Some manifestations include polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. If parents are not taught these symptoms, repeated admissions due to complications may occur For parents of children with newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes mellitus, (P) how does education (I) compared with no education (C) improve parental efficacy to identify warning symptoms of juvenile diabetes in young children (O)? Methods. Give parents a pre assessment to establish a baseline data. After educating, a post assessment will be given. To reduce prevalence, continuous education is the solution through handouts, power points, et cetera Current policies and procedures involve education that stresses continuous blood glucose monitoring, administration of insulin when appropriate, and incorporating a healthy lifestyle built on a nutritious diet with frequent physical activity. Evidence-based research has proven the rationale for the educational needs of families with young children. The aim is to reduce the incidence of juvenile diabetes and prevent the morbidity and mortality rates that accompany the disease. Goal. Ultimately develop a structured diabetic education group for families with confirmed diagnosis that can provide them with confidence to perform skills required in self-care in their children and adolescents.

The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Mary Dixon-Woods and colleagues (Mary Dixon-Woods, Booth, & Sutton, 2007) identified 42 qualitative evidence synthesis papers published in health care literature between 1990 and 2004. An ongoing update by Hannes and Macaitis (2010)identified around 100 additional qualitative or mixed methods syntheses. Yet these generally lack a clear, detailed description of what was done and why (Greenhalgh et al, 2007; McInnes & Wimpenny, 2008). Choices are most commonly influenced by what others have successfully used in the past or by a particular school of thought (Atkins et al, 2008; Britten et al, 2002). This is a substantive limitation. This book brings balance to the options available to researchers, including approaches that have not had a substantial uptake among researchers. It provides arguments for when and why researchers or other parties of interest should opt for a certain approach to synthesis, which challenges they might face in adopting it and what the potential strengths and weaknesses are compared with other approaches. This book acts as a resource for readers who would otherwise have to piece together the methodology from a range of journal articles. In addition, it should stimulate further development and documentation of synthesis methodology in a field that is characterized by diversity.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare parent-reported measures of child resilience, child mental health, parent stress, and parenting self-efficacy between a group of parents of children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) (ages of 6-12 years old) and a group of parents with typically-developing children without chronic illness (ages of 6-12 years old). The four hypotheses were as follows: 1) Parents of children diagnosed with T1D will have higher levels of stress than parents of children without T1D. 2) Children diagnosed with T1D will have higher levels of parent-reported child mental health issues than children without T1D. If hypothesis 1 is supported, then the influence of parent stress will be included in this analysis. 3) The relationship between a diagnosis of T1D and parent-reported child mental health issues is moderated by the child's level of parent-reported psychological resilience. 4) The relationship between a diagnosis of T1D and parent-reported child mental health issues is moderated by the parent's level of parenting self-efficacy. For hypotheses 1 and 2, it was found that parents of children with T1D reported significantly higher amounts of both parent stress and parent-reported child mental health issues than comparison group parents. However, once the effect of parent stress and parenting self-efficacy had been accounted for, there was no longer a significant difference in child mental health issues. For hypotheses 3 and 4, while the individual predictor of child group status (type 1 diabetic, comparison group) significantly affected the outcome variable, neither of the moderating variables of child resilience or parenting self-efficacy significantly influenced the relationship between child group status and amount of child mental health issues. In conclusion, the moderating variables of child resilience and parenting self-efficacy were found to not significantly affect the amount of child mental health issues differently based on whether the child had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes or had no chronic illness.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a workshop/support group for parents raising children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Diagnosis of a chronic disease in a child generally arouses acute anxiety and stress in parents. Parental stress when raising a child with type 1 diabetes is often centered on worry about their child's health and parents' ability to maintain the care activities needed by these children. Parents are the primary caregivers of children with Type 1 diabetes, and the effect of stress on parents can impact the health of both children and parents. The present study examined parents of children with type 1 diabetes who attended four separate two hour support groups/workshops. The Pediatric Inventory for Parents (Streisand, 2001) measured parenting stress. The parents completed the Pediatric Inventory for Parents, at the beginning of the first workshop and again at the end of all the workshops. Parents also completed an open ended questionnaire at the end of each workshop. Parents responded positively to the workshops. Parents stated that hearing how others worked through difficult situations while raising their child with type 1 diabetes was helpful. In quantitative analyses, parents had lower mean scores, post- vs. pre- test on measures of stress related to emotional functioning, communication, medical care, and role function. Research shows that support groups that involve the entire family are most beneficial (McBroom & Enriquez, 2009). Nurse practitioners should consider sponsoring or becoming involved in workshops for parents raising children with type 1 diabetes.
