Book excerpt: This book promotes understanding of the raw material selection, refractory design, tailor-made refractory developments, refractory properties, and methods of application. It provides a complete analysis of modern iron and steel refractories. It describes the daily demands on modern refractories and describes how these needs can be addressed or improved upon to help achieve the cleanest and largest yields of iron and steel. The text contains end-of-chapter summaries to help reinforce difficult concepts. It also includes problems at the end of chapters to confirm the reader's understanding of topics such as hoop stress modeling in steel ladle and vessels, establishment of thermal gradient modeling , refractory corrosion dynamics, calculation of Blast furnace trough dimension based on thermal modeling, to name a few. Led by editors with backgrounds in both academia and industry, this book can be used in college courses, as a reference for industry professionals, and as an introduction to the technology for those making the transition to industry. Stands as a comprehensive introduction to the science and technology of modern steel and iron-making refractories that examines the processes, construction, and potential improvement of refractory performance and sustainability; Serves as a versatile resource appropriate for all levels, from the student to industry novices to professionals; Reinforces difficult-to-grasp concepts with end-of-chapter summaries; Maximizes reader understanding of key topics, such as refractory selection for steel ladle and vessels, and their corrosion dynamics, with real life problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is based upon the electroslag refining (ESR) operations undertaken by the Commonwealth Steel Company, Waratah, NSW, and draws upon detailed technical records of both production and experimental operations over an extended period. A wide range of slag/deoxidant combinations used during the electroslag refining of low alloy steels was evaluated to determine the influence on the types of inclusion and their morphology in the final steel product. No significant variations in inclusion type or overall cleanliness were observed for the more conventional slags or for those containing up to 10% silica, whether they are combined with aluminum, calcium silicide or Hypercal deoxidation treatment. There were trends towards slightly increased amounts of globular type D inclusions and reduced aluminate levels when using clacium slicide deoxidation, while with aluminum deoxidation slightly higher aluminate levels were recorded.

Book excerpt: As product specifications become more demanding, manufacturers require steel with ever more specific functional properties. As a result, there has been a wealth of research on how those properties emerge during steelmaking. Fundamentals of metallurgy summarises this research and its implications for manufacturers. The first part of the book reviews the effects of processing on the properties of metals with a range of chapters on such phenomena as phase transformations, types of kinetic reaction, transport and interfacial phenomena. Authors discuss how these processes and the resulting properties of metals can be modelled and predicted. Part two discusses the implications of this research for improving steelmaking and steel properties. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Fundamentals of metallurgy is an invaluable reference for steelmakers and manufacturers requiring high-performance steels in such areas as automotive and aerospace engineering. It will also be useful for those dealing with non-ferrous metals and alloys, material designers for functional materials, environmentalists and above all, high technology industries designing processes towards materials with tailored properties. Summarises key research and its implications for manufacturers Essential reading for steelmakers and manufacturers Written by leading experts from both industry and academia

Book excerpt: Investigations carried out by several institutions under Projects RP559, RP2060, RP1403, RP2741 for the Electric Power Research Institute, Palo Alto, CA, resulted in a 3.5% NiCrMoV steel completely free from temper embrittlement as a material for low pressure rotors but also for combination proberty rotors, for example, integral high-pressure low-pressure (HILP) rotors for future steam plants. This steel contains very low percentages of residual elements including sulfur and phosphorus, and its contents of aluminum, silicon, and manganese are also very low.
