As a result, large sums of money and innumerable man-hours are spent in efforts to reduce vibration in machinery. A subclass of machinery that is widely used in industry is two-mode flexible systems. Cranes with double-pendulum dynamics and two-link flexible robotic arms are representative examples of two-mode flexible systems. In order to thoroughly understand these types of systems, a detailed study of double-pendulum cranes is preformed. The crane payload is considered to be a distributed mass. The parameters of the payload and the crane has important effects on the dynamic response. the effects are studied as a function of the parameters so that effective control methods can be developed. This thesis develops a technique for improving the control of two-mode flexible systems called input shaping. Input shaping is a control strategy that uses a series of impulses to modify the reference command to suppress unwanted vibration in a system. This thesis reviews several types of input shapers and presents a method for optimizing a robust input shaper called Specified Insensitivity input shapers using knowledge of amplitude contributions of each mode to the overall response. Simulations and experiments are presented to verify the new algorithm. Two human operator studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of input shaping when used in conjunction with distributed crane payloads, such as cargo containers. One study investigates the improvement in efficiency when using input shaping and the differences in efficiency between input shapers. The other study investigates operator learning when moving a payload with unshaped and shaped commands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces and develops the mathematical models used to describe crane dynamics, and explores established and emerging control methods employed for industrial cranes. It opens with a general introduction to the design and structure of various crane types including gantry cranes, rotary cranes, and mobile cranes currently being used for material handling processes. Mathematical models describing their dynamics for control purposes are developed via two different modeling approaches: lumped-mass and distributed parameter models. Control strategies applicable to real industrial problems are then discussed, including open-loop control, feedback control, boundary control, and hybrid control strategies. Finally, based on the methods covered in the book, future research directions are proposed for the advancement of crane technologies. This book can be used by graduate students, engineers, and researchers in the material handling industry including those working in warehouses, manufacturing, construction sites, ship building, seaports, container terminals, nuclear power plants, and in offshore engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an essential guide to nonlinear dynamics and vibration control, detailing both the theory and the practical industrial applications within all aspects of engineering. Demonstrating how to improve efficiency through reducing unwanted vibration, it will aid both students and engineers in practically and safely improving flexible structures through control methods. Increasing demand for light-weight robotic systems and space applications has actuated the design and construction of more flexible structures. These flexible structures, involving numerous dynamic systems, experience unwanted vibrations, impacting accuracy, operating speed, safety and, importantly, efficiency. This book aids engineers in assuaging this issue through vibration control methods, including nonlinear dynamics. It covers topics such as dynamic modeling of nonlinear system, nonlinear oscillators, and modal analyses of multiple-mode system. It also looks at vibration control methods including linear control, nonlinear control, intelligent control, and command smoothers. These control methods are effective and reliable methods to counteract unwanted vibrations. The book is practically minded, using industrial applications throughout, such as bridge cranes, tower cranes, aerial cranes and liquid sloshing. It also discusses cable-suspension structures, light-weight links, and fluid motions which exhibit flexible-structure dynamics. The book will be of interest to students and engineers alike, in the field of mechatronics, mechanical systems and signal processing, nonlinear dynamics, vibration, and control engineering.

Book excerpt: Spacecraft Attitude Control: A Linear Matrix Inequality Approach solves problemsfor spacecraft attitude control systems using convex optimization and, specifi cally, through a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. High-precision pointing and improvedrobustness in the face of external disturbances and other uncertainties are requirementsfor the current generation of spacecraft. This book presents an LMI approach to spacecraftattitude control and shows that all uncertainties in the maneuvering process can besolved numerically. It explains how a model-like state space can be developed through amathematical presentation of attitude control systems, allowing the controller in question tobe applied universally. The authors describe a wide variety of novel and robust controllers, applicable both to spacecraft attitude control and easily extendable to second-ordersystems. Spacecraft Attitude Control provides its readers with an accessible introductionto spacecraft attitude control and robust systems, giving an extensive survey of currentresearch and helping researchers improve robust control performance. - Considers the control requirements of modern spacecraft - Presents rigid and flexible spacecraft control systems with inherent uncertainties mathematically, leading to a model-like state space - Develops a variety of novel and robust controllers directly applicable to spacecraft control as well as extendable to other second-order systems - Includes a systematic survey of recent research in spacecraft attitude control

Book excerpt: Intelligent Control considers non-traditional modelling and control approaches to nonlinear systems. Fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolutionary computing techniques are the main tools used. The book presents a modular switching fuzzy logic controller where a PD-type fuzzy controller is executed first followed by a PI-type fuzzy controller thus improving the performance of the controller compared with a PID-type fuzzy controller. The advantage of the switching-type fuzzy controller is that it uses one rule-base thus minimises the rule-base during execution. A single rule-base is developed by merging the membership functions for change of error of the PD-type controller and sum of error of the PI-type controller. Membership functions are then optimized using evolutionary algorithms. Since the two fuzzy controllers were executed in series, necessary further tuning of the differential and integral scaling factors of the controller is then performed. Neural-network-based tuning for the scaling parameters of the fuzzy controller is then described and finally an evolutionary algorithm is applied to the neurally-tuned-fuzzy controller in which the sigmoidal function shape of the neural network is determined. The important issue of stability is addressed and the text demonstrates empirically that the developed controller was stable within the operating range. The text concludes with ideas for future research to show the reader the potential for further study in this area. Intelligent Control will be of interest to researchers from engineering and computer science backgrounds working in the intelligent and adaptive control.
