Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Bohemia: And Other Studies for Poems The world is full of utterings; As breath is, to the soul; Each unto all, or all for each Their waves together roll. Book Synopsis Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 by : Joanna Levin
Download or read book Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 written by Joanna Levin and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 explores the construction and emergence of "Bohemia" in American literature and culture. Simultaneously a literary trope, a cultural nexus, and a socio-economic landscape, la vie bohème traveled to the United States from the Parisian Latin Quarter in the 1850s. At first the province of small artistic coteries, Bohemia soon inspired a popular vogue, embodied in restaurants, clubs, neighborhoods, novels, poems, and dramatic performances across the country. Levin's study follows la vie bohème from its earliest expressions in the U.S. until its explosion in Greenwich Village in the 1910s. Although Bohemia was everywhere in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American culture, it has received relatively little scholarly attention. Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 fills this critical void, discovering and exploring the many textual and geographic spaces in which Bohemia was conjured. Joanna Levin not only provides access to a neglected cultural phenomenon but also to a new and compelling way of charting the development of American literature and culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cheskian Anthology: Being a History of the Poetical Literature of Bohemia If, says W. Wotton, in his Reflections on Ancient and Modern Learning, ' Homer and Virgil had been Polanders, or High Dutch, they would never, in all probability, have thought it worth their while to attempt the writing of heroic poems. Expressions like these are frequently em ployed by men who scorn all instruction but that which flows from classic sources, and such ex pressions are too often only the exhibition of proud ignorance and idleness. It is easy to despise what we do not comprehend; and to contemn an nu known language and literature is a lighter task than to study them. Book Synopsis The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart by : Kristen Mossler Figg
Download or read book The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart written by Kristen Mossler Figg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart is a meticulous reading of the important but generally neglected short lyric poems of Jean Froissart. The book situates Froissart within the cultural and literary context of fourteenth-century Europe and examines a representative number of his lyric forms (pastourelles, chansons royales, ballades, virelais, and rondeaux) demonstrating their richness of theme and poetic virtuosity. The book provides a readable and reliable English translation, making it possible for English scholars unfamiliar with the original Middle French forms to understand and appreciate the influence Froissart had on Chaucer and other authors of the age. The book focuses on themes, techniques, meters, and rhythms that Froissart employed in his poetry, on how his poetry fits poetic tradition, and on the place of Froissart in literary history.

Download or read book Studies in Musical Genesis, Structure, and Interpretation written by William Kinderman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the evolution of the text and music of this inexhaustible yet highly controversial music drama across Wagner's entire career, and offers a reassessment of the ideological and political history of 'Parsifal' that illuminates the connection of Wagner's legacy to the rise of National Socialism in Germany. The compositional genesis is traced through many unfamiliar sketches and manuscript sources held at Bayreuth, revealing unsuspected models and veiled connections to Wagner's earlier works.
