He’s out to prove her wrong… Silas Miller is going through life just doing what his Dad tells him to. What he’s best at—finding properties in poor neighborhoods to buy out, tear down, and make way for the rich to use. As a son in a billion-dollar ranch family, he sees nothing wrong with that. Until he meets Theodora Parker, that is. “Teddy” is a hard-scrabble, redheaded spitfire, helping run her adoptive daddy’s car repair shop. While she’s hard on the outside, she has a soft spot for the elderly and disadvantaged teens of her neighborhood. With a green thumb and a knack for nursing, she has a tender heart for taking care of those in need. But a rich cowboy wearing a suit, one who wants to buy her shop and take away all she holds dear, well she has no time for him when his car breaks down. That is until her family is in trouble, and Silas might be the only one who can help… Now Silas must decide if he will go against his family to do the right thing. Book excerpt: After a nomadic childhood, Charles Siringo signed on as a teenage cowboy for the noted Texas cattle king, Shanghai Pierce, and began a life that embraced all the hard work, excitement, and adventure readers today associate with the cowboy era. He "rid the Chisholm trail," driving 2,500 heads of cattle from Austin to Kansas; knew Tascosa—now a historic monument—when it was home to raucous saloons, red light districts, and a fair share of violence; and led a posse of cowboys in pursuit of Billy the Kid and his gang. First published in 1885, Siringo's chronicle of his life as a itchy-footed boy, cowhand, range detective, and adventurer was one the first classics about the Old West and helped to romanticize the West and its myth of the American cowboy. Will Rogers declared, "That was the Cowboy's Bible when I was growing up." For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DEBT: a 4-part novella series based on Cowboy, ex-soldier, Matt Stone, all in one book together! Matt Stone rode into Markleeville one hot dusk, with a wind at his back that promised summer thunder. He was tall and lean, with a narrow, clean-shaven face above the collar of his oilskin duster. His eyes were a hard pale blue, like chips of ice, and his black hair was long like an Apache's and held back with a strip of leather. The coat was open, revealing a buckskin vest and the pair of silver Colts at his hips. He rode a huge, sleek black horse with a bullet scar showing in white hairs across one flank. Its name was Lucky. That horse had carried him through Gettysburg alive, and then taken him west, where he'd spent three years wandering, trying to get the echoes of battle out of his head. Matt managed to escape death in Gettysburg and just when he begins to believe he has something good with Anne, destiny takes a shot and sends everything spinning out of control.

Book excerpt: An inside look at a cable titan and his industry John Malone, hailed as one of the great unsung heroes of our age by some and reviled by others as a ruthless robber baron, is revealed as a bit of both in Cable Cowboy. For more than twenty-five years, Malone has dominated the cable television industry, shaping the world of entertainment and communications, first with his cable company TCI and later with Liberty Media. Written with Malone's unprecedented cooperation, the engaging narrative brings this controversial capitalist and businessman to life. Cable Cowboy is at once a penetrating portrait of Malone's complex persona, and a captivating history of the cable TV industry. Told in a lively style with exclusive details, the book shows how an unassuming copper strand started as a backwoods antenna service and became the digital nervous system of the U.S., an evolution that gave U.S. consumers the fastest route to the Internet. Cable Cowboy reveals the forces that propelled this pioneer to such great heights, and captures the immovable conviction and quicksilver mind that have defined John Malone throughout his career.

Book excerpt: Cowboy, Cowboy, wherefore art thou Cowboy? A fake marriage between the daughter and son of two archenemies. What could possibly go wrong? Cloe Holiday is practical enough to realize she isn't as pretty and talented as her five sisters and she's content standing in their shadows and cheering them on. Her dreams are small--help children overcome the speech impediments she had to deal with as a child, get an engagement ring from her longtime boyfriend, and have her wedding in the big red barn on her family's Texas ranch. But even small dreams can blow up in your face. Instead of a ring, she gets the boot. And now her family is about to lose everything. Not just their ranch, but also their home and the beloved barn . . . unless Cloe is willing to enter into a wild scheme with the son of her father's archenemy. Rome Remington has always tried to be the responsible, obedient son. After his mama ran off, he helped his father make the Remington Ranch one of the most profitable ranches in Texas. But now he has an opportunity to buy the neighboring ranch and the idea of getting out from under his controlling father's thumb is too good to resist. There's only one problem. The ranch is owned by the Holidays’ ornery grandma who refuses to sell to just anyone—the man must be willing to pay off the family debt and convince one of her granddaughters to marry him. After his first disastrous marriage, Rome swore he'd never get married again . . . but what if this marriage is merely a business transaction? Now all he has to do is convince a Holiday sister. And what better sister than the practical Plain Jane? But as it turns out, there’s nothing plain about Cloe Holiday. Her inner strength, kind heart, and breathtaking kisses will soon have Rome scaling any garden wall to get to his cowgirl Juliet.

Book excerpt: When cowboys were workers and battled their bosses In the pantheon of American icons, the cowboy embodies the traits of “rugged individualism,” independent, solitary, and stoical. In reality, cowboys were grossly exploited and underpaid seasonal workers, who responded to the abuses of their employers in a series of militant strikes. Their resistance arose from the rise and demise of a “beef bonanza” that attracted international capital. Business interests approached the market with the expectation that it would have the same freedom to brutally impose its will as it had exercised on native peoples and the recently emancipated African Americans. These assumptions contributed to a series of bitter and violent “range wars,” which broke out from Texas to Montana and framed the appearance of labor conflicts in the region. These social tensions stirred a series of political insurgencies that became virtually endemic to the American West of the Gilded Age. Mark A. Lause explores the relationship between these neglected labor conflicts, the “range wars,” and the third-party movements. The Great Cowboy Strike subverts American mythology to reveal the class abuses and inequalities that have blinded a nation to its true history and nature
