Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Programming, 4 focuses on linear, quadratic, and nonlinear programming, unconstrained minimization, nonsmooth and discrete optimization, ellipsoidal methods, linear complementarity problems, and software evaluation. The selection first elaborates on an upper triangular matrix method for quadratic programming, solving quadratic programs by an exact penalty function, and QP-based methods for large-scale nonlinearly constrained optimization. Discussions focus on large-scale linearly constrained optimization, search direction for superbasic variables, finite convergence, basic properties, comparison of three active set methods, and QP-based methods for dense problems. The book then examines an iterative linear programming algorithm based on an augmented Lagrangian and iterative algorithms for singular minimization problems. The publication ponders on the derivation of symmetric positive definite secant updates, preconditioned conjugate gradient methods, and finding the global minimum of a function of one variable using the method of constant signed higher order derivatives. Topics include effects of calculation errors, application to polynomial minimization, using moderate additional storage, updating Cholesky factors, and utilizing sparse second order information. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in nonlinear programming.

Download or read book Process Optimisation written by J. K. Walters and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process Optimisation documents the proceedings of a three-day Symposium organized by the Midlands Branch of The Institution of Chemical Engineers, held at the University of Nottingham, on 7-9 April 1987. The initiative for this Symposium on Process Optimization came from Dr. K.C. Mecklenburgh, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nottingham, who was Chairman of the Organizing Committee from its inception until his death in November 1986. Mecklenburgh was a scholarly man, an acknowledged authority on Plant Layout and Safety, and a man very active in all aspects of the Institution's affairs. This volume contains 27 papers organized into three sections and follows the development of Process Plant from conception to operation. The papers in Section 1 discuss Project Selection, with an emphasis on financial implications, resource availability, and energy matters. Section 2 is devoted to Process Design where detailed optimization possibilities are considered including safety and hazard assessment. Section 3 covers Plant Operation where condition monitoring, revamp, and computing and control systems are all considered for optimization.

Book excerpt: The Fourth International MCDM Conference follows a tradition that began with an exploratory gathering at the University of South Carolina in 1973. The First International Conference was held in Jouy-en-Josas in 1975. The second and third were held in Buffalo (1977) and KOnigswinter (1979). We are grateful to the Office of Naval Research for years of advice and funding, and to Springer-Verlag for providing a widely dispersed series of proceedings volumes. In the case of the Delaware Conference we gratefully acknowledge new support from the corporate sector, coordinated by the University of Delaware's Development Office. Now that I have attended to the formal recognitions, I wish to place my recollection of the human side of the conference into the record. This is justi fiable because multiple criteria problem solving has been nurtured by a close-knit group of people whose interactions are not fully captured by the standard journal format. This was the conference in which an animated discussion between Dave,Bell and Paul Schoemaker caused Mathilde Stephenson to stand up and say, "Don't stop it; this is the best part of the conference. " Another sort of moment occurred when Lucas Pun was asked to explain a certain Chinese character in one of his transpar encies. He replied, "No alcohol allowed. " From Erick Duesing, speaking with an historical perspective, we had the insight that multiple criteria methods lan guished because "McCarthyism had made planning suspect.

Download or read book Learning Automata written by K. Najim and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning systems have made a significant impact on all areas of engineering problems. They are attractive methods for solving many problems which are too complex, highly non-linear, uncertain, incomplete or non-stationary, and have subtle and interactive exchanges with the environment where they operate. The main aim of the book is to give a systematic treatment of learning automata and to produce a guide to a wide variety of ideas and methods that can be used in learning systems, including enough theoretical material to enable the user of the relevant techniques and concepts to understand why and how they can be used. The book also contains the materials that are necessary for the understanding and development of learning automata for different purposes such as processes identification, optimization and control. Learning Automata: Theory and Applications may be recommended as a reference for courses on learning automata, modelling, control and optimization. The presentation is intended both for graduate students in control theory and statistics and for practising control engineers.

Book Synopsis Numerical Analysis and Optimization by : Mehiddin Al-Baali
Download or read book Numerical Analysis and Optimization written by Mehiddin Al-Baali and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers selected, peer-reviewed contributions presented at the Fifth International Conference on Numerical Analysis and Optimization (NAO-V), which was held at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman, on January 6-9, 2020. Each chapter reports on developments in key fields, such as numerical analysis, numerical optimization, numerical linear algebra, numerical differential equations, optimal control, approximation theory, applied mathematics, derivative-free optimization methods, programming models, and challenging applications that frequently arise in statistics, econometrics, finance, physics, medicine, biology, engineering and industry. Many real-world, complex problems can be formulated as optimization tasks, and can be characterized further as large scale, unconstrained, constrained, non-convex, nondifferentiable or discontinuous, and therefore require adequate computational methods, algorithms and software tools. These same tools are often employed by researchers working in current IT hot topics, such as big data, optimization and other complex numerical algorithms in the cloud, devising special techniques for supercomputing systems. This interdisciplinary view permeates the work included in this volume. The NAO conference series is held every three years at Sultan Qaboos University, with the aim of bringing together a group of international experts and presenting novel and advanced applications to facilitate interdisciplinary studies among pure scientific and applied knowledge. It is a venue where prominent scientists gather to share innovative ideas and know-how relating to new scientific methodologies, to promote scientific exchange, to discuss possible future cooperations, and to promote the mobility of local and young researchers.

Book Synopsis QP based methods for large scale nonlinearly constrained optimization by : Philip E. Gill
Download or read book QP based methods for large scale nonlinearly constrained optimization written by Philip E. Gill and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several methods for nonlinearly constrained optimization have been suggested in recent years that are based on solving a quadratic programming (QP) subproblem to determine the direction of search. Even for dense problems, there is no consensus at present concerning the 'best' formulation of the QP subproblem. When solving large problems, many of the options possible for small problems become unreasonably expensive in terms of storage and/or arithmetic operations. This paper discusses the inherent difficulties of developing QP-based methods for large-scale nonlinearly constrained optimization, and suggests some possible approaches. (Author).
