Mon travail de these porte en particulier sur la dynamique de la couche limite atmospherique (cla), son cycle diurne et les processus d'echanges a differents echelles atmospheriques qui concernent la qualite de l'air dans des grandes villes comme paris et buenos aires. La premiere partie traite des strategies d'observation de la cla en ce qui concerne la recherche des processus dynamiques. Cette etude s'appuie sur des observation intensives menees a palaiseau et egalement, sur des observations plus etendues dans le temps pour les etudes de climatologie faites a buenos aires. Ensuite une etude de la phase de transition nocturne-diurne a l'echelle locale est presente. Puis la signature des processus de meso echelle sur la clac a buenos aires et puis la signature de processus de tres grande echelle sur la dynamique de long terme de la clac a buenos aires lors de l'evenement enso 1997-1998. A l'echelle locale, la phase de transition nocturne-diurne a ete etudiee d'un point de vue conceptuel selon differents schemas deja etablis dans la litterature scientifique. Je propose une nouvelle formulation conceptuelle de la transition nocturne-diurne impliquant le couplage entre la couche limite residuelle et la couche limite convective en developpement. Les differents schemas existants ont ete retrouves dans cette nouvelle consideration de couplage dynamique dans la transition nocturne-diurne. Certains parametres d'importance pour la pollution ont ete mis en evidence dans ce processus a l'echelle locale comme : l'entrainement dans la couche residuelle, le processus de melange vers le bas, les taux de croissance et decroissance de la couche residuelle et la couche convective dans la transition et le rapport de vitesse d'entrainement de la couche convective a la couche residuelle. En ce qui concerne l'episode de pollution a palaiseau pendant la poi 6 d'esquif, une methodologie d'analyses de processus impliquant (advection, subsidence, jet de bas couches, surface frontales et effondrement de la couche residuelle) a ete proposee pour l'analyse d'un cas d'intrusion d'ozone a la couche limite de surface. Cette methodologie va nous permettre de considerer differents forcages dynamique pour la modelisation meso-echelle de processus de pollution urbaine et suburbaine. D'autre part la signature dynamique de la clac a ete etudiee en relation avec les processus des echelles moyennes en particulier le phenomene de sudestada a buenos aires et son impact sur le coefficient de ventilation concernant la qualite de l'air. En fin, la signature de processus de grande echelle a partir du enso est montre en calculant les zones de coherence de teleconnexion selon les differentes natures de processus, evolution du couplage grande echelle dans le temps et un etude preliminaire d'impact sur l'echelle locale a buenos aires. Cette etude nous a permi de proposer un echantillonnage bidimensionnel et temporel pour bien cerner les interactions d'echelles atmospheriques et l'impact sur la qualite de l'air des grandes villes.

Book excerpt: During wintertime anticyclonic regimes, urbanized mountain areas often experience stable and decoupled atmospheric conditions, resulting in severe episodes of particulate air pollution. This study deals with the characterization of drivers of particulate air pollution in deep alpine valleys under such stable conditions from the point of view of atmospheric dynamics. The work has been carried out through the implementation of both idealized and real case numerical simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Particulate air pollution has been modelled by implementing passive tracers in the simulations.In a first part, high-resolution numerical simulations have been performed using two different configurations of three-dimensional idealized valleys opening onto a plain. The first configuration corresponds to a valley of constant width in the along-valley direction, directly opening onto a plain. The second one consists in a valley of varying width in that direction, with an upstream section of larger width than the downstream section, which opens onto the plain. The latter configuration is referred to as a pooling case. The change in the vertical temperature profile along the valley axis in all configurations results in a horizontal pressure gradient that leads to the development of an along-valley flow. Configurations in which the upstream section of the valley opens onto a narrower one have shown to be prone to higher pollutant concentrations than in the case of a valley opening directly onto a plain, due to the weaker down-valley flow developing in the variable width configurations. The impact of the downstream valley section on the concentration of pollutants in the upstream valley section is remarkable: the ventilation of the upstream valley section can be completely blocked for most of the simulation (six hours) when the ratio of the upstream to downstream valley section width is equal to 10.The second part deals with a real case situation, focusing on a section of the alpine Arve River valley around the city of Passy. The numerical modelling of the atmospheric dynamics and particulate matter (PM) concentration in that section has been performed during a strongly polluted wintertime episode of February 2015. For this purpose the emission inventory prepared by the air quality agency of the région Auvergne Rhône-Alpes has been implemented in the WRF-Chem model. The boundary layer dynamics has been compared to wind and temperature profiles collected during a field campaign conducted during the episode, and PM concentration has been compared to data recorded by air quality stations. The contribution of the valley tributaries to air pollution within the section considered has been first studied. Results show that this contribution is very small compared to that from local sources; this implies that in-situ emissions are primarily responsible for the high PM concentration recorded in the valley since the valley bottom is decoupled from the atmosphere above the valley. The ventilation characteristics of the valley and their influence on the particulate matter (PM) concentration have next been investigated. The analysis indicates that due to the limited ventilation around the city of Passy, the hourly variability of PM concentration therein is driven by that of the emissions.

Book excerpt: L'étude se concentre sur l'analyse de la dynamique de la Couche Limite Atmosphérique stable et hivernale en vallée, notamment dans des situations conduisant à des épisodes de pollution particulaire. L'analyse est effectuée à partir de simulations numériques de type LES et de mesures locales. Dans une première partie, on étudie les vents catabatiques prenant naissance sur les pentes des vallées encaissées. On montre qu'ils sont instationnaires, inhomogènes et turbulents, que leur diffusivité turbulente évolue quadratiquement avec le nombre de Froude et décroît avec la stratification ambiante. On s'intéresse ensuite au champ d'ondes internes généré par ces vents. On trouve que sa fréquence ne dépend que de la stratification et est indépendante des caractéristiques des vents qui lui donnent naissance. Dans une seconde partie, on s'intéresse au système de vents de vallées et aux inversions thermiques dans les vallées Grenobloises. Les conditions météorologiques conduisant aux épisodes de pollution sont étudiées et leur lien avec les mécanismes précédents est explicité. On montre que ces épisodes se déroulent toujours dans un contexte anticyclonique, sont induits par la présence d'une inversion et que leur évolution est liée à celle des régimes de temps. Pendant ces épisodes, le système de vents local est toujours similaire, indépendant du régime synoptique et constitué de vents thermiques, dont l'organisation spatiale est gouvernée par la géométrie du site. Ces courants sont contenus dans la couche d'inversion qui persiste pendant toute la durée de l'épisode et n'est pas détruite si l'énergie solaire est insuffisante. Le seuil énergétique correspondant est mis en évidence.

Book excerpt: The use of infrasound to monitor the atmosphere has, like infrasound itself, gone largely unheard of through the years. But it has many applications, and it is about time that a book is being devoted to this fascinating subject. Our own involvement with infrasound occurred as graduate students of Prof. William Donn, who had established an infrasound array at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) of Columbia University. It was a natural outgrowth of another major activity at Lamont, using seismic waves to explore the Earth’s interior. Both the atmosphere and the solid Earth feature velocity (seismic or acoustic) gradients in the vertical which act to refract the respective waves. The refraction in turn allows one to calculate the respective background structure in these mediums, indirectly exploring locations that are hard to observe otherwise. Monitoring these signals also allows one to discover various phenomena, both natural and man-made (some of which have military applications).
