Book excerpt: "With the advent of manned space flight, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has conducted intensive investigations on the physiological makeup of the human body. The last decade has seen major advances in the use of radiotelemetry in physiological research. Revolutionary developments in microelectronics are making possible smaller telemetry systems that can be wholly implanted in laboratory animals. The NASA Ames Research Center has been in the fore-front of such research and has developed many implantable biotelemetry devices now considered by many as a standard method for monitoring physiological functions in animals. This report describes biotelemetry developments at Ames, tracing the evolution of concepts underlying the accurate and reliable biotelemetry systems of today. Such systems are described in sufficient detail for the reader to select designs to meet specific needs. Through its Technology Utilization Program, NASA strives to make the results of such work widely available for the use of those outside the aerospace community. This publication is one of a series intended to achieve those objectives."--Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jlmbulatory monitoring of signals, related to cardiovascular system per formances, is one of the biomedical technologies of wider interest. This interest is well documented by the literature, by the number of instruments available on the market and by the increasing diffusioo of this technique at routine clinical level. The wide distribution of ambulatory monitoring is however not yet well supported by commonly accepted criteria of clinical interpretation, by an assessment of the minimal requirements for instrumentation performances, or by indications of costjbenefit figures in relation to different situations. Several European centres have a recognized expertise and are well suited to the examinatioo of the problem of defining comnon guidelines and of making recommendations so as to stimulate an improvement of the clinical usage and of the performance of the instrumentation. The Biomedical Engineering Standing Group of the Committee for Medical and Public Health Research approved the organization of this \\Orksrop which had as its aims the assessment of the state-of-the-art of different aspects of ant>ulatory monitoring and the discussion within a group of experts of the feasibility and interest in promoting the coordination in Europe of these activities in the frame\\Ork of a "concerted action". The \\Orkshop was held in Pisa over two full days (April 11-12, 1983). The participants were physicians and engineers, experts in their fields.

Book excerpt: This book presents new systems and circuits for implantable biomedical applications, using a non-conventional way to transmit energy and data via ultrasound. The authors discuses the main constrains (e.g. implant size, battery recharge time, data rate, accuracy of the acoustic models) from the definition of the ultrasound system specification to the in-vitro validation. The system described meets the safety requirements for ultrasound exposure limits in diagnostic ultrasound applications, according to FDA regulations. Readers will see how the novel design of power management architecture will meet the constraints set by FDA regulations for maximum energy exposure in the human body. Coverage also includes the choice of the acoustic transducer, driven by optimum positioning and size of the implanted medical device. Throughout the book, links between physics, electronics and medical aspects are covered to give a complete view of the ultrasound system described. Provides a complete, system-level perspective on the use of ultrasound as energy source for medical implants; Discusses system design concerns regarding wireless power transmission and wireless data communication, particularly for a system in which both are performed on the same channel/frequency; Describes an experimental study on implantable battery powered biomedical systems; Presents a fully-integrated, implantable system and hermetically sealed packaging.

Book excerpt: Research and innovation in areas such as circuits, microsystems, packaging, biocompatibility, miniaturization, power supplies, remote control, reliability, and lifespan are leading to a rapid increase in the range of devices and corresponding applications in the field of wearable and implantable biomedical microsystems, which are used for monitoring, diagnosing, and controlling the health conditions of the human body. This book provides comprehensive coverage of the fundamental design principles and validation for implantable microsystems, as well as several major application areas. Each component in an implantable device is described in details, and major case studies demonstrate how these systems can be optimized for specific design objectives. The case studies include applications of implantable neural signal processors, brain-machine interface (BMI) systems intended for both data recording and treatment, neural prosthesis, bladder pressure monitoring for treating urinary incontinence, implantable imaging devices for early detection and diagnosis of diseases as well as electrical conduction block of peripheral nerve for chronic pain management. Implantable Biomedical Microsystems is the first comprehensive coverage of bioimplantable system design providing an invaluable information source for researchers in Biomedical, Electrical, Computer, Systems, and Mechanical Engineering as well as engineers involved in design and development of wearable and implantable bioelectronic devices and, more generally, teams working on low-power microsystems and their corresponding wireless energy and data links. First time comprehensive coverage of system-level and component-level design and engineering aspects for implantable microsystems. Provides insight into a wide range of proven applications and application specific design trade-offs of bioimplantable systems, including several major case studies Enables Engineers involved in development of implantable electronic systems to optimize applications for specific design objectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Handbook on Biotelemetry and Radio Tracking presents the proceedings of an International Conference on Telemetry and Radio Tracking in Biology and Medicine, held in The University of Oxford, Oxford, U.K. on March 20–22, 1979. This book illustrates the advances connected with every aspect of biotelemetry and radio tracking. Organized into five parts encompassing 101 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the method that allows assessment or control of biological parameters from animals, subjects, and patients with comparatively little disturbance and restraint. This text then examines radio telemetry as a system for telemetry or communications over great distances. Other chapters consider better transmitter design and construction of radio tracking. This book discusses as well telemetric measurements of hemodynamic response to driving in coronary patients. The final chapter deals with the study of the coastal movements of Atlantic salmon tagged with ultrasonic transmitters. This book is a valuable resource for biological researchers and ecologists.
