Discrepancies that exist between what educators believe about good developmental guidance programs and what is typical in secondary schools are discussed, and widely accepted concepts about administration of effective guidance programs are described. Seven operational objectives of guidance programs are listed, and the services (pupil-inventory, information, counseling, placement, follow-up needs assessment) needed to reach these objectives are described. Components of designing an effective guidance program are presented, including revitalizing the guidance program, assessing pupil needs, agreeing on goals and priorities, program needs assessment, and implementing the program. The roles of the principal and middle school counselor are described. Models for middle school guidance programs, including the teacher-advisor approach are presented. The role of the classroom teacher in the guidance program is described. The teacher-advisor guidance program, which is intended to provide greater emphasis upon the guidance function of the school through a well-defined structure for group guidance activities which can be specifically defined, assigned, and evaluated, is discussed in some detail. Book excerpt: At the middle school level, school climate, curriculum, instructional strategies, and the availability of positive adult role models all affect student performance. This study sought to determine student perceptions of discipline effectiveness, teaching strategies, and school climate. Early adolescents (N=220) between the ages of 11 and 16 in 20 middle schools were interviewed. The schools were representative of large, urban, suburban, and rural settings. Results showed a more positive picture of student perceptions of their schools than might have been expected. When asked to describe their schools, 53 percent gave positive comments, 36 percent gave negative comments, and 11 percent gave noncommital comments. Every student mentioned at least once that they would like someone to listen to them. For the most part the students who were interviewed were gregarious and talkative and needed more time to socialize than the school day allowed. Fourteen recommendations are given for middle school administrators to use in developing programs for students who cause repeated classroom disturbances and are at risk of alienating themselves from the schooling process. These recommendations range from designing an active advisory program and comprehensive curriculum to helping teachers plan for effective instruction. (ABL)

Empirical studies show that when school counselors are involved in academic interventions then student academic performance improves. This study explores middle school counselors' use of academic interventions to enhance student academic performance. Specifically, this study examines middle school counselors' experiences (use, extent of use, frequency of use) with academic interventions and how particular school counselor (years of experience, caseload) and school variables (size, type, setting, number of students receiving free/reduced lunch) are related to the use of academic interventions. This study examined three critical questions and tested six hypotheses using a quantitative research design. A series of descriptive statistics and one way ANOVAs were used to answer the study's three research questions. Two hundred fifty-nine middle school counselors from around the United States participated in the School Counselor Use of Academic Intervention Survey. This online survey consisted of counseling and school demographic information, intervention use, extent and frequency of intervention use and what time of day interventions took place. The study found that middle school counselors reported actively using evidence-based academic interventions to enhance student success. As the school counselor's caseload increases, the use of academic interventions decreases. Similarly, as the student population increases, the school counselor's use of academic interventions decreases. The impact of years of experience was inconsistent, with increased and decreased use of academic interventions in a non-linear pattern. The school counselor's role in improving student academic success is a focus in current school counseling literature; but little research has examined the use of interventions, especially at the middle school level. The findings from this study demonstrate the important role middle school counselors have in using academic interventions. Limitations, implications, and suggestions for further research are provided.
