Les différents ressorts de l'activité sont mis en évidence à partir de la filière : Bruxelles-Cotonou, l'une des plus importantes routes connectant l'Europe au Bénin. Historiquement, ce pays a joué un rôle moteur dans la réexportation de marchandises à l'échelle de l'Afrique de l'Ouest au point d'être considéré comme un véritable « État-entrepôt ». Cette situation a été d'autant plus renforcée grâce à la présence de son voisin, le Nigeria. Ces deux pays entretiennent des relations économiques complexes jouant à la fois sur la politique protectionniste du Nigeria et un relatif laissez-faire dans les échanges transfrontaliers. La Belgique, quant à elle, s'est progressivement positionnée comme la plaque tournante du commerce d'exportation de véhicules d'occasion en Europe. Cette position est certes due à la présence du port d'Anvers, mais aussi à la transformation d'un quartier du centre de Bruxelles en un véritable marché géant de l'occasion centralisant des véhicules en provenance de toute l'Europe. Cet ouvrage nous invite à suivre le trajet de ces voitures de l'Europe jusqu'à l'Afrique, et soulève de nombreuses interrogations en termes écologiques, économiques et politiques, donnant ainsi à voir une autre dimension de la mondialisation économique.
