Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like their namesake, the poems of In Cannon Cave are acoustic chambers, gourds in which experience resonates. Here is a voice singing to existence, longingly, caressingly, not to typify or capture it, but to give it dwell, the audible afterlife of language. These poems venture far beyond the comforts of romanticism to find a new compassion. When night comes, something speaks from that soft, fragrant wilderness. It says, the heart is not a door. But it opens. We feel in the dark for the hinge. The body, our great ally, knows what it's here for. from Five Doors Carole Glasser Langille does an extraordinary job of connecting the world outside her to the world inside her. -- Robert Coles Here is a book of adult pleasures, ocean and sunlight: the fond ache of children: eros regained. And beneath it all a stillness that is palpable, articulate. In her second book, Carole Glasser Langille speaks the ?language of praise in the dark.? We are all the richer for it. -- Dennis Lee NOMINATED for the 1997 Governor General's Award for Poetry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of Fly Girls shares the riveting story of an unsung World War II hero who saved countless American lives in the Philippines. When Florence Finch died at the age of 101, few of her Ithaca, NY neighbors knew that this unassuming Filipina native was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, whose courage and sacrifice were unsurpassed in the Pacific War against Japan. Long accustomed to keeping her secrets close in service of the Allies, she waited fifty years to reveal the story of those dramatic and harrowing days to her own children. Florence was an unlikely warrior. She relied on her own intelligence and fortitude to survive on her own from the age of seven, facing bigotry as a mixed-race mestiza with the dual heritage of her American serviceman father and Filipina mother. As the war drew ever closer to the Philippines, Florence fell in love with a dashing American naval intelligence agent, Charles "Bing" Smith. In the wake of Bing's sudden death in battle, Florence transformed from a mild-mannered young wife into a fervent resistance fighter. She conceived a bold plan to divert tons of precious fuel from the Japanese army, which was then sold on the black market to provide desperately needed medicine and food for hundreds of American POWs. In constant peril of arrest and execution, Florence fought to save others, even as the Japanese police closed in. With a wealth of original sources including taped interviews, personal journals, and unpublished memoirs, The Indomitable Florence Finch unfolds against the Bataan Death March, the fall of Corregidor, and the daily struggle to survive a brutal occupying force. Award-winning military historian and former Congressman Robert J. Mrazek brings to light this long-hidden American patriot. The Indomitable Florence Finch is the story of the transcendent bravery of a woman who belongs in America's pantheon of war heroes.

Book Synopsis Interpreting Sapiens’ Consciousness through Paleolithic Cave Art by : Gary J. Maier
Download or read book Interpreting Sapiens’ Consciousness through Paleolithic Cave Art written by Gary J. Maier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to identify an interpretive path through Paleolithic cave art that can provide plausible meaning to the animal figures in the Lascaux cave in France. The artwork was created during a period described as the Creative Explosion, spanning from 35,000 to 11,000 BC. The author has found that the artists, or shamans, have left clear evidence of aspects of their worldview and by using ethological evidence, such as a bison shedding its winter coat to identify spring as the season portrayed in a specific panel, he adds a level of certainty to his interpretations. In sum, this book argues that the cave art describes the journey of the soul from the spirit world to the natural world and back, and that it identifies a spectrum of consciousness involving the five traditional senses: sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. Moreover, the book explores the hunting strategies employed early survival groups which are depicted in the cave art. The role of the shamans’ impact on the artwork is also addressed.

Book Synopsis The Cannon (Tup), A Novel by : Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi
Download or read book The Cannon (Tup), A Novel written by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi and published by Ibex Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cannon is the first and best of Gholamhossein Saedi’s three full-length novels. The action is based on historical events taking place in northwestern part of Iran during the constitutional Revolution in the earlier part of the twentieth century. It has an unwavering focus on a single character, that of Mullah Mir Hashem, and develops the plot based on the specificities of that character. Other interesting characters also emerge in the course of the action, but Saedi successfully avoids a diffusion of focus, utilizing ancillary characters to enrich the role of the protagonist in the development of the plotline. The action involves an itinerant mullah who for many years has ministered to the religious and spiritual needs of the tribes scattered in the Azarbaijan province. In the process he has accumulated a small fortune in the form of herds of sheep that he relegates to the care of various tribes. With the rising tide of the Constitutional Revolution and the direct intervention of Russian troops in the northern territories in support of the central government in Tehran in an effort to prevent the eruption of the tribal region, the mullah faces a dilemma whether to ingratiate himself with the commanding general of the Cossack division to protect his interests in case of a conflagration, or to side with the tribes who increasingly display a tendency to join the revolutionaries in Tabriz, the provincial capital. The plot climbs to an exciting climax and the story comes to an unpredictable and intriguing end.

Book excerpt: Five Million Troops Battle for Beijing.... Three Chinese armies swarmed across the trace, with T-59s providing covering fire. Into the bulge created by the sudden onslaught raced the Chinese armor, T-60 tanks with 85mm guns, and behind the T-60s over 90,000 PLA regular frontline troops rushed like ants upon the Americans who were bogged down in the typhoon. Through the waning downpour, the American A-10 Thurnderbolts came in low, their RAU-B Avenger 30mm seven-barreled rotary cannon spitting out a deadly stream of depleted uranium, white-hot fragments that set off the tank's ammunition and fuel tanks into great blowouts of orange-black flame. Four sleek, eighteen-foot long Tomahawk cruise missiles reached the China coast at six hundred miles an hour, hugging the beach at an altitude of twenty feet, then began their contoured, computer-guided flight toward their target three hundred miles away—Beijing. It is Armageddon in Asia.
