperature calculations in the turbulent-flow regions agreed favorably with the measured data on the nose cone and at the midsemispan station of the wing but overestimated the vertical-tail skin temperatures and also the upper wing skin temperature near the wing tip. The relatively low values of the upper skin temperatures that were measured at the wing tip were believed to be caused by separated-flow effects in this region.

Book excerpt: At elevated temperatures, hydrocarbon jet fuels tend to form deposits which decrease heat exchanger efficiency and plug screens and filter elements. In order to quantify this tendency so that it may be predicted, it is necessary to obtain comparative test results on a simulated aircraft fuel system and small-scale test devices. In the report, the thermal stability of the second fuel (AFFB-9-67) tested in the Advanced Aircraft Fuel System Simulator is quantified in terms of the amount of deposit formed. The quantification of deposit formation is determined under cyclic conditions (mission profiles) and two types of steady state test conditions (steady state and steady state-varied flow). The difference between the two steady state tests is that the steady state test was performed at constant flow rate and heat input and the steady state-varied flow test contained intervals wherein a higher flow rate and no heat input were imposed. In addition to testing in the Simulator, fuel AFFB-9-67 was tested in the standard, gas, research, modified, and micro cokers; as well as other facilities. (Author).
