Book excerpt: Evaluating the fungal durability of wood-plastic composites (WPCs) is complicated by the influence of slow moisture sorption. Recently, the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) Standard Method E10, Testing Wood Preservatives by Laboratory Soil-Block Cultures, was modified to incorporate not only solid wood, but also wood-based composites and WPCs. To simulate long term WPC performance, conditioning of the specimens is now required prior to fungal exposure to increase the moisture content of the specimens. The moisture and fungal durability, as well as the mechanical properties, of two different WPCs were investigated in the laboratory following this new AWPA E10-12 Standard. Wood flour was modified with acetic anhydride and then extruded with high density polyethylene (HDPE). Wood flour was treated with an isothiazolone-based solution and then injected molded with polypropylene (PP). WPCs were conditioned by water soaking either 2 weeks at 22 C or 5 days at 70 C. Weight and moisture content of the WPCs were monitored. Results showed that the acetylation decreased the moisture sorption of the WPCs and showed no mass losses due to decay. The WPC with an isothiazolone-based solution did not show any mass losses due to fungal decay.

Book excerpt: S2The wood flour used in wood-plastic composites (WPCs) can biologically deteriorate and thus the overall mechanical performance of WPCs decrease when exposed to moisture and fungal decay. Protecting the wood flour by chemical modification can improve the durability of the wood in a nontoxic way so it is not harmful to the environment. WPCs were made with modified wood flour and then evaluated for moisture sorption, fungal resistance and mechanical performance. Two different chemical modifications at 2 different levels were used: organosilicate (OS, 1% and 2.5%) and cobalt sulfate (CoS, 2.5% and 5%). All modifications had less weight loss than the unmodified controls with the 2.5% OS blend showing no weight loss from decay by either brown or white rot fungi. Water soaking for 1-week at elevated temperature (70°C) was more aggressive for laboratory decay and mechanical testing as shown by higher weight loss and lower mechanical properties compared to 2-week water soaking at room temperature (23°C). Moisture exposure decreased the mechanical properties, but 2.5% OS, 2.5% CoS and 5% CoS had better performance than the unmodified controls and 1% OS after 70°C conditioning and decay."

Book excerpt: Wood Plastic Composites (WPC) have advantages over natural wood such as improved stiffness, recyclability, and waste minimization. However, issues such as the difficulty of processing WPC with conventional methods, volatile emission from the wood and the composites??? lack of strength must be addressed. A system for continuous extrusion of rectangular profiles of WPC was developed and some critical processing strategies were identified. The use of a lubricant and a calibrator also improved the profile extrusion of WPC. In this work, glass was also added to improve WPC???s mechanical strength. Generally, a glass content of 2.5% appears to improve the properties but further addition does not have a significant effect. Foaming of WPC, which can enhance their properties, was investigated through studying the effect of heating time and temperature on void fraction and cell density.

Book excerpt: Wood plastic composites (WPC) have emerged as new option for composites in the composite industry. WPC have been accepted globally due to their remarkable advantages compared to synthetic fiber composites. In order to manufacture WPC with specific properties and quality, the industries at present employ trial-and-error method. Besides taking up a lot of time, a significant amount of materials is wasted with this method. However, this problem can be reduced to some extent through the use of simulation models for the prediction of the properties in the composites. Modeling and simulation allow users to visualize the effects of the parameters that are especially challenging for comprehension. In addition, the properties of WPC are dependent on the processing conditions. Hence, there are many parameters involved in the manufacturing process. Some of these parameters are important and are included in the simulation model to study and to understand their effects on the final WPC product. Thus, an integrated simulation model has been proposed to predict the thermal and the mechanical properties of WPC, which comprised of three main modules: a) the heat transfer model, b) the mechanical model, and c) the empirical model. The heat transfer model predicts the profile of temperature and the degree of cure via Melt Flow Index (MFI) and Young's modulus for every layer during hot compression molding. Besides, a finite difference method was used to estimate the changes in the temperature in WPC during the compression molding process. Next, the mechanical model predicts the mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus and tensile strength. Lastly, an empirical model to predict the Young's modulus and the tensile strength based on the effects of the coupling agents. All the three models were validated with experimental results. The simulation model for heat transfer inside the board predicted the changes in temperature and the curing index of the composite across the thickness during the compression molding process. The proposed mechanical model successfully predicted the changes in tensile strength and Young's modulus with changes in the percentage of wood fiber. Furthermore, wood fiber was considered as a natural resource with nonuniform properties, as far as this study was concerned. Thus, the changes in the mechanical strength of WPC were predicted as the changes in the properties of wood fibers involved reduction in void volume, alkalization, and variations in moisture content. Moreover, the empirical model predicted the mechanical properties as a function of seven individual parameters for composites that were made of four types of fibers (Jute, Abaca, Hemp, and Pine) and Polypropylene. This model had been found helpful in predicting the effects of coupling agents on the mechanical strength of the composite. Therefore, this integrated research work with GUI should be able to aid the industry and the researchers concerning WPC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the important characteristics affecting many materials including wood, plastic, and wood-plastic composites is their time-dependent behavior. This behavior can be divided into two separate, yet related, phenomena known as creep and creep-rupture. Creep is the increase in deformation over time while subjected to a sustained load. Creep-rupture, or load-duration behavior, is the eventual failure to sustain a constant load due to increased deformation over time. Both have a considerable effect on wood-plastic composite members and must be accounted for in design. The load-duration, or creeprupture, behavior of wood and traditional wood composite products has been studied extensively by numerous researchers, and simplified design procedures to account for both effects are in place. However, the load-duration behavior of composite products made out of the combination of wood and plastic is not well understood or documented. Currently, wood-plastic composite products are available on the commercial market, yet no standardized design procedures to account for creep or duration-of-load effects exist. Given the lack of understanding of the load-duration behavior of wood-plastic composites, a research effort was initiated to investigate the load-duration behavior of various wood-plastic composite formulations and to compare the observed behavior to that of solid sawn lumber. An exponential damage rate model commonly used for solid wood was found to similarly describe the load-duration effect for wood-plastic composites. Proposed adjustment factors were developed following existing procedures for wood products. It was also found that the current adjustment factors, as found in the 1997 edition of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction, can be conservatively applied to wood-plastic composite products, although the adjustment is overly conservative for the materials tested. However, applying adjustment factors based on a short-duration loading was found to be non-conservative. Rate-of-load effects on flexural properties were also experimentally investigated. It was found that a rate-of-load effect existed for both modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity over certain ranges of load-rate values. A rate-of-loading corresponding to 0.01 mm/mm/min was found to produce representative material properties that were slightly conservative
