Book excerpt: The proposed Bremer, Chickasaw, and Floyd County U.S. 218 improvement project NHA-218-8(39)--19-09, also knows as PIN 91-09020-1 & 2 and PIN 91-19500-1, begins just north of Waverly in Sections 29/30, T92N-R14W, Lafayette Township, at the north terminus of the future U.S. 218 bypass around Waverly in Bremer County. It extends north and west to Section 33, T95N-R15W, connecting with the south terminus of the future U.S. 218 bypass of Charles City in Floyd County for a total distance of 33 km (21mi). A four-lane divided highway will be constructed following the existing alignment. Two segments, the Plainfield bypass and the Nashua bypass, cover entirely all new alignment within an average 120 m (400 ft) corridor. The Plainfield Bypass begins in the SE1/4 of Section 30, Polk Township (T93N-R14W) and passes along the west side of Plainfield, then runs due north dividing Section 19 and the lower quarter of Section 18 at the half section line, until reconnecting with present U.S. 218 in the NE1/4 of Section 19 (T93N-R14W) approximately 1.3 mi (2.1 km) north of town. Nashua Bypass. This bypass has two options. The first Nashua bypass option begins .25 km (.16 mi) north of 290th Street. The bypass will continue along the west side of Nashua (.4 km/.25mi) west of present U.S. 218 connecting to 290th Street (County Road B60). Option 2 consists of a diamond interchange as part of the initial bypass construction located at the intersection of 280th Street (County Road B60) and a route extension of Iowa 346, relocating both of these roadways. It would continue along the west side of Nashua (.4 km/.25 mi. west of present 218) with a crossing proposed at 270th Street. Approximately 1.8 km (1 mi) northwest of 270th Street, the bypass will tie back into the present alignment. Archaeological survey of the proposed right-of-way has been completed by Kris Hirst and report preparation is in progress. Within that report she has identified four historic archaeological sites in Pearl Rock. Three historic archaeological sites lie within the precincts of two of the historic architectural sites (13-CW-38H and 13-CW-39H) and a fourth within the front yard of modern site 13-CW-41H (Figure 4). Preliminarily it appears that all four of these historic archaeological sites, which date to the 1880's (personal communication, Kris Hirst 1996), were destroyed by the tornado of 1918. The front yard of 13-CW-39H contain two historic archaeological sites (13CW53 and 13CW54). Modern architectural site 13-CW-41H contains historic archaeological site 13CW53H within the southwest corner of the front yard. These historic archaeological sites will be fully evaluated in the archaeological report, however they do not directly relate to the post-1918 context proposed for the potential historic district of Pearl Rock, and are considered noncontributing resources. The historic architectural survey reported here identified 38 architectural properties, including three individual historic sites, twenty-four farmsteads, two commercial, and nine modern properties. All identified architectural properties within the project area of effect required evaluation under the National Register of Historic Places Criteria for Evaluation and Criteria Considerations (National Register Branch 1991a).
