Book excerpt: Master's Thesis in the subject Computer Science - IT-Security, , language: English, abstract: Big Data analytics is the act of analysing data to discover hidden patterns, trends, preferences, and other important information in order to detect infiltration, prevent fraud, and possibly make the right judgements. This study was carried out to investigate the implementation of big data analytics as a technique for information protection against cyber attacks. This study specifically examined the extent of big data analytics implementation and the challenges militating the adoption and full implementation. The survey research design was employed and a total of one hundred and twenty-one staff members of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were enrolled in the study. The instrumentation of questionnaire was used to elicit information from the study participants. The data collected were analysed using the binary logistic regression. Findings from the study revealed that big data analytics provides better advantage to information protection against cyber attacks. Also, the findings showed that to a significant extent, big data analytics has not been full adopted and implemented by institution and organizations in Nigeria. This gap was detected in this study to be a result of high cost of hiring expert personnel, time and large quantity of silos. These factors indirectly affects the decision of top management regarding the adoption and implementation of big data analytics. This study recommends the adoption and implementation of big data analytics by organizations and institutions in Nigeria. Adequate training should be provided for staff members whose job description involves interacting with big data.

Book excerpt: The issue of protecting essential infrastructure against the threat of terrorist attack is one which continues to concern governments worldwide. But terrorism is not the only threat this infrastructure may face: environmental hazards, industrial accidents and sabotage are also major concerns. Protecting critical infrastructure is expensive, but many of the solutions apply whatever the cause of the problem, and in these days of scarce resources, multi-sector or multi-threat solutions are preferred. This book presents the proceedings of the NATO Centre of Excellence – Defence against Terrorism (COE-DAT) Advanced Research Workshop entitled Critical Infrastructure Protection, held in Ankara, Turkey, in May 2012. The workshop brought together 44 participants from 13 countries and consisted of five sessions: a general overview of policy, tools and techniques; the realities of implementation; protection of energy infrastructure; protection of communications and information infrastructure; and protection of transport infrastructure. The papers were presented by 16 expert speakers – military and civilian practitioners, business leaders, diplomats, and academics – from 6 countries, and each was followed by a detailed discussion and debate. The workshop concluded with a summary of all the topics reflected in the individual papers presented. This book represents a significant contribution to furthering the science of counterterrorism, and will be of interest to all whose work involves all aspects of Critical Infrastructure Protection and the terrorist threat to infrastructure.

Book excerpt: Increased reliance on the Internet and other networked systems raise the risks of cyber attacks that could harm our nation's cyber infrastructure. The cyber infrastructure encompasses a number of sectors including: the nation's mass transit and other transportation systems; banking and financial systems; factories; energy systems and the electric power grid; and telecommunications, which increasingly rely on a complex array of computer networks, including the public Internet. However, many of these systems and networks were not built and designed with security in mind. Therefore, our cyber infrastructure contains many holes, risks, and vulnerabilities that may enable an attacker to cause damage or disrupt cyber infrastructure operations. Threats to cyber infrastructure safety and security come from hackers, terrorists, criminal groups, and sophisticated organized crime groups; even nation-states and foreign intelligence services conduct cyber warfare. Cyber attackers can introduce new viruses, worms, and bots capable of defeating many of our efforts. Costs to the economy from these threats are huge and increasing. Government, business, and academia must therefore work together to understand the threat and develop various modes of fighting cyber attacks, and to establish and enhance a framework to assess the vulnerability of our cyber infrastructure and provide strategic policy directions for the protection of such an infrastructure. This book addresses such questions as: How serious is the cyber threat? What technical and policy-based approaches are best suited to securing telecommunications networks and information systems infrastructure security? What role will government and the private sector play in homeland defense against cyber attacks on critical civilian infrastructure, financial, and logistical systems? What legal impediments exist concerning efforts to defend the nation against cyber attacks, especially in preventive, preemptive, and retaliatory actions?

Book excerpt: Although cybersecurity is something of a latecomer on the computer science and engineering scene, there are now inclinations to consider cybersecurity a meta-discipline. Unlike traditional information and communication systems, the priority goal of the cybersecurity of cyber-physical systems is the provision of stable and reliable operation for the critical infrastructures of all fundamental societal functions and activities. This book, Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Protection via Reflection of Industrial Control Systems, presents the 28 papers delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, and held online from 27-29 October 2021. The inspiration and motivation behind the ARW stem from the growth in large-scale cyber attacks, the rising degree of complexity and sophistication of advanced threats, and the need to protect critical infrastructure by promoting and building a resilient system to promote the well-being of all citizens. The workshop covered a wide range of cybersecurity topics, permeating the main ideas, concepts and paradigms behind ICS and blended with applications and practical exercises, with overtones to IoT, IIoT, ICS, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Areas discussed during the ARW included the cybersecurity of critical infrastructures; its educational and research aspects; vulnerability analysis; ICS/PLC/SCADA test beds and research; intrusion detection, mitigation and prevention; cryptography; digital forensics for ICS/PLCs; Industry 4.0 robustness and trustworthiness; and Cyber Fortress concept infused with practical training. Investigating theoretical and practical problems involving the security of critical and essential infrastructure of each segment of contemporary societies, the book will be of interest to all those whose work involves cybersecurity.

Book excerpt: Focusing on countermeasures against orchestrated cyber-attacks, Cyber Security Culture is research-based and reinforced with insights from experts who do not normally release information into the public arena. It will enable managers of organizations across different industrial sectors and government agencies to better understand how organizational learning and training can be utilized to develop a culture that ultimately protects an organization from attacks. Peter Trim and David Upton believe that the speed and complexity of cyber-attacks demand a different approach to security management, including scenario-based planning and training, to supplement security policies and technical protection systems. The authors provide in-depth understanding of how organizational learning can produce cultural change addressing the behaviour of individuals, as well as machines. They provide information to help managers form policy to prevent cyber intrusions, to put robust security systems and procedures in place and to arrange appropriate training interventions such as table top exercises. Guidance embracing current and future threats and addressing issues such as social engineering is included. Although the work is embedded in a theoretical framework, non-technical staff will find the book of practical use because it renders highly technical subjects accessible and links firmly with areas beyond ICT, such as human resource management - in relation to bridging the education/training divide and allowing organizational learning to be embraced. This book will interest Government officials, policy advisors, law enforcement officers and senior managers within companies, as well as academics and students in a range of disciplines including management and computer science.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the vulnerabilities of state and local services to cyber-threats and suggests possible protective action that might be taken against such threats. Cyber-threats to U.S. critical infrastructure are of growing concern to policymakers, managers and consumers. Information and communications technology (ICT) is ubiquitous and many ICT devices and other components are interdependent; therefore, disruption of one component may have a negative, cascading effect on others. Cyber-attacks might include denial of service, theft or manipulation of data. Damage to critical infrastructure through a cyber-based attack could have a significant impact on the national security, the economy, and the livelihood and safety of many individual citizens. Traditionally cyber security has generally been viewed as being focused on higher level threats such as those against the internet or the Federal government. Little attention has been paid to cyber-security at the state and local level. However, these governmental units play a critical role in providing services to local residents and consequently are highly vulnerable to cyber-threats. The failure of these services, such as waste water collection and water supply, transportation, public safety, utility services, and communication services, would pose a great threat to the public. Featuring contributions from leading experts in the field, this volume is intended for state and local government officials and managers, state and Federal officials, academics, and public policy specialists.
