Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, many dogs are deemed dangerous, not on the traits of the individual animal, but by breed alone. The authors explain why breed discrimination is unfair, and ineffective, and discuss approaches to handle reckless owners and their dogs. While there is nothing wrong with laws restricting vicious dogs, to have a dog seized or destroyed solely on the basis of its breed flies in the face of common decency.

Book excerpt: The hugely illuminating story of how a popular breed of dog became the most demonized and supposedly the most dangerous of dogs—and what role humans have played in the transformation. When Bronwen Dickey brought her new dog home, she saw no traces of the infamous viciousness in her affectionate, timid pit bull. Which made her wonder: How had the breed—beloved by Teddy Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and Hollywood’s “Little Rascals”—come to be known as a brutal fighter? Her search for answers takes her from nineteenth-century New York City dogfighting pits—the cruelty of which drew the attention of the recently formed ASPCA—to early twentieth‑century movie sets, where pit bulls cavorted with Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton; from the battlefields of Gettysburg and the Marne, where pit bulls earned presidential recognition, to desolate urban neighborhoods where the dogs were loved, prized—and sometimes brutalized. Whether through love or fear, hatred or devotion, humans are bound to the history of the pit bull. With unfailing thoughtfulness, compassion, and a firm grasp of scientific fact, Dickey offers us a clear-eyed portrait of this extraordinary breed, and an insightful view of Americans’ relationship with their dogs.

This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report had endorsed draft laws to extend dangerous dogs offences to attacks on private property and on assistance dogs. But the MPs criticise the Government for failing to bring in wider measures, including Dog Control Notices, to tackle out-of-control dogs. MPs also endorse the proposed amendment to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 making attacks on private land the same as attacks on public land. The current law makes it impossible to bring criminal charges against an owner whose dog attacks someone in a private place, such as a home. The Committee welcomed the proposal to enable action to be taken regardless of where a dog attack happens. The Committee agree with the Government that the protection from prosecution should apply only when an attack takes place on a trespasser in the house, not in a surrounding area such as the garden or drive. However, measures taken by the owner to minimise the likelihood of their dog acting aggressively toward someone unexpectedly in such places should be taken into account by enforcement agencies and the courts. MPs fully support the measures to extend offences to those committed against an assistance dog, such as a guide dog, in the same way as if the attack were on a person. This reflects the significant consequences such attacks have on the daily lives of people who rely on assistance dogs. The Committee recommends that such offences should be extended to apply to any attack which injures a protected animal, such as a horse or livestock.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Law: Welfare Interests & Rights, Third Edition, by David Favre, exposes the student to the wide scope of legal and ethical issues surrounding animal law in our society. It contains a mix of cases and essay materials for a number of animal issues in the context of state police power, constitutional law, and traditional common law. A primary focus is the property status of animals in the civil and criminal law, the expanding visibility of dogs in our legal system, and the most recent attempts to seek legal rights for animals. New to the Third Edition: The introduction provides more focused materials on the fundamental concepts, such as pain and suffering, that are needed for the entire course. The chapter on damages is rewritten with new organization and updated cases. The chapter on legal rights for animals is significantly enhanced with the most recent cases. In all chapters, references are updated. Professors and students will benefit from: Clear consideration of the history of anti-cruelty criminal laws and the difficulties of using the criminal law to help animals. The key phrase of “unnecessary pain and suffering” is considered in detail. A clear articulation of the enhanced status of companion animals, within the ever-changing state laws of our country. A review of the significant limitations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. An explanation of the power of the state to pass laws regulating companions, laws dealing with breed specific bans, and dangerous dog laws. An in-depth consideration of the status of companion animals both as property and as beings with legal rights in some circumstances. Significant editing of all cases.

Poodle-owner Favre (Detroit School of Law, Michigan State U.) and animal behaviorist Borchelt canvass animal legal issues primarily for lawyers but also for other interested parties. Focusing mainly on cases from 1960 to the present, they discuss: classifying animals as wild or domestic, animal ownership rights, the development of anti-cruelty laws, harm caused by animals (and why canids bite), state and local regulation, veterinarian malpractice, and issues in the investigation and evaluation of serious dog attacks. Includes a table of cases cited. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the inception of the Dangerous Dog Act 1991 and Breed Specific Legislation, a number of dog breeds have been been demonised by the media, influencing public perception and creating a public safety concern that research proves to be severely flawed. Needlessly, harmless family pets have been put to death and owners prosecuted by police and authorities using guidelines that are vague at best. The "Bull Breeds" have been much maligned, but after 25 years, studies now prove that Pit Bulls and dogs of "type" on the restricted list are no more dangerous than the family Labrador or Poodle and Breed Specific Legislation should be evoked. This book covers the many dog breeds persecuted, their history, physiology, true characteristics and development over hundreds of years from the first original Bandog, the Alaunt. How pioneers developed each specific breed for purpose and the international infuence they made to farming, guarding and companionship. I take an indepth look at the Dangerous Dog Act 1991 and Breed Specific Legislation. It looks at the legal challenge to BSL, exemption, education, dog aggression and the way forward to change government legislation and human perception. More importantly this book highlights the immediate need to prevent any more animal cruelty and endorse good animal welfare practices to prevent anymore suffering to humans and their dogs.
