Book excerpt: Comprehension is a vital requirement for every student as he or she progresses through school, and a student's motivation to read can directly affect comprehension skills. Many strategies are used to increase reading comprehension across grade levels. At a suburban middle school in the Midwest, 67 students in three sixth-grade reading classes participated in a study to determine if the use of literature circles would increase reading comprehension as well as student motivation to read. Students were taught how to operate and participate in literature circle discussions with various readings. They were then divided into groups, and each group was given a different novel to read and discuss within literature circles. Comprehension was assessed by studying student journal response entries while motivation was assessed by comparing survey results. Using the aforementioned assessments, a slight gain in comprehension was recorded, but results varied for the use of literature circles affecting motivation to read. Keywords: comprehension, reading, motivation, middle school.

Book excerpt: This capstone answers the question how do comprehension strategies incorporated into sustained silent reading impact 6th grade students' reading achievement? I begin by defining the middle school reader, and then explore the purpose of sustained silent reading, provide a definition of reading comprehension, and investigate the effectiveness of sustained silent reading, specifically in response to the National Reading Panel's 2000 stance against sustained silent reading as an effective instructional practice to improve reading comprehension. I challenge the Panel's position by researching five reading strategies--think-alouds, conferences, reciprocal teaching, and response journals--and incorporate these strategies into my curriculum. I provide my results by looking at student journal responses, student reflections, reading test scores from the Measure of Academic Progress, and my own self-reflection. I prove that strategies incorporated into my sustained silent reading program had a positive and significant impact on my students' reading scores.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the opinions of sixth grade ELL students after learning three cognitive reading comprehension strategies. Did their attitudes toward reading change? Did the strategies enhance their understanding? Six Hmong students and one Latino student participated in the study. Using the research of Keene and Zimmermann and Harvey and Goodvis, I taught making connections, visualizing, and synthesizing. I conducted pre- and post-teaching focus groups and surveys, and took field notes. Results were positive. Attitudes of four students toward reading improved. Six of the seven students said that learning strategies increased their understanding of what they read. Benefits of the strategies included additional thinking about the book, helping to find the main ideas, and generating self-confidence as readers.

Book excerpt: This report on the educational needs of American gifted and talented students identifies indicators of an educational crisis, describes the current status of education for these students, and presents recommendations to meet the educational needs of these students. Indicators demonstrating the need for change include the relatively poor performance by American students on international tests and the small number of students performing at the highest levels on National Assessment of Educational Progress tests. Recent studies have shown that gifted and talented elementary school students have mastered 35-40% of the curriculum in five basic subjects before they begin the school year; most regular classroom teachers make few, if any, provisions for talented students; highest achieving students study less than an hour a day; and only 2 cents out of every $100 spent on K-12 education supports special opportunities for talented students. A review describes how gifted and talented students are currently identified, the number of students served, the kind of support available, the kind of education most gifted and talented students receive, and characteristics of effective programs for these students. Seven recommendations are offered: (1) set challenging curricular standards; (2) establish high-level learning opportunities; (3) ensure access to early childhood education; (4) increase learning opportunities for disadvantaged and minority children with outstanding talents; (5) broaden the definition of gifted (a broadened definition based on the federal Javits Gifted and Talented Education Act is offered); (6) encourage appropriate teacher training and technical assistance; and (7) match world performance. (Contains 43 references.) (DB)

Book excerpt: Diverse learners with exceptional needs require a specialized curriculum that will help them to develop socially and intellectually in a way that traditional pedagogical practice is unable to fulfill. As educational technologies and theoretical approaches to learning continue to advance, so do the opportunities for exceptional children. Special and Gifted Education: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications is an exhaustive compilation of emerging research, theoretical concepts, and real-world examples of the ways in which the education of special needs and exceptional children is evolving. Emphasizing pedagogical innovation and new ways of looking at contemporary educational practice, this multi-volume reference work is ideal for inclusion in academic libraries for use by pre-service and in-service teachers, graduate-level students, researchers, and educational software designers and developers.
