Book excerpt: The statistical bootstrap is one of the methods that can be used to calculate estimates of a certain number of unknown parameters of a random process or a signal observed in noise, based on a random sample. Such situations are common in signal processing and the bootstrap is especially useful when only a small sample is available or an analytical analysis is too cumbersome or even impossible. This book covers the foundations of the bootstrap, its properties, its strengths and its limitations. The authors focus on bootstrap signal detection in Gaussian and non-Gaussian interference as well as bootstrap model selection. The theory developed in the book is supported by a number of useful practical examples written in MATLAB. The book is aimed at graduate students and engineers, and includes applications to real-world problems in areas such as radar and sonar, biomedical engineering and automotive engineering.

Book excerpt: This book presents neural partial differentiation as an estimation algorithm for extracting aerodynamic derivatives from flight data. It discusses neural modeling of the aircraft system. The neural partial differentiation approach discussed in the book helps estimate parameters with their statistical information from the noisy data. Moreover, this method avoids the need for prior information about the aircraft model parameters. The objective of the book is to extend the use of the neural partial differentiation method to the multi-input multi-output aircraft system for the online estimation of aircraft parameters from an established neural model. This approach will be relevant for the design of an adaptive flight control system. The book also discusses the estimation of aerodynamic derivatives of rigid and flexible aircraft which are treated separately. The longitudinal and lateral-directional derivatives of aircraft are estimated from flight data. Besides the aerodynamic derivatives, mode shape parameters of flexible aircraft are also identified in the book as part of identification for the state space aircraft model. Since the detailed description of the approach is illustrated through the block diagram and their results are presented in tabular form with figures of parameters converge to their estimates, the contents of this book are intended for readers who want to pursue a postgraduate and doctoral degree in science and engineering. This book is useful for practicing scientists, engineers, and teachers in the field of aerospace engineering.

Book excerpt: This research evaluated a process to improve aircraft stability derivative estimation results. The Have Derivatives process used overlap ensemble averaging in the frequency domain to minimize noise on the original time domain signals. The process estimated average complex frequency response functions that were then transformed back into the time domain as a set of discrete pulse responses with far less noise than the original signals. These clean signals were used in a parameter estimation program to estimate better stability derivatives than were estimated with the original noisy signals. Both simulation and flight test data were used to study the effects of various noise levels on stability derivative estimation results and to evaluate the Have Derivatives process to improve those results. The simulations demonstrated dramatic improvement using the Have Derivatives process. The flight test results were not as conclusive. The ensemble averaging step of the Have Derivatives process was not effective enough at reducing noise on the flight test data due to non-uniform frequency content of the flight test input. The overall recommendation was to further evaluate the Have Derivatives process using a broadband flight test input, similar to the input that worked well in simulation.

Book excerpt: A real-time, frequency-domain, equation-error parameter identification (PID) technique was used to estimate stability and control derivatives from flight data. This technique is being studied to support adaptive control system concepts currently being developed by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), academia, and industry. This report describes the basic real-time algorithm used for this study and implementation issues for onboard usage as part of an indirect-adaptive control system. A confidence measures system for automated evaluation of PID results is discussed. Results calculated using flight data from a modified F-15 aircraft are presented. Test maneuvers included pilot input doublets and automated inputs at several flight conditions. Estimated derivatives are compared to aerodynamic model predictions. Data indicate that the real-time PID used for this study performs well enough to be used for onboard parameter estimation. For suitable test inputs, the parameter estimates converged rapidly to sufficient levels of accuracy. The devised confidence measures used were moderately successful.Smith, Mark S. and Moes, Timothy R. and Morelli, Eugene A.Armstrong Flight Research Center; Langley Research CenterF-15 AIRCRAFT; PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION; REAL TIME OPERATION; STABILITY DERIVATIVES; CONTROL STABILITY; CONTROL SYSTEMS DESIGN; FREQUENCY DOMAIN ANALYSIS; FLIGHT CONDITIONS; INDUSTRIES; NASA PROGRAMS; FOURIER TRANSFORMATION; REGRESSION ANALYSIS; ALGORITHMS; ERROR ANALYSIS; ONBOARD DATA PROCESSING

Book excerpt: Acoustic signal is one of the hot topics of research in physics and has been studied by many engineers and scientists in various real-world fields, including underwater acoustics, architectural acoustics, engineering acoustics, physical acoustics, environmental acoustics, psychological acoustics, and so on. Noise reduction is the foundation of acoustic signal pre-processing, and the feature extraction for noise reduction signals can obtain useful information from the acoustic signal, which is the linchpin for pattern recognition, target detection, tracking, and localization.

Book excerpt: Parameter estimation is an inverse process in which stability derivatives are determined from time history flight data by matching the aircraft mathematical model's computed response with the measured response of the aircraft. Accurate parameter estimation depends mainly on instrumentation and input technique. Input technique is the focus of this thesis in which both classical inputs and optimal inputs were applied under the same flight conditions to the High Angle of Attack Research Vehicle (HARV) at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. Post flight parameter estimation was conducted in all cases using a maximum likelihood technique to determine estimated of stability and control derivatives and their respective Cramer-Rao bounds. The Cramer-Rao bound is the most useful measure of estimate accuracy when comparing results from different input techniques assuming the same mathematical model and minimization technique were used for the parameter estimates. Comparison of the Cramer-Rao bounds showed that of the four input techniques used for determining parameter estimates, the Dryden single-surface input technique yielded the most accurate parameters for 75 percent of the estimates in all cases. Application of these conclusions in further research can save time and costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, extensive research has been performed in post-stall aerodynamic model development to facilitate the use of simulator-based stall recovery training for commercial pilots. To develop these aerodynamic models, the parameters within a postulated model structure are often estimated from flight test data in a process referred to as aircraft parameter estimation. However, the complex dynamics involved in stall poses some notable challenges to the parameter estimation procedure. This thesis presents and investigates a variety of parameter estimation methods that yield more accurate estimates than traditional techniques when applied to stall modelling problems. Specifically, these methods look to reduce parameter biases that occur during post-stall modelling problems due to the presence of large model deficiencies. The presented methods are applied to both simulated and real aircraft flight data to demonstrate the improvements seen over traditional aircraft parameter estimation methods.
